Controversial Poll

Re: Controversial Poll

It seems to me that Bloomberg is targeting people who use the services of health clinics and who live in underprivileged neighborhoods as stated in the report in the first post. There is apparently a need for this pill in those places. What would make more sense to me would be educating the population but I would imagine that would cost more $$$. I think perhaps ' birth control' should be redefined.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has pledged $1 million in public funding to promote emergency contraceptive pills at city hospitals.

...

Bloomberg says an additional $2 million would be spent to promote family planning in underprivileged neighborhoods.

It seems like that is what he's doing. He's putting more money into the education (family planning) part of it than the actual promotion of the emergency contraception. And I definitely agree with that.

When I went off the pill my dr gave me an rx to have 'just in case'.

but wait...i'm confused...wouldn't you want to get pg if you got off the pill??? why would you need to have the EC 'just in case'??

No, not in all cases. In mine, I was on it for about 10 years and the migraine's were coming on stronger and longer - so I opted to get off. I chose to chart and temp but that's not 100% effective.

Not everything is black and white...

accidents do happen...my case is people will switch to free, readily avaiable and accessible treatments and 'could' abuse the system

i dont think they will be a clear way to handle this... its win/lose situation that will never get justified.

But it has been available - free of charge - for some time now...I haven't heard of an influx of 'irresponsible' adults flocking to the clinic's for their free drugs.

I think people are miscontruing facts with personal ethics. If you don't want to have the option, don't exercise it. But not everyone has health insurance - though, these days, that doesn't even cover most b/c pills - they shouldn't be penalized b/c their free condom broke or b/c they were raped.

The original quote mentioned that he was proposing $1mil to education on family planning...and $2mil to education on family planning in underprivelaged areas.

The need may stem from lack of health insurance - whether you have insurance or not, b/c is being covered less and less. Meanwhile, VIAGRA is readily available and covered by health insurance. Hmmm...interesting.

In any case, the article is being misinterpreted. He is not pushing the morning after pill, he is pushing education. But with education you need responsibility and resources - why is it irresponsible to take the morning after pill after you realize the condom broke?

It's really not so cut and dry.

You are right, it is not so cut and dry, I just hope the right information gets to the masses.
