My hall says that there will be NO shots allowed at the wedding due to legal issues. I am so upset. Do you think this will put a damper on the wedding?
I went to a wedding at the Bellport Country Club where there were no shots allowed... all he did was put the shot in a big glass.... not a shot glass and served it that way.... They can't deny you... it's almost like a small drink.... just without the mixin's. Dont' worry - you'll be fine!
This is what my hall does instead of serving shots.

I know that my hall said the same thing but they will serve you a shot in a regular glass with ice & not give you a shot glass per se. I went to a wedding the toher day & they served shots so I wonder why some do & some don't.

I never heard of this before, probably because a wedding is an elegant affair and I would never think to do shots at one.
IMO, this is not a big deal at all.

I think I was under the impression that when they say no shots, that means no hard liqour served in a small amount at once. I'm coming to find that a lot of these halls that say NO shots mean NO shots in shot glasses. I don't think it's a big deal if it's in a bigger glass.
I agree that you should have no problem getting a drink in a regular glass. What about the people, like my FH and some other guests who's drink of choice is a double shot of Jack or something like that. I just think that when they say shots, it means they don't make car bombs and kamakazi shots and things like that.

I have done shots at just about every wedding I've ever been to, and it don't think it makes the wedding any less 'elegant.' When you're with a group of friends, a congratulatory/celebration shot is pretty normal. I have been to a few halls with the no-shot rule and they just put it in a rocks glass.

I take offense to that 'elegance' comment. I don't think that elegance has anything to do with doing a shot of liqour. It's how you carry yourself and what type of affair you are having. I have planned this entire wedding with elegance at the top of my priority list. I don't expect car bombs, and tequilla shots with the groomsmen licking salt off their dates' chest.
I just think with all this money I'm spending if me and my FH want to take a couple of shots with our family and friends in celebration of the day, we shouldn't be denied that.

I agree with you. I will for sure be doing shots at my wedding and if anyone has a problem with that, then too bad.

Re: Can you believe this?
It is a big Scotto Bro thing with the no shot policy. We go to CB in westbury every year for the fire dept installation dinner. And they always have this policy. However we get around it by getting glasses of alcohol straight up and doing shots that way. Essentially they do not do shot glasses. Just because there is a lacking of glasses does not mean there truely isnt shots. Where there is a will there is always a way

I don't think you have to worry .... And I can see why you want it. I don't want people going crazy, but I know I want to do a celebratory shot with my college crew and that FH will want to do one with his boys. THey may so no to other people, but not to bride and groom, especially if you don't mind getting them in the larger glass.

You are right, it's your money, and open bar should really mean open bar. Call the banquet manager and tell him you'd like some clarification on the whole shot thing-you don't want your guests told NO-you want them accomodated. It's a different story if someone gets way too hammered, and the bartender wants to cut them off.

IMHO, it will only put a damper on the wedding if the guests are there to DRINK, and not to celebrate your wedding day.
Most halls now have a no shot policy due to liability issues with people getting drunk and falling down and getting hurt.

Sorry, it came out wrong. I should have prefaced it by saying that it is my choice to not want to do shots at a wedding. I didn’t mean to insult anyone.

I don't want people doing shots at my wedding either - but it is a matter of WHO is asking for the shot - but also they did say for LEGAL reasons - I wonder what those reasons are?
I don't think it is a matter of being elegant that I don't want the shots - there are a lot of young immature people at my wedding and I don't want them drunk and ridiculous.

I'm not talking about frat party type of shots going on. I'm talking about the groomsmen wanting to make a toast in celebration. My guests wouldn't expect it to be a college keg stand type of party. I just don't like when options are taken off the table.
I agree with you. If my grandmother wants to toast us with a little sambuca, then she should be allowed. I don't like restrictions like that when you're paying so much money.

Re: Can you believe this?
We had plenty of people doing shots at our wedding and it's a Scotto place so I'm surprised to hear that they don't allow them. I know they gave them to folks in small glasses - not a traditional shot glass - but it worked out fine. The only thing they told us about the bar policies was that regardless - shots, drinks, wine - anyone who had too much and was getting rowdy would be cut off and someone (FOB, coordinator etc.) would be notified since the guest would probably be upset. In the end everything worked out fine & was ALOT of fun - plenty of shots, tons of toasts to the B&G & no one got out of hand.
ETA - My coworker just told me when they ordered shots they asked for 'shots' like Kamkaze & Sambuca & never had to ask for anything like a vodka that they split among themselves.

Wanna talk about 'elegance'?.... hahaha... I went to a 'dry wedding' (No alcohol at all... not even if you bought it yourself) so we stopped at a liquor store before the reception and bought those little mini bottles of liquor and made our own drinks right there at the table! It was hysterical!
Even the toast was apple cider!!! Come on now....

Re: Can you believe this?
They had this same policy at our Hall. The only way that they would allow shots was if DH and I put money into escrot for anyone who needed a Taxi home. They didn't want to be responsible for anyone driving drunk or getting into accidents!
They are serving liquor & beer though! I don't get it. Someone can get drunk on that with no shots! Whatever!
We got a Strawberry Vodka filled Ice Sculpture for the cocktail hour! That was shots!!!!!!! DUH!!!!!!
The owner said that if the Bridal party wants to do shots, he would allow that in the bridal suite. Which we never did!
If you want shots that bad, just get whatever liquor you want on the rocks! SAME THING!
Don't worry about it! It will not put a damper on anything!
I went to a wedding once where the bride did a TON of shots! And she wound up throwing up right in the middle of the wedding at the head table!

I think it is normal for some guests to want to do celebratory shots at a wedding. My cousins did one and ordered a round for a table of our OOT friends - they were all best buddies by the end of the night! No one got crazy drunk and the wedding did not have a frat party atmosphere.
My DH and I were at a cousin's wedding recently where shots weren't allowed and the bar was very strict about even putting them in bigger glasses. Let's just say this didn't go over well with the crowd. I would definitely encourage brides to check into their halls' policy.
