catholic priests in other churches

There had been some questions about Catholic Priests giving their blessings at weddings in Protestant churches. When I went to my final meeting with a priest at my parish, he mentioned that he has given his blessing at wedding in other churches, namely Methodist. I also went to a wedding last year in a nondemoninational place where a priest and rabbi both performed the service. I had not asked him the question, but it came up when he was discussing customs. So, it is possible to have a Catholic Priest attend and bless a marriage outside of the Catholic Church.

Hi, I was wondering if you could get married by a Catholic Priest outside the Catholic Church? I heard some of the brides here talk about it, but really didn't understand. My FI and I are getting married where the reception will be held. We are both Catholic, and wanted to get married as Catholics, but when I found out how much you have to do in order to get married in the church, we decided not to. We are not practicing Catholics, but wanted to get married in the Church. But being, I never made my Communion or Confirmation, us not having a church we belong to, and living in NC not NY, is making it quite difficult. If you or anyone else has any other suggestions, that would be great! Thanks again!

From what I've heard most Catholic Priests (atleast in NY) will not marry you outside the church. It doesn't mean you can't have a religious wedding. I was raised Catholic but my fiance was not raised with any relgious background. We are getting married in a Lutheran Church. But our wedding will not be recognized in the Catholic Church. I also live in NC. Think I ran into one of your posts before. Where in NC? I'm in Raleigh.

It is not really very hard to get married in the Catholic Church. We met with the priest twice and had a 1 day precana (which you can do at another parish if you are far away). The cost is only 250 with an organist at our church. You would just have to find a parish. We are having a family member Priest instead of my parish priest and we are having a violinist for a couple songs. No problems!

It really depends on the parish. My fiance has to be confirmed before we get married, we have met with our priest about 6 times already with more to come plus we went to pre-cana. AND, it is $500 to get married, which includes 1 singer and organ, and additional fees for additional instruments, singers, etc.

Hi Carrie, How do you go about precana out of state? Don't you need to be a registered parishoner to get married in the church??? We don't have a church here or in NY? What church are you associated with? Thanks!

Hi Mary, Thanks for the info! How do you go about getting Confirmed befored getting married? It can't be the same as when your 13? Is it a few minute thing or a whole afternoon? The only reason I ask is that a while ago someone told me that you do it right before you get married, and it only takes a few minutes. I don't know? What church do you belong to?

My church is in Brooklyn and that is where my fiance is being confirmed. My fiance has to go to classes, 1 hr a week for 6 weeks. He will be confirmed in the church at a mass (not sure if it is with the 13 year olds or not). Our priest told us about the classes.

I belong to Our Lady of Lourdes (OLL) in Massapequa Park. It seems like they make things very easy for you. A friend of mine got married at OLL two years ago and she and her fiance did pre-cana in California (where they were living then). At the end of pre-cana, you get a certificate which you give to your priest. The rules may vary with parish. I know you don't have to be a parishioner to get married at OLL. There were people at our pre-cana that were not parishioners but were getting married at OLL because it is a nice church and the date was available. It probably is easier if you are a parishioner. For example, if you were not baptised at the parish you are getting married in, you need to obtain a new baptismal certificate by calling the church you were baptised in. Also, my fiance needed a letter of freedom from his church to get married at mine. If you don't have a parish, I don't know who you get that from. It was all very easy for him, though. He called his home parish and they mailed him what he needed. I dropped it off at my church. Piece of cake! There is also the option of having a priest come and bless the marriage outside of the church. Good luck!

Hi, that's funny, I believe that's the Catholic Church I attended for Kindergarten and 1st grade, and was Baptised at! :) I never made my Communion or Confirmation though? How do you go about having your marriage blessed outside the church? Thanks!

Chevaliers de Notre Dame

There is a Catholic order of priests based in St. James called the Chevaliers de Notre Dame. They are a progressive organization that are directly related to the Vatican as opposed to the Diocese. My Fi and I are having one of these priests marry us on the beach in Bridgehampton. We receive a certificate for the Sacrament. My only concern was to make sure our children can be baptized in the Church, which I found out is no problem. The cost is $500, which goes directly to a charity and is, of course, tax-deductable. Go on line to www.catholicanswer.org for more info. -- I know they cover interfaith marriages as well. Good Luck!

Chevaliers de Notre Dame

Hey, thanks for the information!!! It helps a lot! Where did you hear of them? Have you already met with them? Also, this is really bad... I should know this... what do they do during the ceremony? Well, do they go through the whole Catholic ceremony, or a shortened version??? Thanks again!

Priests

I would call the parish you grew up in and ask them all of your questions. They may be very helpful! Or else you can call the diocese of where you are now.

Melissa: Chevaliers de Notre Dame

I don`t have the paperwork here with me at work; however, the FAQ section of the site may also answer a lot of your questions. When I called, I spoke with Fr. Douglas Trees. He`s AWESOME. He can answer any of your questions. I don`t suggest speaking with your parish or diocese; the Chevaliers de Notre Dame aren`t affiliated with the Diocese. Sometimes the Chevaliers de Notre Dame have ads in the officiant sections of Bridal mags. If I can get a hold of the #, I`ll post it for you.

Just make sure whoever marries you is sanctioned by the catholic church and is not a 'cult.'
