If someone gave me a check from Fleet bank, can I go to any Fleet bank branch to cash it, or does it have to be the location that's printed on the check???

Re: Check cashing question...
Well I could go to my own bank to deposit it, but then it takes 2 business days to clear...If I go to Fleet, I Can just cash it, and then deposit the cash. I just don't know if I have to go to the issuing Fleet bank

Re: Check cashing question...
You can probably cash it as long as you have ID However if you do not have an account there they may charge you for it. Your best bet is to call Fleet in the morning and ask them.

Cash away...just bring ID with you. You can go to any Fleet, not just the one on the check.

Re: Check cashing question...
I know for a fact that Chase and Citibank require that you go the branch on the check to cash it..
edited to say that you should call to make sure =)

Re: Check cashing question...
Nope, don't work there, but checks are considered bearer paper and as long as the person who is named on the check is holding it, he or she is entitled to the full value of the check. I've never heard of any bank requiring you to go to the specific branch the check was drawn on (although I'm not saying that it doesn't happen), but a check drawn on a bank is supposed to be considered a check of the bank itself, not the branch, i.e., any other branch should honor its own checks since they can get into any account to verify the availability of funds.
You should call if you're not sure, but just because something is bank policy does not make it lawful. Banks have policies all the time that are more stringent than the law requires.

Def call just in case.. This has happened to me on several occasions.. (I have direct depo, but bonus checks are usually live checks)

Re: Check cashing question...
Marcella, are you talking about payroll checks? Those would be treated differently than personal bank checks. I don't know why, but at many banks you have to get pre-approval to cash your payroll checks at the bank, i.e., have to fill out an application and provide certain proof. It's ridiculous if you ask me.
I would definitely check if you're unsure.

Re: Check cashing question...
yep....I've never filled out an app. though.. and the sick thing is that they are ADP checks for a HUGE corporation.. pretty stupid, but it's happened.. perhaps you're right.. I hope so in fact, so she doesn't have to go through the trouble of going to 9247289347 dif banks! lol

Re: Check cashing question...
LOL I doubt it. I think it's a payroll issue, and personal checks are treated way differently. Bigger money involved in corporate payroll checks.

Re: Check cashing question...
Oh I hope that's the case.
It really wouldn't make sense to have to HAVE to go to that one, but it seems that theses places try to make things as difficult as possible, so nothing would surprise me
Thanks so much for your help, girlies

you can cash it at your own bank... you just have to have enough money in your account to cash it against

Re: Check cashing question...
Yes, but then they still put the 2 day hold on the $$ they're cashing it against

Re: Check cashing question...
I would call first... The bank I work for won't cash a check for a non-customer.
