Compromises

Compromises

Planning this wedding and trying to figure out how to stay in budget, I'm realizing that I have to make lots of compromises. I had to choose bet a not so nice reception hall and invite everyone and there mothers to a great hall with a smaller guest list. I'm just curious as to what things you guys thing could be compromised without affecting the quality of the wedding. What compromises have you had to make?

My compromise was a Saturday day instead on a night. That was a very big money saver. But everything else I have gotten what I want.

My compromise was having my wedding on a Friday night or Sunday to save $$$

Re: Compromises

I opted for a Friday night with all the bells and whistles that my FI and I want rather than a more expensive Saturday night. It'll also allow for an entire weekend to spend with out family and friends before we jet set on our honeymoon so I'm ok with it. Good Luck!

For me, location was important because that's where the ceremony will be also. I have a small guest list anyway so we went with the location we loved and a Sat. night.
I heard on Martha Stewart that she recommends spending less on something like invitations if it means you can have better food, a better wine, etc, whatever makes it a more enjoyable experience for you. Whatever makes the night memorable to you.

We are getting married on a Friday night as well, (saves a ton). I also decided to DIY my own invitations which saved a ton of money!!! Those things can get sooo expensive. I was fortunate enough as well, to have won my wedding dress at a bridal expo and my mothers best friend is doing all my alterations (which also saved a ton). Plus, she is like a second mom to me so its special to both of us that she is doing everything with my dress!

It's all about the compromise!
I wanted to have a destination wedding (Italy) FH wanted to get married here in NY - I compromised.
I wanted a very small wedding FH wanted a large wedding. We currently have a guest list of 200 people - I compromised!
I wanted a mansion FH wanted a reception hall - I compromised!
I wanted to get married in my childhood church FH wanted to get married in his childhood church - I compromised!
I wanted to go on an exotic honeymoon FH wanted something more mellow, we are going to Mexico. - I compromised!

I think we didn't really have to do any, but I will say that it's a compromise to make my mom happy that we're having rev. nick as our officiant. Heard great things, not even worried at all, but she wants him there as a 'priest' whereas FH & I just wanted someone dressed as a regular person to conduct our ceremony.

Also, there were a few invites I would die for, but since everyone just throws them out, we found an amazing wedding suite for free online. Just uploaded stuff to vistaprint and I was done.

Same here with the Friday wedding. I joke all the time and say 'cant we just send evites??' I really refuse to spend a lot of invites bc they will end up in the garbage and id rather put it twd something else.

We are also saving on limos as we are getting married at the RH.

You both should pick one thing that is most important to each of you & thats what you spend the most on. Mine is photographer, his is entertainment.

Hope this helps!

Re: Compromises

Its all anout compromise! Between families, you, and you fh. I wanted to get married on an island. He wanted a big weddiing in ny. I wanted to wear a tight black dress. My mom and sister wouldn't let me. I wanted a Saturday night wedding and to be the only wedding. I am getting married during the day and will be at a place where theres more than one affair. I want to go to hawaii for a honeymoon. I'm not sure I'm even going on one. Its all about compromise. Make a list and decide what you are willing to compromise and things you don't want too.

Re: Compromises

To be honest, we have a really tight budget. The hall ended up taking up a huge chunk of our budget, so I just had to do some serious budget shopping for DJ and photographer (which is easy to do once you have one great offer) and compromise on my dreams to get the best price. Instead of hiring a florist, we're buying bulk flowers and making the bouquets ourselves, and I'm making almost everything else like centerpieces and invitations. We really wanted great food and a beach wedding, so we're basically doing everything else for the wedding for under $3000 (not counting the honeymoon).

It sounds like I must be compromising a lot, but really the compromising just came into how much work I was willing to put in to find the best vendors for the best prices. You just have to remember that not everything is absolutely required and you can save a lot by making some original decisions.

Where did FH compromise in all this?

We are having a backyard wedding, but since we are saving $$ on the hall, we were able to do things we would have had to cut back on if we were in a CH like hire an amazing photographer, and serve whole lobsters for dinner :) I am doing a lot of stuff myself (flowers, decor, table runners, etc) so we can splurge on a few things.

This sounds great! I love the idea of weddings at home, and toyed with the idea of asking my oldest sister if we could borrow her estate upstate

This was pretty much my thinking about invites. So I guess it's not really a compromise because I don't care a whole lot about them either as long as they are nice.
Same with limos... we may not even use them with the ceremony at the hall.

I'm a lucky girl and FH and I have similar tastes.
OH I do have to compromise on the entrance song... ugh I don't looooove what FH wants but I don't hate it, so maybe I'll ask our DJ if he can mix it and improve on it lol
