Re: commute to work
I am REALLY far east- exit 68.... and I dont know what part of queens, i havent even started applying yet. i was working as an LI teacher and I was just excessed. It took me 4 years to get an LI job. Before I moved out here, I worked in the city and it was so much better, no b.s. like what goes on out here. I am totally discouraged and I have missed working for the city since I left there. I know people commute to work every day. I just dont know if this is a crazy idea!!

Re: commute to work
I live out by exit 68 too----and am probably going to take a job at exit 48. I know that's not as far as you are considering-------but it's still far, especially for someone like me who is definitely not a morning person. Anyway, I am saying it will be a pain. However, I think it will DEFINITELY BE WORTH IT!
Good luck with your decision!!!

I have to be honest here. YES you are crazy! I work in Queen's Village and i live off exit 57 and THAT is tooo much for me. My FH lived in Ridge and i tried the commute once from his house...NEVER AGAIN! Not only do you have to deal with the distance, but it is the traffic that is the KILLER! If you can't leave work by 4 you are screwed! Same in the morning. I had to change me hours to 6:30 - 3 because i couldn't stand sitting in traffic. Unless it is GREAT GREAT money...i would look elsewhere

Re: commute to work
Mass Transit or driving?
I work in the City and we plan on moving to Suffolk count allbeit not too far out. I work Mid-town and we live in Nassau right now.
My only requirements when we move is driving distance to a train station that is 'express' to Penn. The money (for my field) is in the city, so it's worth it for me.
I used live 68 miles outside San Antonio and worked in the city. Used to take me nearly 2 hours to get there and most of the time was spent in a 30 traffic jam that felt like forever. I learned to bring a book or paper and would sing along with my music then. Traffic is traffic. Nothing changes it. You can either hate it and be angry through it, or learn to live with it and just make it part of your morning. It's up to you.
Good Luck.

Re: commute to work
I have been commuting from Ronkonkoma to downtown Manhattan for about 12 years now. I'm not going to lie, it is a ***** but if you can plan the time you are wasting on the train wisely then its not to bad. It takes me about 2 hours and 30 minutes door to door each way. Its just an adjustment in lifestyle. Never plan anything for during the week and you'll be less stressed.
The money for me was huge that's why I stayed in the City. I'm making at least $40,000 more than I would on the island.

Re: commute to work
I wouldn't do it IMO. I commuted to the city, over 2 hrs each way on the train (incl. train and subway time). It was horrible, really. I was on Wall Street so my hours were not as scheduled (some days I had to stay later than others....) and if I missed one train it would be over an hour til the next (they don't run as frequently the further out you are). Working out here has really improved my quality of life. Less money, yes, but I am not nearly as stressed about time and everything I have to do. I have more time with FI and have time to do things at night during the week... Try the drive (or train) during rush hour when you would be going to work, and time it. Then figure out if you could do that every day.

Re: commute to work
FBIL lives in Amityville and drives to-and-from NYC (Manhatan) everyday. He leaves at 4:30 a.m., gets in at 6:45-7:00. Coming home he leaves at 5:00 and gets home around 7:30. It is BUMPER-TO-BUMPER the entire way. You live a lot farther, I'd be wary of making a commitment into Queens.

Re: commute to work
thank you for all your opinions since i am a teacher i would be getting out around 3:00-3:30, so i am anticipating that the traffic might not be so bad yet. the only bad part would be leaving so early in the morning. no decision has been made yet but im contemplating. thanks again for your opinions.

Re: commute to work
It depends on the $$$ I guess....my mom works in Brooklyn and lives in exit 63.....she drives. She has to drive because she has to haul equipment from one school to another so mass transit is not an option for her. Sometimes it takes her up to 4 hours to get home!
That is really rough. I personally couldnt do it. I hate my commute and it is only 6 miles away!

Re: commute to work
Plus something else to think about...YOUR CAR. That is if you are driving, which i am assuming you are. That kind of milage on a car freaks havoc. I cannot even tell you. The gas, the pitting. It is insane. ANd days like this rain and especially snow LOL leaving at 3-3:30 doesn't matter...TRAFFIC
