Just wondering how everyone cleans their engagement rings...and if you take it somewhere can ou recommend some place in nassua county (near valley stream; or out by roosevelt fields?) TIA
Edited to add: a friend told me to boil water; and add some detergent & windex and drop the ring and all the dirty and stuff on it floats around and it's nice & shiney...i've tried it; but hope i'm not damaging anything by soaking it in the soapy water...

I just use jewelry cleaner.
A friend of mine used to go into the mall jewelry stores and pretend to be looking for wedding bands and she's casually sy 'oh do you think you can steam clean my ring for me?' and they'd do it and she'd leave...

I have this stuff that my mom has used for years...Goddard's Jewelry cleaner. You pretty much take the ring and put in the little basket they provide and have it soak in the liquid for about 2 minutes. The take the ring out and they give you a brush to scrub in the little crevices to get extra dirt out. It works great for me in between professional cleanings.
I will usually take my ring in for prof. cleanings if I am going to an event

Same here, except I usually use Dawn or Mr. Clean. You def need to to use the toothbrush (soft) though because it cleans the pavilion of the diamond that is difficult to clean.

A lot of girls use toothpaste but I don't think it's good for the setting. I could be wrong though.
I was definitely told not to scrub my jewelry with a toothbrush though, it leaves scratches.

I put the teapot on, place my ring on the end of a fork, and swirl that bad boy around in the steam.
Haha. It actually works pretty well!

I don't scrub the whole ring with the toothbrush..I use the bristles to get to the pavilion of the diamond. I can def see how a toothbrush could cause scratches but you just have to be careful and use a really soft brush. But even if you happen to scratch the metal you could always get it polished. I have used the toothbrush at least once a week since I've been engaged and I don't have any scratches on the prongs/head holding the diamond. The only scratches I have are on the band part that faces my palm..but that's not caused by the toothbrush..I'm always hitting it by accident!!

I've actually never had my e-ring professionally cleaned and it's been 6 years! Is that bad?

No it's not bad. Some people never have it professionally cleaned because they clean it on their own. Do you ever clean it yourself?

Haha, definitely do! I figure it's probably safer than chemicals.
I actually used to steam clean my rings with the espresso machine at the restaurant I used to work at. (Don't worry. It was completely sanitary. My rings never touched anything customers used. Haha).
That REALLY got my jewelry to sparkle. I wish i had an espresso machine at my house so I could still do that!

UMM the teapot thing is an amazing idea - i totally want to try that.
I clean mine every day - is that sad?!?! LOL I don't sleep with it on so in the AM before I put it on i wipe it w/ those jewlery cloths.
If i have to go out and want to show it off (lol) I use the basket thing that has some kind of solution in it. leave it in for a couple of minutes - comes w/ a handy brush, dry it off and you are good to go.
But those wipes are great for a quick cleaning to give it some shine.

Re: Cleaning e-ring
I use this jewelry cleaner I bought for like 5 bucks at bloomingdales. (Its a small white bottle that comes with the soft brush and has a red jeweled ring on the label) It really makes the ring sparkle. I know they definately sell it at Kay Jewelers in the broadway mall and Bloomingdales at the Roosevelt Field mall.

I also just use jewelry cleaner. I pick it up from Wal-Mart and it works great!!
I also heard about going to jewelry stores in the mall and pretend to be interested in a piece of jewelry and they'll steam clean your ring.
