Computer Associates - hiring?
I know I read a post on here about layoffs but I got a call from a headhunter saying they are hiring? They need lawyers?Anyone know more about this? I told the headhunter that I heard there were recent layoffs and he said the spin is they 'cut the dead weight'?
Of course, no company wants to broadcast anything negative but what's really up over there?
I have a job in Manhattan that is about 25 minutes door to door during rush hour. I know CA is in Long Island though - but exactly where? I live in BK, near downtown. I am not trying to spend an hour in traffic each way.
Any info is appreciated. I told the guy I'd call him back tomorrow.

I don't know what you do, carrer wise. However, I do know that they are recruting at tech schools (like RPI) for June.

I work at CA . I know someone who lived in BK and commuted. It was a long trip. She did it and didn't mind it, but I would say if you like your job stay where you are. I'm not sure what is going on with them right now. They got rid of serval departments and seem to be cutting back on everything.

Cousin and two friends recently laid off! They 'trim the fat' pretty often it seems, although there are many people I know who have worked there and are very happy. They are supposedly very good to their GOOD employees. Cousin tends to be on the lazier side... not what you'd call motivated.

the commute from Brooklyn would be quite long. even if you took the train you'd have to take a cab from the train station.

Are you an attorney? I do think they are in need of legal help at this point, but from what I have heard it is a horrible environment to work in as no one feels secure. There have been many, many layoffs recently. And I definitely wouldn't want that commute...Is the $ significantly more? They do have nice benefits like free day care...

i work at CA and the daycare is not free..my daughters were in the daycare for 4 years and most of my paycheck went towards the daycare.
it's a great thing to have for working parents, but it isn't a free benefit

That's a long commute. I used to live in Clinton Hill on Washington Avenue and although you are not far from the BQE it will take you 50-60 minutes without any traffic. So I would say you would have about 90 minute drive in traffic.ETA: You are very close to Atlantic Avenue so the LIRR may be an option but still an hour on the train.

Re: Computer Associates - hiring?
Thanks ladies. I'm an attorney and an hour commute in the car would kill me. I live a block from Washington Ave so it would be a hike although I am only a few minutes from the BQE. Plus, I have bad road rage.I'm okay with my firm but thought I'd investigate an in-house option. But not at Exit 57/58 off the LIE.
ETA - And I am not interested in going to a place where everyone is on pins and needles worried about layoffs.
