Church Rules

Original post by Lauraclaire

Is anyone else getting married in a church that frowns upon strapless gowns? Of course my gown and all BM gowns are strapless and I need to figure out a resolution.

I know that in some other religions you have to be covered up in the church. I hope my church doesn't tell me this because my dress is strapless and I really don't want to have to wear something over it.

I've heard of this before and it makes sense. You're in a house of worship and your sholders should be covered. Like others have said, I doubt that a veil or spagetti straps would count, a pashmina or bolero would probably suffice.

my original church was all about this...told me that i needed spaghetti straps or a shrug or shawl (yeah right, cover up my dress...definitely never going to happen)

i was orignially just going to show up with what i had...like, seriously, were they really going to throw me out on my wedding day....definitely not. instead of creating drama i just found a new church instead. (seriously the rules are so different from parish to parish)

eta: the original priest also told me that a veil 'didnt count' wayyyyyyyyy old school

They didn't say anything to us at our church but I have heard this before.

My dad said that they are trying to prevent some of the outrageously sexy dresses with tons of cleavage be worn...they have seen it all. My dress is soooooo classic and regal - in very good taste. I think I will have a conversation with Father ****.

Nope, but I've heard of this before. I'd go for shawls or pashminas for the girls. It's such a stupid rule though- as if spaghetti straps make any difference at all?

I agree with you that spaghetti straps don't really cover the shoulders, but I have been in weddings where the church wanted the BM to wear them because then to them, the shoulder wasn't completely exposed. Its silly...but it worked.

If talking to the priest to see if your gown will be approved as-is does not work, I have some other suggestions??? I see your wedding is in July, so I would probably not suggest a pashmina/shawl. That seems very wintery to me! How about lacy boleros?

Like this one? I think it looks very 'Kate Middleton'! My MOH wants to have her shoulders/back covered so I was planning on having her wear a little black one... I think it's cute, and when it's sheer it doesn't look like too much coverage to me.

Another choice would be to get some little lace or sheer cap sleeves/straps that button on, so you can detach them after the ceremony. I know some gowns come with their own detachable sleeves/straps, I always assumed it was for this purpose anyway!

go to some cheap place like tri county and get the $5 pashminas... in whatever color, for you see if the bridal shop can add lace cap sleeves that detach aferwards.

yeah spaghetti straps dont really 'cover' the shoulders....

This!

Pashminas in the city are $5 a pop in every color on just about every street corner.

Shoulders are definitely a sexual part and are certainly disrespectful to have out.

Just buy some pashminas-
they'll do for the ceremony!!

It will all work out!!

My BM dresses are on the pricey side and I didn't want to have to make the girls spend even MORE money. Ughhh. The church is not strict, it's actually the particular priest's wish. Uggghhh.

Get them the shawls as part of their BM gifts?? You can find cheap but nice ones.
