Controversial Q (NWR)

Original post by bluegreen08

I'm hoping this wont spiral out of control, but I just saw a commercial for the show about a 500 lbs man immediately followed by one for bowflex and it made me think...

Do you think everyone has the potential to be thin? I don't mean a size 0, but not overweight and not obese.

Edit: to clarify, then I say 'thin' i mean a healthy weight. I do not mean a size 0 or 2, that would obviously depend on your body type.

i think the problem starts at a young age - i dont understand parents that let their children become overweight - when i see overweight children i feel like its a form of child abuse - most of the people i know who are obese were also obese/overweight children - in my opinion there is no reason an 8 year old should be overweight - and if your child is eating healthy and still overweight then take them to a doctor, get them to a nutrionist, make them do some kind of exercise program - do something - last night my FH and I went to grab a cup of coffee - in the same shopping center is a mcdonalds - 3 kids get out of a car - i assume they were sibilings - the woman who i am assuming was their mom (she was also overweight) stayed in the car while the 3 who were all overweight kid (all had to be under 12) ran into mcdonalds - it sickened me.....its like dont you care about your childrens health? to me that is neglecting them - its one thing to not care about yourself but you should care about your kids health....i think proper nutrition and eating habits should be taught at a young age and encouraged and i think that its something that is lacking in this country - i go to the mall and i cant believe the sizes that these kids are - i feel sorry for them because its bad for their health

Reading this quote made me think of what a lot of people must have thought about my parents...though my mother is tiny and was as tiny as you most of her life. It was hard for her to have an obese child, because she had been tiny her whole life and she is a doctor. My father was chubbyhis whole life and probably considered overweight, so for him it was less 'traumatic'.

I think you are right to a certain degree about good habits being developed at a young age. and that parents should try to take care of them. I know my parents...especially my mom tried really hard to get me to lose weight. She removed full fat milk from the house, any soda's from the house, but on the flip- side would still cook fried foods, then she started using olive oil and I could go on and on. A lot of what she did though felt like criticsm and caused a lot of emotional distance between her and I. I became a sneak eater at one point. Looking back on it I know she was/is concerned for my health.

I just want to say it's not always the parents, at some point it's the decisions we make, along with everything else we discussed such as genetics, emothing, mental and enviornmental issues.

its true about what you said in your first paragraph. Both my cousins who are sisters are overweight. But the mother is a health nut, mostly cooked very healthy food but they didnt like the food so instead they would order pizza or cheeseburgers instead of eating the healthy food the mother gave them. She purposely wouldn't keep things in the house bc of this either. My aunt always worked out too, has workout machines at home and every dvd workout you can think of. Even now that she is almost 50 she is very in shape and has a great body. So its definitely not always the parents. I feel bad bc she too would criticize them though i really don't think that helped the situation at all.

Denise I have seen those kids on the talk show circut and that to me is a form of abuse!! Those kids are not being raised properly they can not decide for them selves and their parents are not doing whats best for them in that situation

It really is, especially when the one kid couldn't walk down 5 steps and the mother said he wasn't able to play with other kids bc he got tired so fast.

I don't know its such a hard topic because there isn't just one answer or solution. Gastric bypass definitely isnt the easy way out bc of how dangerous it can be, i think people who say its the easy way out dont realize the risk going into it. Plus after you have the surgery you do have to stick to eating certain portions and watching what you eat. I know somebody who had it and he has to control his portions, there are some foods that he can't eat at all now bc he won't digest it well. So not like you have the surgery and then you can go eat whatever you like and as much as you like and you lose the weight.

There are so many different reasons as to why somebody is obese. So to say this is the one solution just do this and it will work really can't apply to everybody.

On the topic of overweight children ... what do you all think of parents who feed their children unhealthy foods at a young age when they are just starting to eat? My sister and her husband are overweight. My sister always has been, and when she tries hard she loses, but right now, I don't think she is trying very hard. Her daughter is one and yesterday at a party she was feeding her pasta and ice cream, and letting her drink a little soda. Not a lot. I don't want it to sound like my sister does not feed her nutritiously, she does definitely. But I kinda feel like if you get a kid that young used to those things - which of course taste better to a 1 yr old than gerber fruit in a jar - she's going to want JUST THAT. What do you think???

re: gastric bypass, i have a technical question for kim or anyone who can answer. Do you always have to eat FAR LESS than what you ate before in order for it to work for you? My friend, who is a nurse, and I were talking about this the other day and she said it shrinks your stomach to te point that you only ever eat a teeeeny bit of food. I thought you slowly eat more, but yes, in the beginning, you only can eat a bit before you are full. she said if you eat more, you'll just go back to the weight you were at. Anyone who can comment???

im talking more like grammar school age - why is a 6, 7, 8 year old obese? who is feeding them? its their parents! and the kids i personally know through the family are that way because of what they are eating - i know this because i see them eating CRAP all the time and their parents are also overweight and eating right along with them - and that really bothers me!

Have you seen the movie where the guy eats McDonalds for a month? I forgot what it's called, but they did a segment on schools and the crap they serve for lunches... and then they showed how a state-run school for 'troubled youth' (juvie) served really healthy nutritious food, and it cost less. The junkfood companies are huge lobbyists and want to keep the kids drinking soda, eating really processed junk, etc.

