cash bar includes soda?

Original post by peaches42587

my friend is getting married a few weeks before me and shes on a strict budget. (arent we all!!lol) she tells me that it is going to be a cash bar. later in the conversation it comes out that her idea of a cash bar includes soda. her wedding is only going to include water and coffee. if anyone wants a soda or wine we will have to pay. even for the toasts she said well have to pay for our own wine! i have such a huge problem with this its been bothering me all week. i so just want to pay for it myself! i dont think im going to be the only one who finds this frustrating at her wedding.

is anyone doing this and how did it turn out?

she lives in ny but not long island. its crazy. weddings where she lives are so inexpensive as it is. i cant believe she cant afford even soda. she should honestly postpone her wedding if she cant afford it. i will def sugest the bottles of soda though. thats a good idea.

I have seen it done, have been privy to it and was offended. I only had $10 on me and was very upset that I was not made aware of the situation prior. I actually say guests pulling money out of the gift envelopes that was supossed to be for the bride and groom because everyone was offended. My grandmother always said you wouldn't have a party at your house and expect your guests to pay so why should you at a wedding. Especially for soda. That is TACKY!

My guess is people are going to start taking money out of those envelopes or writing different checks! Not having alcohol, fine. People should get over that. Its not the end of the world. But not having soda is something unreal to me. You have to serve people soft drinks atleast!

I have been to a wedding with a Cash Bar in Florida, and a lot of the guests did not know it was before hand, so they did not have anything more than a few singles on them to tip the valet and bartender. They wound up just drinking water, and grumbling about it.

If she can afford bottles of Soda, that may help, but some places may charge a fee for bringing in your own. Can she talk to the vendor and see if they will let soda or iced tea be included in the price of the meal?

I can see it for a restaurant or such like for engagement parties, but for weddings, if the guests are not told ahead of time, there will be ticked off people from my experience

I went to a wedding where this happened and the couple had bottles of soda at each table so i assume that if they hadn't done that we would've had to pay for even soda.

Same here...I knew about it before hand though so we were prepared with some extra money. FH just warned me not to drink too much LOL. I think I had a few glasses of wine and he had one, and then we had to call it a night because we didn't have enough on us to keep going.

bring a bag of penny's and count them out on the bar.... the bartender will be so annoyed he'll serve you for free all night!

That's a wonderful idea!!!! hahahahaaaaaa... love it!!!!!

All I can is WOW! Thats insane. Like you said we are all budgeting. But to not even serve soda??? I have heard of cash bars for liqour (which i am not a fan of) but hey to each their own.
I dunno about that, i do know when i go to wedding i take a small bag with some tip money for the bartender, not enough to go and buy me drinks for the night. I think she is going to have a lot of confused guests.

This is the first time I've ever heard the cash bar taken this far! I would be pissed if I went to that wedding, bought a dress, bought a nice gift, and had to purchase my own pepsi, let alone wine/beer/liquor.

I think the guests are going to be a little take back when they realize they have to pay for soda. I can understand not having a full open bar- but soda? I remember throwing a party for my parents and all the soda and wine we wanted was included in the price of the meal.

I think she needs to do something- Maybe give her the Idea to buy bottles of soda and make decorative labels herself - maybe to go with her theme or colors or even pictures of her and her FH through out the relationship so it is something!

I have never heard of that before =/

A friend of mine did a cash bar at her wedding upstate.

When she told me that idea I thought she was nuts.

As it turns out 'cash bar' was just for liquor.
Wine, Champagne, Beer, and Soda were all included.

She saved a ton of money by doing a cash bar for liquor and no one was unhappy with the situation because there was enough there for everyone to find someone for them.

But to not even have soda is crazy! Besides the wedding gift I don't even think I've be carrying that much money on me. I'm one of those people that everyone is shocked if I have $5 in my wallet because I use my debit card for EVERYTHING. I prob wouldn't even be able to afford anything but water unless they took my card! lol

Personally, I think if you can't afford to serve it at your wedding (and pay for it yourself) then you need to rework your budget, vendors, etc. I've never been a wedding where guests had to pay for their own drinks - especially not soda! I doubt people will realize this when they go to the bar. It's nuts.

cannot agree more

Ditto on that

She brings up a very good point. If the guests show up with no money on them except for what's in the envelope, what happens then? You should tell your friend if she is dead set on doing the cash bar, she really needs to let her guests know in advance so they are prepared.

i've been to weddings like this, but not in NY. It was FH's buddy from college... we went to his wedding where there was open bar only for the CH, after that, it was all cash for everything. It stunk but some people view our weddings in NY as 'outlandish'... when FH told his friend that ours had an open bar he was like 'what, are you crazy?' so i dunno i guess its just different in certain places

Wow.. I usually never carry alot of money with me to weddings except for the gift. I can totally understand mixed drinks, but to serve only water and no soda? Thats a bit odd. She should cut down on something else. Good thing she told you before hand though.
