I saw this on the news last night, and thought it might be an interesting topic to discuss. What are you views on this?
Me personally, I feel in the case of rape or incest, then I'm for it. But it just might leave the door too wide open where young girls are concerned. They may take this as a green light to sleep around, being that this pill would be so readily available. I'm just not comfortable with that. Here's the press release:
Contraceptive Pill Initiative Announced (04.22.05- AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg has pledged $1 million in public funding to promote emergency contraceptive pills at city hospitals.
Bloomberg announced the program yesterday at a meeting of the National Abortion Rights Action League. The organization was honoring him for creating an abortion training program for doctors in 2001.
Under the initiative, doctors would be urged to write advance prescriptions for the contraceptives — also known as 'morning after' pills — so that women could keep a supply ready if they need them.
The city Health Department would also conduct outreach programs to increase awareness of the drug among doctors and pharmacists.
Bloomberg says an additional $2 million would be spent to promote family planning in underprivileged neighborhoods.
Under a 2003 law, city health clinics are already required to provide the pills for free.
Since entering office in 2001, Bloomberg, a Republican, has contradicted prevailing party views on abortion. NARAL has yet to make an official endorsement in the 2005 mayoral race.

I'm definitely for it but I agree with Jenn, you should always use some form of contraception.

I agree. It think should be available, but you should have to make an effort to see your doctor, etc ... it shouldn;t be readily available - how many people would just take it every time they had unprotected sex?

Re: Controversial Poll
I assume you are asking if we are for the morning after pill in general? Because the article is really about the promotions and initiatives being taken to push the pill and increase awareness -- something I think is very necessary.
As for the pill itself, yes I am for it. I don't see it becoming a form of BC too easily because it makes you pretty sick. But while I do think the availibility & awareness of it should be increased somewhat, I'm not sure how I feel about the pre-dispensing of it so women can keep it on hand. If they are going to increase the availibility & accesibility of it, then there really shouldn't be a big need to have an on-hand supply. THAT would be encouraging women to use it as BC a little: if it's available for free at every health clinic and you have your own stash at home.

How could you be 'sure'? Like I said, it makes you pretty sick. I certainly wouldn't choose to be sick for 4 days everytime I have sex over using regular BC!

not saying everybody would but people in life tend to take advantages of situations. what is sad, people dont learn from past experiences and keep doing the same thing.
prehaps being sick for 4 days will teach em somthing new

Yeah maybe!
But this pill has been around for a long time already and it hasn't become something that people have taken advantage of yet.... maybe because people aren't so aware, but it's been available for free at the clinics for a long time already.

Re: Controversial Poll
I really am surprised that twice as many people voted 'for it all the way' vs. only 'cases of rape or incest'....... i just think that having it so easily accessible, and dispensed with 'prescriptions' leaves the door open for abuse.

I understand that, but I also think if you only leave it available for cases of rape and incest there may be a tendency to falsely accuse people just to get the pill.
If people are warped enough to use that is Birth Control instead of the dozens of other methods, they may also be warped enough to lie about being raped and that creates a whole new problem.
It all goes back to a combination of education and parenting to make sure people handle sex and the repercussions effectively.

Re: Controversial Poll
I agree that it should be available.Lets say Jane Doe is on BC, and also uses condoms. If her condom breaks, i think it is fair that the Morning After Pill is available for her just to be on the safe side.
I agree with Jimmy'sbride- I knew a few girls that took it and they it made them so sick and miserable. Even if they intended to use the MAP as BC, that stopped the idea right there.

i have to disagree...yes, sex education is very important. but this statement sounds like a contradiction in terms...if you made sure people handle sex and the repercussions effectively, then the 'morning after pill' wouldn't be needed. young people need to be responsible and use protection, period. and this all comes from, like you said, education and good parenting, (not to mention moral values) if they're going to put something out there that can be kept, readily available, then they'll take it for granted, and become irresponsible.
maybe i just have a problem with the whole doctors being urged to write prescriptions for it!! just doesn't sound like the smart thing to do.
