cheaper to make your own cardbox?

Original post by poeticmelody

Hello! I was just wondering for those DIY brides, if making a cardbox (with lets say 5-7 presents...4 main ones and the rest are small ones) comes out cheaper than buying one.

The card boxes that I've been looking at are going to cost me about $115 if I buy them ready made from For the Modern Bride.

TIA!

All of these look great! I was about to post a question about cardboxes when I saw this thread. Can anyone explain how it was done? TIA!

Mine is the red and white one. My MIL and her friend made it for us. She is pretty crafty as you can see. The main big box is a xerox paper box (she is a school teacher) and the other boxes are smaller boxes and a few blocks. She just used fancy wrapping paper, fabrics, ribbons and bows. She got everything at Michael's and just played around with the look. They did a great job! I loved it and got so many compliments on it!

I got this one made for around $50. So cute and so different! We got married on a golf course and DH loves golf so hence the golf theme. But you can do any theme you want!

IMO if I were to make one it would prob come out just as expensive as if I bought one.

I did this for my Cali reception...it was a lot of work....and nobody realized it was a cardbox!
But I was proud of it....the theme was our cross country trip!

That is so cute and creative!

I bought my boxes at Michaels (together they cost about $20). Bought french blue acrylic paint ($3) and used foam brushes to paint the boxes. I think I did about 3 coats of paint. Bought Navy blue satin ribbons and the shells. Cut the card slot in the lid of the bottom box, then hot glued the ribbon around the slot. Hot glued the shells and other ribbons and the top box onto the bottom lid. It was such a tight fit with the lids after the paint, it was very secure, and you need two people to open it!

Really, making one is a lot easier than you think, especially if you paint instead of using fabric.

So funny that this question was asked as I was just looking up fabrics and stuff.

Girls who made their card boxes, what kind of boxes did you use and where did you get them?

the square boxes were from work- they were just regular boxes- the round hat box was from a shower gift & the star on top was on a christmas tower that I got last year- I just kind of hunted around till I found boxes- but michaels & ac moore sell round hat boxes and if you use the 40% off coupon- they are not that bad

and then it was easy- just wrapped each in fabric- the way you would wrap a gift and put some ribbon & embellishments on it

I bought all the materials and my FH's sister in law made mine. She's really crafty and it came out gorgeous.
If you know someone who's crafty, you can make a gorgeous card box for about $50.

Re: cheaper to make your own cardbox?

I got a set of three graduated boxes from a craft store...then we cut out the tops or bottoms and wrapped them with heavy paper.
Then I used a knife to make the holes in the wrapping paper, and used a ton of double sided tape.

I bet there is a better way to do it though.
