CASH not gifts!

Original post by gicrespo

we still havent opened all our bridal shower gifts and now people have started sending us wedding gifts. i thought the proper etiquette was for people to bring a check in an envelope? i deleted by bridal shower registry from bb&b, but now i get texts asking where my registry went!

how do i tell people, send gifts we need money! in a nice proper way lol

wow, nothing like yet another post with brides attacking brides.

This is very sad and true. It gets way out of line sometimes but to the original poster ...don't get offended, this happens more than you know.

Besides that, like i said just set up a Honeymoon Registry and close all others. That is the only way to do it. And in your invites, you can enclose the website to your honeymoon registry.

True but I think people will still give gifts anyway- there's not much way around it. Do I prefer cash? Yes, but if I got gifts I would not be disappointed- some people are just more of 'gift' people- i'm a money person just b/c I hate schlepping and wrapping gifts.

It's not that I don't want gifts, I just want a McMansion to put them all in, lol :)

Re: CASH not gifts!

Proper etiquette in going to a wedding is giving a gift. In NY, giving cash is common, but never expected.

I live in a TINY Manhattan apartment, so I understand where you're coming from- but if you're trying to go by etiquette, you CAN'T ask for/expect cash.

Only keeping a BBB registry is a good way around the 'rule' b/c of their exchange policy, as is a honeyfund registry (because when people buy you excursions, etc it's really just cash going into a pay pal account- then you can choose if you want use it for excursions or not).

But I have to agree with the girls who said that any mention of gifts (cash, envelope, or otherwise) is in REALLY bad form, and tacky... You just don't ever ask for gifts. (even for birthday/graduation/other parties- if you think about it.)

And really unless someone asks, there's never a proper way of telling them what you want (that's why you don't even put traditional registries on your wedding invitation- you let people know through your bridal party/parents via WOM)

lol thanks for all ur help ladies! honestly, i dont mean to be tacky but we dont have room or any need for any more gifts. further, we're not telling people how much to spend but if they chose to spend 20 bucks, then please give 20 bucks in cash/check. there are also some ladies who have responded and are NO where near getting married yet- just wait til you get closer and then let me know how u feel about these things lol

Totally agree with you. My FH's mom said shes bringing a Vacuum to the wedding!!! MADNESS! I told FH that thats a no go... I was horrified.

We live in a tiny NYC studio, Any gifts would have to go into storage for gosh knows how long!
Being from Kansas, I know that cash is a NYC/LI thing, so I am just quietly explaining New York customs to fam and friends from out of town in a very matter of fact 'isnt that interesting' kind of way.. but expecting a fair share of toasters and blenders just the same
