I agree that it should be available.Lets say Jane Doe is on BC, and also uses condoms. If her condom breaks, i think it is fair that the Morning After Pill is available for her just to be on the safe side.
In this case if Jane is on the pill and uses a condom that breaks, I think she would 99.9% of the time be covered by the pill for pregnancy purposes. I don't think the morning after would be necessary.
I am for it in all cases. There are too many abused children, and children that are unwanted because they come along when it was not the right time...I don't see it being abused. Often users vomit for 5 days following taking the pills (I knew someone in college who did it after a condom broke). No woman would want that. I do think more people should use two forms of BC--the condom and pills perhaps--until they are really ready to take on the responsibility of having a child.

maybe i just have a problem with the whole doctors being urged to write prescriptions for it!! just doesn't sound like the smart thing to do.
This is the only part that's new so it should be the only part people should have a problem with. This pill HAS been readily available by prescription for almost 10 years now and still no reports of it being abused. And, according to the article - it's been law that it be free for 2 years now.

It all goes back to a combination of education and parenting to make sure people handle sex and the repercussions effectively.
i have to disagree...yes, sex education is very important. but this statement sounds like a contradiction in terms...if you made sure people handle sex and the repercussions effectively, then the 'morning after pill' wouldn't be needed. young people need to be responsible and use protection, period. and this all comes from, like you said, education and good parenting, (not to mention moral values) if they're going to put something out there that can be kept, readily available, then they'll take it for granted, and become irresponsible.
maybe i just have a problem with the whole doctors being urged to write prescriptions for it!! just doesn't sound like the smart thing to do.
There is no protection that is 100% - no matter how responsible you are.
The morning after pill is really a series of high dose bc - it is not an abortion pill as some would have you believe. There is no risk in abusing it - any more than there is a risk in abusing b/c. It seems a silly concept.
As Jimmysbride mentioned, it has been around for a long time - available in clinics for free. Once you stop this, the availability is lessened b/c you have holier-than-thou pharmacists in places such as WalMart and Eckerd's who have REFUSED to fill the rx b/c it goes against THEIR ethics.
When I went off the pill my dr gave me an rx to have 'just in case'. You need to take that pill the morning after - you can't wait around for an appointment and then a rx and then hope that your pharmacist will fill it for you. By then, it could be too late.
I think more people need to read the facts instead of reading the propaganda.

but now, this is going back to what serveral ppl said about responsiblity, proper protection and education. if you are consenting to sex, then you should be responsible enough to own what you done. have an 'escape button' is just saying people can do what they want and nobody is hurt. things like this dont need to go that far to have emergency..
yes emergencies do happen in life but i bet proper planning and being responsible will take away 80% of 'those emergencies'

While I am generally pro-choice. I think that people need to accept responsibility for their actions. I think in many cases a pill like this will be abused.
Sure, for cases of rape and incest, the pill should be an option. But for the careless couples ( and I say couples because BOTH parties need to be responsible) who think 'it won't happen to them', should have thought about it before they got busy.
Believe me, I don't want my tax money supporting someone's carelessness. I have a home, a career, health insurance and a supportive family and I would NEVER be so careless as to get pregnant knowing that I cannot handle it right now. Of course mistakes happen but I have been 'active' for a number of years and have yet to get pregnant by faulty birth control. Pills AND condoms can be obtained for free through many avenues so an 'after pill' isnt and shouldnt be necessary or government funded. JMO

But clearly even with all the BC methods available, look at all the unwanted children and unplanned pregnancies? Unplanned and unwanted children, when kept, are often abused and neglected. Is that a better option? Regardless of all the sex ed. anyone could teach, there will be individuals who get pregnant.

Nothing is 100% effective except abstinence, which seems less and less realistic these days for the majority of the youth out there.
I totally agree they need to be made aware of the protective measures first. But if people are educated on the different types of birth control AND the different options in case of an 'accident' there may be less extreme measures taken (bad abortions, cases of girls 'secretly giving birth and harming the baby).
And I DEFINITELY agree with you on the preprescribed piece - it almost seems like it was a misprint it's so odd.

I hope you aren't passing judgement - I never said if I filled it or not.
The only 100% protection against getting pregnant is abstinance - that is basic sex-ed 101. You can combine the pill and condoms all you want - there is still a percentage, however small, that you can get pregnant.
I know 2 people who got pregnant while ON the pill - the most effective against pregnancies.
There are things in life called accidents - and anything can happen...no matter how safe the car or if the seat belt was on or if you were double bagged with a bc pill as back up.
Banning protection goes against the rights women should have to govern their own body without having to have government get involved with such personal preferences or decisions.
IMO.

no judgement was being based...i should of taken out that first sentence. sorry if you thought that.
accidents do happen...my case is people will switch to free, readily avaiable and accessible treatments and 'could' abuse the system
i dont think they will be a clear way to handle this... its win/lose situation that will never get justified.

Re: Controversial Poll
I'm definitely for it, considering I used the morning after pill once in college. I don't think it should be used as a method of birth control, and perhaps institute some kind of limit (I know at my college, the health department would only give out 3 pills for each student, or something like that), but at the same time, I think it's too restrictive to limit its use for rape or incest victims. Take me for example - I was in a very serious relationship in College, and we were ALWAYS safe. ALWAYS. One night the condom broke, and it was right around the time I would have been ovulating. I freaked, I was crying, hysterical. I called my brother who told me to inquire at the College health center about the morning after pill. I took it, had a horrible reaction (I passed out cold and my boyfriend had to carry me to the health center. The whole night I woke up every hour, threw up and then passed out), but, at the same time, I don't know what I would've done at that point if I actually got pregnant...

Not necessarily. People go off BC pills for reasons other than choosing to get pregnant.

Just because birth control has worked effectively 100% of the time for YOU doesn't make you less 'careless' than someone who was responsibly using a condom and had it break, or was taking the pill and had it fail them. There's a reason why no birth control is 100%.
I like how you say that you would 'NEVER be so careless as to get pregnant...' as if all accidental or unplanned pregnancies are the result of carelessness. I certainly hope BC continues to be 100% effective for you.

That's scary to hear at first, I'll admit, but really they are not incorrect. The Morning After Pill is known as Emergency Contraception - a term which in itself DOES in fact mean birth control.

The ACCURATE QUOTE, if you were truly quoting me was:

I DID say that mistakes happen which would imply that not all unplanned or accidental pregnancies are the result of faulty BC (not exclusive to the pill or condoms of course). They have just never happened to me. I DID specifically speak of myself. And contrary to what the world wants to believe, there ARE people who do want to take the easy way out by popping a pill. I just feel that this 'after pill' should not be a form of birth control.

I did truly quote you. Your declaration that while being active for years and never getting pg due to faulty birth control seems to dismiss what you started that sentence with: 'of course mistakes happen'.
I do agree with you that the MAP shouldn't be used as form of birth control - it should remain what it is - *emergency* contraception. But with that 'I would never be so careless' comment, you are coming across as if every aspect of conception is always under our control (which it's not unless you are abstaining) and that if you get pg without planning to, it's only due to your own carelessness.

Re: Controversial Poll
I will say this--before getting married, I used three forms of BC together. Mistakes happen, but the more precautions you take, the less chance of something occuring. I have been on the pill for years, and my doctor said taken correctly it really is 100% effective, but that the percentage is less because of human error--forgetting a day, or changing the time you take it when it should be taken at the same time.
But, this is a different issue entirely. There will always be people having unwanted pregnancies, and I think there should be easily available resources for them.
