Cash Bar?

Original post by roxyspark

Have you ever gone to a wedding with a cash bar?
Where was it?

I live in California and I was just discussing wedding plans with my co-workers.

Apparently having an open bar is not expected.

I heard a couple of different options:

Cash bar the whole wedding
Each person gets two drinks tickets then it is cash bar
Open bar for only 2 hours then a cash bar

Anyway, I just wanted to hear any other options you may have experienced.

ETA: I am having a full open bar at my wedding. I am just curious to see if people actually did go to a wedding with a cash bar.

I was thinking the same thing!

me too. enough already. I think everyone has said their peace (or words of war!)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Let's be grateful for ANY hospitality we can show to loved ones.

Re: Cash Bar?

A friend told me she recently went to a wedding in Boston and it was a cash bar. Her & her fiance were shocked, and unprepared for it, they only had like $60 between them, which they brought along to pay for a cab back to their hotel.

They def did not enjoy having to pay for a gift, a hotel, a cab & then not getting any drinks!!!

Maybe cause I'm use to NY weddings, but I think a cash bar is in bad taste. JMO

Okay so I also didn’t realize that their was major controversy going on here, I read the first post and responded, then I realized their were 6 pages of arguments, Oh well sorry to add to the Draaama!

But let me just add that too many people on this website get offended way to easily, listen people we are not all going to always agree, how boring would that be. Everyone has to feel like they can post their opinions with out getting so much s**t for it. And let me add the very popular and very necessary disclosure “JMO”

Re: Cash Bar?

Cash bar is pretty common in Massachusetts where I live. I think it's pretty crazy. People spend tons of money on these weddings and then make their guests pay for drinks. I went to my first cash bar wedding in November...It was open bar for cocktail hour and then cash bar after that.

My personal opinion of cash bar is that you would never ask guests in your home to pay for drinks, why would it be acceptable to ask your wedding guests to pay for drinks?

Emily/Peggy Post are also pretty firm on the cash bar issue...Your guests shouldn't have to pay for anything. Period.

ETA: Woops...didn't realize this was such an old/controversial thread.

Re: Cash Bar?

I have. I went to a wedding where it was a cash bar and it was REALLY expensive! (It really stank after we took off of work, and had to pay for airfare, hotels and rental cars on top of it) Nothing was included except for little warm bottles of soda. It really put a damper on the night.

I have to say at my wedding I had an Open Bar the whole time. The bartenders were amazing and so many people came up to me and thanked me! I think it really contributed to an awesome party!

I don't think I would ever do a cash bar. Thats just my opinion. Never been to a wedding with one either.

To my family and FH's family the wedding is about the food, drinks, and dancing (besides the ceremony). I would not ask them to bring money if they wanted to eat the jumbo shrimp at the CH, and I won't ask them to pay for their drinks. We are cutting back on other things, like CP's and favors, because we know what our guests like, and we want to make them happy. That's my opinion, and I'm entitled to it.

I once went to a wedding in PA where it was a cash bar (I was a kid though)...

I had a friend go to a cash bar IN NY & her DH took $ out of the gift card to pay for the bar....

i think that is riduculous....everyone has their reasons for not wanting alcohol or wanting it at their wedding.. people should just be honored that they were invited in the first place .. a wedding is a day to share your heartfelt joy and warm wishes with the bride and groom, not to just get a free meal... people loose sight of this sometimes and are more concerned with the smallest of details then the big picture...the WEDDING day...

I think having a cash bar is very very tacky. It screams CHEAP.
