My office is only open from 8am - 2pm (6 hours) on Christmas Eve, we usually close at 5pm. If anyone is taking Christmas Eve off, they are deducing a full day from paychecks instead of just 6 hours.

ETA: Im not mad about working ON Christmas Eve, I'm mad because they are deducting a full days pay from our paychecks, instead of the 6 hours we are open for

at my old job not only did i work on Christmas Eve until 3PM then we had our office Holiday party after wards. i wouldn't get home until 6PM & my parents host.
however, now i have an absolutely wonderful boss who gives up near 13 paid holidays a year. and any day before a holiday or holiday weekend, the office closes at 2. so i can not complain.

Florida has the most fcuked up labor laws. It wouldn't surprise me if it were legal.
I've worked in H.R. since 2001 in NY, and as you know, my family lives in FL. The stuff that my sister has told me happens in her workplace would definitely be illegal in NY, but completely legal in FL.

I am soo annoyed with my work regarding xmas eve as well. I have been at my office for 6 years now and every year we were closed xmas eve and new years eve and now all of the sudden we have to work those days!!! sooooooooooo pissed!! and im not talken 4 hours. im talken fricken a full day 10am to 7pm

Your not alone, I will be working till 2 on x-mas eve but I may take off I usual do but I want to try to save my days because my wedding is 2 mths after that , my vacation days go on when you started working at the company!New years eve we close at 6 !

We usually have an 'early dismissal' as well b/c of the markets closing at 2pm. Honestly, if you're concerned about taking a full day off for just 6 hours, I would prepare WAY in advance, work the 6 hours, and say 'sayanora' at 1:59pm and go enjoy your Xmas Eve!!

I'm Italian tooo (if you can't tell from my name haha) and Christmas Eve is the one day I really, really want off because we celebrate more on that day! I almost didn't get it because I'm pretty new and at the bottom of the totem pole, but thankfully my boss came around :)

i feel your pain!
But... if you work, i assume, you will get paid for the full day, therfore if you take off, you lose a full day...
if im not correct in my assumptions, then no its not fair, nor legal
