my friend is getting married a few weeks before me and shes on a strict budget. (arent we all!!lol) she tells me that it is going to be a cash bar. later in the conversation it comes out that her idea of a cash bar includes soda. her wedding is only going to include water and coffee. if anyone wants a soda or wine we will have to pay. even for the toasts she said well have to pay for our own wine! i have such a huge problem with this its been bothering me all week. i so just want to pay for it myself! i dont think im going to be the only one who finds this frustrating at her wedding.
is anyone doing this and how did it turn out?

Personally, I think if you can't afford to serve it at your wedding (and pay for it yourself) then you need to rework your budget, vendors, etc. I've never been a wedding where guests had to pay for their own drinks - especially not soda! I doubt people will realize this when they go to the bar. It's nuts.

I don't doubt that there will be a single person who isn't totally aghast at this situation. Only serving water?? That is ridiculous. At least you were warned about this, think of all the guests who are going to be in for quite a surprise.

couldn't have said it better myself. I would go NUTS if I went to a wedding and found out I have to pay for my own drinks. I would say she's going to have a lot of upset guests.

i know right! and when i said something to her she said that no one would care. i feel bad, she's going to be so embaressed. i might as well bring my own soda. she said they were going to charge $2 per person for soda and she cant afford it. i dont understand.

I went to a wedding where this happened and the couple had bottles of soda at each table so i assume that if they hadn't done that we would've had to pay for even soda.

Hmm, I've never been to a wedding where I had to buy my own drinks (and soda, now that's off the wall!).
But at least there will be drinks there! My coworker in PA just had her son's wedding, which was completely dry because bride's parents are against alcohol. Imagine cocktail hour with no drinks at all

WOW, I can understand not being able to afford certain things, but to expect people to pay for soda is crazy. It's crazier that the guests will probably not know that until they get to the wedding, unless she actually told everyone in advance.

nope she didnt tell anyone. i dont even think she knew that a cash bar DIDNT mean soda. cause she told me and i was like o okay well at least well have soda and she was like uhh no? soda is part of the cash bar.

Is the wedding in NY? I have been to wedding with a cash bar but they were not around here. Every RH I visited on LI included the alcohol and to not have it you would have specifically excluded it.

OH BOY! she's going to have a little bit of a problem on this one. Some people might actually end up leaving if they have to pay for drinks and other people might take away their gifts or fill out the check in the hall and not give them that much money. Maybe you can suggest to her going to Costco or something and at least putting bottles of soda on the tables to make it so that people have a little bit of a choice. Most people don't even bring money to a wedding. Good luck with it all.

WOW- I've never heard of that for a LI wedding. That's going to be shocking to the guests.....I hope they bring enough money to pay for their drinks!!

I would try to suggest the bottles on the tables thing to her as well. I don't mean to be rude but not including at least soda is very strange. I understand being on a budget and all but you are hosting an event, you have to at least include people's non-alcoholic drinks! Maybe she doesn't know or hasn't thought of how people will react. You know what, I saw wedding pics of online and the bride and groom had an 'old fashioned party' type feel to their wedding. They decided to buy nostalgic soda in bottles and put them in large tin soda coolers with ice. It was really really cute and it didn't look cheesy at all. I will try to find a picture so i can post it here for you to see......

bring a bag of penny's and count them out on the bar.... the bartender will be so annoyed he'll serve you for free all night!

suggest the bottles on the table - but if she cant afford $2pp will she buy the soda???
i went to a wedding here on LI a few weeks ago that was a brunch and only had mimosas and bloody marys and ppl were annoyed!! i cant imagine if they had to pay for soda......
