We are having a backyard wedding, but since we are saving $$ on the hall, we were able to do things we would have had to cut back on if we were in a CH like hire an amazing photographer, and serve whole lobsters for dinner :) I am doing a lot of stuff myself (flowers, decor, table runners, etc) so we can splurge on a few things.

This sounds great! I love the idea of weddings at home, and toyed with the idea of asking my oldest sister if we could borrow her estate upstate

I would of loveddddd to do something like this but no where to do it!

Re: Compromises

I definitely made my compromises with the time of year and night. I'm having my wedding on a Friday in March which really saved me a lot of money.

I also had to be flexible with looking for my churches because we are non-denominational Christians from a very small church. We needed to find a church that would allow our long time pastor to preform the ceremony - which proved to be an ordeal.

I'm also DIYing a lot of things (invites, centerpieces, menus, programs, escort cards.) This isn't really a compromise for me because I love crafting and making things - but it's certainly made it easier to not compromise on other things.

Awe, thanks! I am really looking foward to it and the best part is that we can stay as long as we want! Plus all the fun DIY stuff is great for me. :)

My parents & I wanted a band - FH wanted a DJ so we're getting a DJ

My parents wanted black tie... FH was against it so we're doing Black Tie Optional

I had wanted all high centerpieces but my FMIL made a comment that she hates high centerpieces b/c you can't see the other people across the table so we're doing alternating high & low CP's & I'm making sure she gets a low on her table so she's not upset...lol

If it makes them happy, it's worth it. They don't have much to say to begin with so when they open their mouths, I listen.

It's all about the compromise!
I wanted to have a destination wedding (Italy) FH wanted to get married here in NY - I compromised.
I wanted a very small wedding FH wanted a large wedding. We currently have a guest list of 200 people - I compromised!
I wanted a mansion FH wanted a reception hall - I compromised!
I wanted to get married in my childhood church FH wanted to get married in his childhood church - I compromised!
I wanted to go on an exotic honeymoon FH wanted something more mellow, we are going to Mexico. - I compromised!

Where did FH compromise in all this?

Good question! lol While he did originally have many opinions regarding the logistics of everything he has since really mellowed out and I have been since planning things as I would like. He has also acknowledged that he should have listened to me from the beginning. I don't mind I am really enjoying planning our big day.

My compromise was a Saturday day instead on a night. That was a very big money saver. But everything else I have gotten what I want.

This as well!!! And we got married at the RH as apposed to a different site to save money as well.

Re: Compromises

We went with a cheaper venue which isn't as nice, but workable. We are going Sunday and we are doing beer and wine only (bringing in mead).

I am doing a lot of DIY stuff such as invites, save the dates, table numbers etc, which isn't really a compromise, but it is work.

I won my dress, but my father was going to pay for that anyway. But this allowed me to get my custom circlet.

Unfortunately we both fell in love with a DJ that cost more than we budgeted for. Other than that, we have been coming at or just under our budget....

My compromise was having my wedding on a Friday night or Sunday to save $$$

I am dealing with this now but too many guests can't make it on a friday b/c of work and a Sunday I feel like people would leave early b/c they have to work on Monday. I can't win, lol.

The funny thing is I know it's mine & fiance's wedding but my parents are paying so a lot of the things I am willing to give up they want me to have! I would totally do a DJ over a band (DJ is cheaper) but my father is a musician and hates DJ's and would probably disown me if I got a DJ lol. I also would do a daytime saturday but they said 'daytime is lame' so I can't do it, lol. I'm perfectly fine with it but I suppose since it's their money I shouldn't really argue, lol.

I will say neither myself, fiance or my parents want limos that's a big savings. What we are disagreeing on is my parents want the friday (of course, they are retired they don't have to work) whereas we want the Saturday.

I chose to have it on a friday day and cut down the menu.

Re: Compromises

We chose a month that doesn't have lots of family/holiday events and a Sunday afternoon to cut down on $$, but the location is further out on the island than I planned so we need a hotel block. I'm far from a DIY person, but mom wants invites that 'set the tone' so I may learn how to use glue dots. FH wanted to wear a zoot suit, but he's wearing a tux so he gets to choose the DJ. Compromise is good. A FH that gives in is better, LOL.

We are doing a Friday night instead of Saturday Night and making sure we have no more than 125 guest max : )

Re: Compromises

We're getting married on a Friday night, having the ceremony & reception at the same place, getting only 1 limo (just to take us to Westbury Manor, it's a 3 hr minimum so might as well utilize the 3 hours instead of having separate cars), getting basic lighting for DJ instead of the whole uplighting thing, etc...I can definitely name a lot! There are so many areas wherein you can save money and there are so many areas wherein money just comes and goes and it's so easy to just splurge. Always remember though it's not all about the hall, the lighting and the little extra details, it's about marrying the person you love and being with your family.

Re: Compromises

I can't really say I compromised anything yet. I just really decided that some things were just not that important to me to waste money on. I thoroughly researched my receptions halls prior to visiting and my other vendors (thanks to you ladies!) so I kind of knew what to expect (and whether or not it was worth it). I'm doing some DIY things that will save me some $ also.

Re: Compromises

Really the only compromise has been getting married in the church. I'm not very religous, but it was extremely important to FH to get married in the church by his childhood pastor. I would have been happy going to city hall last year and then for a nice sit-down dinner with immediate family.

Re: Compromises

My compromise was having a Friday night wedding instead of a Saturday night wedding and having the reception at an RH that FH good friend works at. Both were to cut down cost.
