church weddings

Original post by cmjd

For those of you getting married at a church, have any of you been told by the church that you and your bridal party have to cover their shoulders while inside the church? My dress is strapless and i am stressing about this!

Noooooooo, not mine. Your church told you that???

theres quite a few catholic churches that do tell you this...mine allows strapless dresses, but if your church says no then i dont think theres much that can be done

agreed. alot still follow the old school traditions of respect and dont allow exposed shoulders. my Church didnt have any restrictions but if they did, i would have no choice but to follow them. it is our Parish and i wouldnt have wanted to get married at any other Church.

Strapless dresses techinically are not allowed in church just like dresses that are to revealing (showing to much cleavage). You should be able to get away having the veil cover your shoulders. Techiically the BM wearing straps also count as being 'covered'. A lot of BM dresses come with wraps and they can wear them during the ceremony and take it off during the reception.

I think this is mostly for those that will be on the altar. That is to say the bride, MOH and readers. It is meant to be a sign of respect.

My sister's dress was supposed to be strapless but she felt more comfortable having spagetti straps added. My dress, MOH, was strapless but I had straps put in for the ceremony which could be removed and had a wrap. At the reception the wrap came off but I decided to keep the straps on.

Some churches do have this rule-we didnt have to cover up. See if there are sashes that come with the bp dresses and just ask them to wear that. It may be an option also for you or you can do a small jacket
