Catholic Brides...Help

Original post by Jennifer907

So, FH and I are both Catholic, but neither of us really practice. We both need to make our confirmation before getting married if we want to have a religious ceremony. But his parish told him we can't take a class until September. Obviously, that's not going to work since we're getting married in September. Anyone go through this process? Any words of advice?

maybe go to the diocese headquarters in rockville center..... they may be able to send you to the right parish to get things done faster.....

I agree

This is what I would do-you can do it in another parish its just a matter of finding one that will do it before

I would never say to lie, but the church I am getting married in only asked for proof of our baptism....not communion or confirmation...--so i'm confused.

same here. he did ask in the interview if we ever make our confirmations, and since we did we told him we did.

Your baptismal certificate is the record of all of the sacraments you received, there are notations on the back which show you made your confirmation and communion (although mine didn't have a notation for the communion but, I guess they figured I did since I made my confirmation).

Your marriage paperwork still goes through the diocese. They'll know if someone did not make their confirmation, even if they don't ask for the paperwork.

I was confirmed last yr in order to have a religious ceremony. It takes several months and activites. I dont think u will have time to have that done.

The program you need to look into is called the RCIA program. Some parishes want you to complete confirmation and others don't mind. I would look into another parish if that's the case.

I just finished the RCIA program last April with my old parish. When I spoke with my priest (a new parish), he mentioned that I didn't even have to go through the program, but in all honesty I'm glad I did because I was finally confrimed.
Most of the RCIA programs run from September to April.

Good luck!

Yes, I have made all of my sacraments but FH has all except confirmation. According to my priest you only have to have been baptised to be married in the church. Although if you would both like to make confirmation you may do it at a later date , before you have children and my priest encouraged FH to do this. We are attending precana. Hope this helps you..

At least one of you has to have made baptism, communion, and confirmation for the marriage to be a sacrament. Even then, it is ONLY a sacrament for the person who has been confirmed.

You can receive the Sacrament of Marriage (and it be valid) without having made your confirmation, BUT according to Canon Law you should really do everything in your power to be confirmed prior to the wedding.

Can. 1065 §1. Catholics who have not yet received the sacrament of confirmation are to receive it before they are admitted to marriage if it can be done without grave inconvenience.

§2. To receive the sacrament of marriage fruitfully, spouses are urged especially to approach the sacraments of penance and of the Most Holy Eucharist.
