I was going back and forth on this as well. It all depends how plain/fancy your church altar is. My church altar has alot going on. I ordered two baskets to stand on the floor in front of the podiums. The florist is also throwing up pew bows, 5 on each side, skipping a pew in between. Talk to your florist, maybe they can give you a deal.
I don't think the church flowers are necessary, it's def a place you can save money on. Your guests will be focusing on the beautiful bride and handsome groom and the love shared between the 2, not paying attention to the flowers or lack thereof.
I wouldn't spend so much on church flowers. If your church is already well-decorated, then it shouldn't be much of an issue. My church has a lot going on so we opted for two baskets in front of the podium and pew bows. We have 23/24 rows, so we're gonna only do pew bows on every other one or every third one.

Most churches are already gorgeous architecturally. Instead of doing altar and pew decorations, one of my friends did a lush layer of rose petals for the aisle, which looked sooo gorgeous.
Also check to see if there is a ceremony before yours b/c the wedding before mine will have decorated the alter w/ flowers so I'm not going to buy them.
