Cat Peeps - Need some info/advice!!! ***UPDATED WITH CAT PICS****

So FH and I adopted two rescue cats this weekend from an INSANE cat lady (she had 50 cats in her 1 bedroom apt) who told us to feed 3 times a day, wet food only - my mom was like 'um, no' so I wanted to hear what you girls thought!

we def don't want to overfeed them!

So:
1) how often do you feed your cat(s) and what type of food (wet, dry, both)?
2) are they usually up all night and being annoying?

TIA!!!

we have two cats but they're both still kittens so i dunno if it's the same for older cats or not

1) we feed them 1 can of wet food mixed with dry food in the morning and they eat what they want from it and then eat the rest throughout the day. we also have a bowl of dry food for them to munch on when they want to.

2) yes, they're obnoxious when we are trying to fall asleep and then when they know it's about the time we should be getting up in the morning. during the night they sleep in bed with us but occassionally get up and play

eta... where are the cute kitty pics???

How old are they?

My cat usually gets wet food once int he morning (1 packet of the whiskas pouches or half of a large can of like 9Lives or w/e) and I let her graze on dry food as she wants it, so I keep her bowl full.

Wet food 3 times a day is not necessary. Or good for them. They need dry stuff to chew on to help keep their teeth clean,t he wet food isn't good for their teeth.

She used to be up late into the night rnning around like crazy when she was a kitten, til like a year old, now she still does it once in a while but it's rare. She's 3.

But I only have 1. With two, they probably egg each other on.

We feed ours dry food only. It keeps them from annoying us during the night. They would wake up at 4 am and want to eat. Really annoying. Solved the problem by leaving food out always. You may want to wean them on that so they dont over eat.

We have a bowl of dry food out for the cat to munch on as he pleases...we don't regularly feed him wet food, mostly we just give it as a treat sometimes.

3x a day is definitely overfeeding. We dont do wet food because it bothers my cats stomachs. If you read the portions on the bag of food it usually says I believe 1 cup of day for each cat. We leave a full bowl and my cats munch throughout the day. My vet said that was fine because my cats dont gorge themselves.

Go easy on the wet food. Makes kitties chubby.

We feed the 2 little beasts dry food, esp now that they are older, and since they throw up more lol. And rocco is getting FAT so dry food it is. We get the Iams Diet Cat Food lol.

We do a half a serving in the am and another at night. And we don't feed them table food.

Call the vet and see what they say though. Sometimes, a vet may reco a different feeding pattern based on the cats habits.

thanks ladies! one cat is 6 months, and the other one is between 1 -2 years old.

we fed them a can of wet food this AM, and then left out some water & dry food for them to munch on all day.

i will not give them any more wet food today - I think i might try to give them half a can of wet food per day (1/4 can for each cat).

For my cat...i usually only fed him dry food. I would leave a full bowl throughout the day and he would eat when he was hungry. Wet food was maybe 3 times a week (if that many)

OMG...he would always be awake really early in the morning (4AM) and be very annoying when i was trying to sleep, but i think he was just trying to play!!

wet food 3x a day is way too much, but if they're used to that, you may have to get them used to a new routine.

i would feed them 1/2 can in the morning, 1/4 can in the evening, and 1/4 at night to start ... then, after a few days, stop giving the last 'meal' ... then after a few days, stop giving the evening meal ... that way, they won't be shocked into starvation or whatnot.

ETA: but they should always have dry food to eat ...

try not to get them stuck on wet food.
dry food helps with the buildup on the cats teeth thats what the vet always said.

i have 2 cats and i feed them once a day wet and dry food mixed (about a quarter of a can each) and save the can for the next day.

I have actually been trying to ween them off of the wet food because i think its costly and unnecessary since i leave the dry food our for them 24/7
but they arent happy about it and cry after about 2 days of no wet food so i guess my plan isnt working.
but wet food 3 times a day is a lot.

and they are VERY obnoxious at night but I love them so i deal with it lol

We keep dry food out for whenever they are hungry and we give them half a can of wet each at night as a treat.

My mom has the dry food out for most of the day and she stopped feeding her wet food because she kept throwing up from it

my older cat (she is 6 had her for five years) only ever got dry food - left out allday for her - wet food was a special treat (say 1x a month).

We adopted a kitten in Sept who wouldn't eat any dry food - so we now give them 1 pouch of wet food in the morning and leave the dry food out.

The kitten doesn't really like the dry - but she is learning to eat it.

Wet food is making my older cat fat!!

They normally sleep through the night - certain times of month they go crazy around 4 am - but that is it.

This is what I also do. Also - apparently it is better for them if you feed them dry food because it keeps their teeth healthier.

1) feed - 1 can of wet food per day. leave out dry food for snacking.

2) depends on whether they want to go out. if that's the case, usually it's just in the early morning, not middle of night.

IF the cats are only used to wetfood then you need to train them... it will help them digest the dry food.
The best way to do this is to give them the SAME kind of food the cat lady was giving them... slowly add some dry food into the wet, add a little more every other day until its basically dry food coated in wet. once you get to this point they should eat the dry food with no issues, if they dont want the dry food put some water on it and let it get mushy, they'll eat it.

and cats shouldn't be 'fed' at certain points during the day.. they should have food available to them at all times, if you notice they are gaining TOO much weight, then you monitor what times they get fed.
