cocktail music?

I was wondering if anyone was doing something different for the cocktail hour music from the reception? like piano player, sax, violin or anything like that! I am undecided on how to handle this, or just have the DJ play. Any recommendations or advice is needed!

Thanks!

Re: cocktail music?

We are having piano & violin for our ceremony(same location as reception)then we will have piano & sax @ the cocktail hour. Our Dj will play for 4 hours. It was a good comprimise & made sense for us because our play list is very diverse. Good Luck

Re: cocktail music?

I had originally really wanted live music at the cocktail hour. but, my cocktail room is going to be really crowded, and I have so much else to stress over and pay for that my DJ is just going to play. A little Reggae, mellow music, etc. I think it will be fine.

Re: cocktail music?

we had a string trio and I am so happy that we did. they were great. even MIL and DH's uncle, who were both professional musicians raved about them. It added such a nice touch...

Re: cocktail music?

We had a acapella group sing. They are five guys that sing all 50s and 60s tunes. They walked around and sang from a list of songs I requested but also took requests from guests. It was a lot of fun b/c it was so crowded and loud that they wouldn't have heard generic music -- but since they went around to different tables it really gave everyone a chance to hear.

Re: cocktail music?

We are having a piano player. Our reception site has a big grand piano in the cocktail area so they were able to set it up for us.

Re: cocktail music?

Thanks for the great ideas, I will have to look into this more, it seems like a nice touch to have something different for the cocktail hour, as long as it doesnt break the bank! Any recommendations on good vendors for the sax or maybe violin player?
Thanks!

Re: cocktail music?

Conact SUNY Stony Brook School Of Music. They usually have a list of students that do these types of performance for a smaller fee. Some of the other local colleges have the same.

Re: cocktail music?

Stef...that sounds like a great idea!!

I used Encore, under ceremony music, and they were fabulous...they are on this site...the woman Patricia finds the musicians of whatever instrument you want...

Re: cocktail music?

I'm having my FH's uncle play bagpipes during the ceremony, a violin and cello during the cocktail hour, and a dj during the reception.

You have so many options. Also, if you are looking for something classical, sometimes music teachers from public schools play at weddings as a side job. That is who is playing my cocktail hour. You can try to ask around about finding someone.