It's called Supersize Me. That movie disgusted me. I eat their salads almost exclusively now. Every once in a while I'll have a chicken snack wrap, and about once a year I have a quarter pounder because it's yummy, even though it's gross.

most of the time yes its bc its what the parents are feeding them. But also most schools dont serve healthy food. Kids get allowances and they'll spend it all on junk food. Or truth is many times parents make a nice good home made meal and what alot of ppl think isnt that bad can be. Or the problem is you have some kids who are so picky and just wont eat anything. My parents would beg me to eat certain things and i wouldnt when i was very young. I would be able to sit at a table for 3 hours with a plate of food in front of me and not eat it, i didnt care if they told me i couldnt leave until i was finished. After a while of this going on it can get annoying lol. I was actually too thin as a kid, i look at pics and think ugh look at my knees so yeah i would eat alot of mcdonalds as a kid bc it was something they could get me to eat, loved pizza too. After a while it was ok either the kid starves bc i seriously refused or we have to give her some things she likes. Not like i would cry and they would give it to me right away, like i said they tried ALOT and for a long time too lol. But also after a few years somehow i got really into food haha and wasnt a problem anymore. My teenage years i was lucky and could eat as much as i would like and would be fine. My early 20's wasnt bad but then after i went on the BC that was a shot and now they dont even use it anymore bc it is bad for you, i did gain weight right away. During that time i worked out ALL the time and was eating very strict and healthy but still wouldn't work. After 2 years finally i was able to lose weight and got into it very strict until i lost all the weight i wanted to lose. Now it S*cks bc i do have to watch what i eat, but i also have stomach problems and most food gets me sick so bc of that i have to be careful what i eat. My stomach issues do help though with me eating more healthy. But its something i do have to be conscious about, i can indulge but obviously not eat like that everyday. I do have to work out.

Some of my family is obese...my cousin had gastric bypass. I'm totally against it. I believe you can be healthy and overweight..and I honestly think he didn't try and used it as an easy way out.

JMO.

What about for people who DID try and couldnt?

Ok, I'm against it because I think it's so dangerous.

I think HE used it as an easy way out. And i think others do too. Yea, it takes the weight off, but I know ppl who do it, lose weight and don't change anything else to get healthy. they still eat unhealthy food, don't exercise or anything. if ppl use it as a starting point, then I guess that's different. But I don't know anyone who has done that.

OMG that was disgusting, i havent really eaten mcdonalds since then maybe a handful of times and i watched this a long time ago. Most schools the food is very heavy not to mention they have soda machines. Or now they sell those cans of lemonade meanwhile it has as much sugar as soda does. I remember when i was a kid it was the same, im sure it was for most of us. Our lunches consisted of raviolis, pizza, chicken pattys with breadcrumbs and fried though lol, macaroni and cheese and lots of other unhealthy food. Plus you would have ice cream you could buy, and other sweets too.

My parents never really allowed soda in the house except when we had people over, so I never got hooked. In college I started drinking fresca (grapefuit flavored) because they had it in the dining hall, but stopped again once I realized carbonated drinks were making me sick. FH used to drink 1-2 sodas a day at work since they have it free, but he cut back and started drinking tea instead. It's definitely hard though, our culture is so all about this stuff. We'll have catered events at the law school and they will have 5 kinds of soda and I have to take a plastic cup and go to the water fountain if I want water

I was already a sneak eater by those ages, sad to say but true. So my parents did have control over what was in the fridge, but with me sneak eating that was another story. My parents...mom especially had already made it clear to me that I shouldn't eat a lot or certain things and I would sneak it.

Just a funny story to lighten the topic somewhat but related to my seak eating as a child. I remember once I got caught because I had a new kitten that follwed me around and i snuck something out of the fridge and didn't realize the kitty went into the fridge, so we couldn't find her and kept hearing meowing and finally we found her in the fridge on top of a loaf of bread. They knew it was me because nobody else had gone to the fridge and the kitty only follwed me around.

It really does s*ck. Pasta is my favorite but its hard for me most of the time to eat it now bc of the acidity in tomato sauce, or if its a different type of pasta the heaviness of it can have me be in pain the rest of the night. ALot of fried foods gets me sick now too, i cant even go near mayo. But yeah then it will also be simple things, i can eat salad and still it will bother my stomach.

I do think frame size has something to do with it, b/c I think that I'm built wider than other girls my height, and I could probably never be a size 2 just b/c of the circumfrance of my hips or what not...

This is so true. My hip bones are not going to get smaller so I will never be a size 0.

Minus those who have thyroid conditions , or the FEW people who are genetically predisposition for overweight, it is all the choices you make.

I didn't gain weight because I was eating salads and lean protein, I gained for the poor food choices and lack of exercises.

I think we can ALL be at a healthy weight for our height and body frame

congrats to those who have lost....it is a struggle, I have been on both sides a size 16 and a size 5 and the thinner I am, the less I eat .

not sure because im college ive taking nutrion and health classes, and have heard more then once that a lot of it has to do with genetics.

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)

Along with genetics, I think habits and feelings you develop about food growing up really impact you.

I try really hard (both sides of the family are obese, but not my siblings) all of us are really active but have to watch what we eat, exerice, etc. And I could do a lot better than I do - I am about 10 pounds heavier than what I would consider a happy, very healthy weight for my structure.

I notice my DH, who's entire family is pretty thin, they have such great habits - he drinks like 7 20oz water bottles a day without even thinking about it - he always has and its just natural for him. He doesn't even like sweets and was raised eating so healthy he doesn't crave them.

I noticed my family, likes to indulge in big meals as rewards, bonding, etc. etc. We are more likely to have a huge midday meal and then nothing later on for dinner, again, an unhealthy habit.

I have noticed my parents eat to cover up emotions and I know I used to do this ALOT, I try to get better but its hard.
