Re: Clear Channel drops the Howard Stern show
Who's job is it to define indecency?..... it has to.... HAS TO be vague, so that it can change with the social environment. There should be no definitions, only guidelines.....sorry.
If we changed the constitution every time social acceptability changes there would be hundreds, maybe even thousands of amendments.
Seriously, no one is forcing any of us to listen to this. I agree the Super Bowl thing was out of line, because it was out of context and frivilous, but should we have cancelled NYPD Blue b/c we saw Jimmy Smit's butt? Should we have cancelled All in the Family for having a Queen bed in the master bedroom of a married couple?
Beginning censorship is easy, controlling what gets sensored is not. What gets sensored next - art? I mean, do we pull Mapplethorpe books from publication?
Everyone has the right to get offended... I don't think anyone here is denying that but asking fro censorship is a loaded question with serious consequences.

Re: Clear Channel drops the Howard Stern show
The funniest thing is that HS is a HUGE moneymaker. You would not believe what he charges for a live :30 second read, half of which he usually butchers the script and you are lucky if he does not burp through the whole thing- I used to buy him for clients, so I know. He will be back on the air, b/c they will not want to lose the advertiser money. As long as people will pay to run ads on the show, he will be on air.Just like MTV said they would 'clean up' daytime after the SB fiasco, and now they have started running racy brittany spears videos again. Advertisers will buy ad space on MTV b/c it hits a hard to find demographic. HS is the master of getting young males on the radio, and so he will be back. The religious right is powerful, but not as strong as the almighty dollar

I agree that the almighty dollar will ultimately win. Once the FCC starts levying fines, broadcasters and advertisers will flee.

I hope I can explain

I personally am for natural rights and enabling people to make their own decisions...
therefore I think homosexuals should not be denied the right to marry
and Howard Stern should not be denied the right to broadcast...
I didn't really care about JJ...just thought it was cheap to get attention that way...but youre right - HS does cheap things to get attention as well...
but this one I unfortunately do side with CC...since its there company and they can do what they like...I'm mad at the way they run the radio in SD...but as a private company - I give them that right

Hey Erica,Ok but I don't understand ... If people are upset that the president doesn't condone (SP)gay marriage but it is ok that howard makes fun of gays isn't that equally as bad??? He not only makes fun of them but he forever is making a mockery out of women, continually setting an unresonable standard of how a women should look?? I am grateful that they would cendsor something like this it is just a breeding ground of inasanity, cruelness, an just downright mean !

Howard Stern is not attempting to force his views on anyone else via Constitutional amendment. Howard Stern is granted the ability to say whatever the hell he wants because of the 1st Amendment. Bush is trying to create a Constitutional amendment to deny certain groups of people the same freedom to marry as everyone else.
One is acting out because of his freedom and the other is acting out to deny freedom.

you are right...and there are many times that I have to turn him off b/c I am disgusted...
but I do enjoy some of it...I'm torn...i can't help it...its like that line from private parts...the average HS fan listens for an hour...to see what he'll say next...the average HS hater listens for 2 hours...to see what he'll say next

You're making an assumption that I support gay marriage and listen to Howard Stern. I support gay marriage. Period.

Re: Clear Channel drops the Howard Stern show
there are a lot of things in life that don't fit on the surface...like supporting pro-choice, but not supporting the death penalty
but when you look at it on a different level...it is protecting the citizen...
I know I am not wording it correctly...

Re: Clear Channel drops the Howard Stern show
Maybe you should clarify to whom you're speaking to avoid confusion. However, your statement sounds like you are also assuming that every liberal person has to follow a set of rules as to what they can and cannot like. Perhaps people listen to HS for things other than his homosexual rantings. And perhaps some people who support gay marriages are actually homophobic, but hate the idea of the government getting involved in the intimacies of people's lives. It doesn't really have to make sense, does it?

IMO Howard Stern is a pig and I could care less what happens to him...What IS scary though is the control the big media companies have over all that is broadcasted...

I've seen you say it in the past, but you're right, not that I recall on this thread. But can you honestly tell me that you don't think that the people you are referring to are 'liberals?'

Entertaining is a good choice of words.
Honestly, I enjoy a good debate. Since there isn't one, I'll settle for a semi-decent debate.
OK, so really it's because I feel that there is nothing worse than ignorance about something that someone (anyone, no one in particular) is spouting off about, and I think that instead of only throwing barbs at one another, there is an opportunity to at least attempt to educate one another about the other perspectives in the world. Nothing saddens me more than ignorance.
And besides, the gas thread got all serious and homeopathic. Bleh.
