Changing name??

Changing name??

I'm just curious, how many of you are changing your last name? I was just assuming I'd add his on at the end, but not drop my name. No hyphen, just a space...almost like making my last name another middle name. I'm a teacher, and I really couldn't imagine the kids calling me anything else!!

Now, FH was fine with me using MY last name for work, and his for everything else, but when I mentioned last night the idea of just adding his to mine and not actually dropping mine, he was really offended! Why?? I don't get it. Is anyone else having this dilemma?

Re: Changing name??

I'm immediately changing my last name for everything except work. At work, I'm going to hyphenate it for a little while then change it totally.

Its going to be very strange and a little sad to just wake up one day and not be 'me' anymore. My family is all girls, no boy cousins either, so my last name will be gone after me and my sisters and that makes it even sadder.

I mentioned hyphenating my name and it did not go over well at all. I love my last name and I'm proud of it (successful family business) but he was really offended that I wouldn't take his name on fully. We're still discussing it, but I think it really upsets him.

FH is bothered by the fact that I'm even keeping my last name for a little bit at work. I bought up even keeping my last name as a middle name and it did not go over well. He too, feels offended that I would even consider not taking his name 100%. But, I love him, he's a great guy and he never asks anything of me except this, so I'm going to respect him on it.

I am going to either hypinate or add it on but I haven't totally decided because it's sooo confusing to me (although I know i'm just making it harder for myself. I really love my last name. My family is a crazy bunch and i'm proud of that. When something happens I'm always like, 'I'm a ____, and ___'s don't take that!' it's stupid, but it's part of who I am.

Yeah, the fact that he's so excited about the wedding and me taking his last name, I feel bad saying no. Like you said, love him to death and he doesn't ask for much.

Re: Changing name??

I am changing my last name...because it would be way to long if I hyphenated it ( 2 very long Italian last names). I am going to gradually change my name at work b/c I am a teacher and they probably will always call me by my maiden name!

I will be changing my name, not sure about professionally yet, but for the most part changing my name.

i will be taking his last name. its common and easy to pronounce (unlike my current last name)

Re: Changing name??

I will be taking his last name once we get married. There are no family owned businesses in my family, lol, so I am going the traditional route, but I am a teacher as well so most likely my maiden name will stick for awhile until the kids get used to the new Mrs.

I've considered hyphenating it for work because I do research and have published under this name, but I think I'm just going to switch it all together.

I am definitely changing my last name, it will finally be short! haha!

FH had the opposite reaction, he thought for sure I would kept my name.

I will changing my name. My last name is a very easy to say last name, but it's long... it's 10 letters. His name... very difficult to pronounce, but also 10 letters. My FH offered to change his name to MY name... but I wanted to be traditional and take his name... so I will. I want to pass his name on to our children.

Yeah, men get pretty anal over it.

Well I'm glad to know I'm not alone out there!! I really thought FH was just losing his mind being so offended. I have full intentions of using his name for everything except work. I'm still undecided. Fortunately I'm not changing initials, so maybe come September I'll just have the kids start calling me Ms. F....I don't know, even that just doesn't sound right. LOL. Does anyone know the rules on this?? Can I legally change my name everywhere but with the dept. of ed?
