I'm hoping this wont spiral out of control, but I just saw a commercial for the show about a 500 lbs man immediately followed by one for bowflex and it made me think...
Do you think everyone has the potential to be thin? I don't mean a size 0, but not overweight and not obese.
Edit: to clarify, then I say 'thin' i mean a healthy weight. I do not mean a size 0 or 2, that would obviously depend on your body type.

I think that i am looking at this question more on a broader side. I see a lot of girls saying 20-50 lbs can be lost and i agree,. but when you have hundreds to lose in order to be a thin person.. it seems more desolate to get there.
Oh that sounded so sad kim 170 is a huge accomplishment! Don't feel desolate!

Thank you ladies! It is not something I shared so far only because,,, so many times I have heard that it is the easy way,, and then defend my doctor's and my choice. It is hard when you really dont have any other option and the medical field is at a loss on how to help you any further with out an 'intervention'

I feel amazing now.. and want to work on my last 35!!
But thank you for the compliment!!

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)
for alot of people it does start when we are kids. Sometimes parents give the kids food just because they cry for it and give them lots of sweets and they eat lots of junk food. I see it with lots of kids all the time. I have to say that I ate mcdonalds and burger king alot as a kid, i ate pizza alot and hot dogs. I didnt eat much and those were some of the things i would eat and i drank soda too. I was a very thin child so whatever i would actually eat they would give it to me to gain some weight. Hmmmm what happened to me lol
I do remember watching one show with young kids from ages 2-8 who were very overweight. One kid was 3 years old and when he came out on the show had a hard time walking down those few stairs. They showed what each kid ate everyday and it was more than i can even eat and most adults period. I mean it was friend chicken and pancakes for breakfast and that was just the beginning. One mother said if she didnt give her kid this food he would cry and she would feel bad so she would give it to him just so he would stop crying. obviously the kid caught on that if he would cry he would get what he wants which is what most kids do so its about not giving in to that. Also if you do come from an obese family then meals will be more heavy so unfortunately for many its all they've known since they were kids and to change when they are teenagers and adults will be very hard for them. They say for many its an emotional problem its psychological and they need to deal with those issues first before even trying to lose weight or else they wont. They found many ppl who were physically abused, mentally abused by others from a younger age who used eating as a way to shield themselves from others in many ways. Some who were raped and hated any attention they got after so it was their way of dealing with it, the problem is whatever it might be many times they don't realize what the real problem is. Sometimes it becomes kind of a comfort zone for people depending on what their situation is.
Then you have some who cant lose weight for other reasons.

Technically, I think everyone has the potential to be a healthy weight but it's definitely harder for some than for others..i've heard of people having to eat healthy and exercise for 2-3 hours a day everyday in order to be a reasonable weight..most people don't have time for that

Thank you! I appreciate that! I honestly get annoyed by the commercials and ads in news papers about how simple it is to be a 'better version of you'. It was and still is tough!

It really is, especially when the one kid couldn't walk down 5 steps and the mother said he wasn't able to play with other kids bc he got tired so fast.
I don't know its such a hard topic because there isn't just one answer or solution. Gastric bypass definitely isnt the easy way out bc of how dangerous it can be, i think people who say its the easy way out dont realize the risk going into it. Plus after you have the surgery you do have to stick to eating certain portions and watching what you eat. I know somebody who had it and he has to control his portions, there are some foods that he can't eat at all now bc he won't digest it well. So not like you have the surgery and then you can go eat whatever you like and as much as you like and you lose the weight.
There are so many different reasons as to why somebody is obese. So to say this is the one solution just do this and it will work really can't apply to everybody.

its a really hard question.... many factors play into our size:
1. genetics, obviously our bone structure and so many other things 'run in the family'
2. upbringing, a family with active and fit parents vs a inactive and not fit parents
3. heritage, some family traditions include huge family meals, which are usually not healthy or lower calorie
4. income, a poor family will eat more affordable, and sometimes less healthy foods
5. life style and/or career, a sedentary worker vs a physical laborer will play a part
6. lastly, or own drive to be health..... i think this is the most important thing, it is easy and sit back and do nothing and assume your cards have been dealt or you can get up off your rump and start to do something about it....
examples: park at the end of the lot, start slowly adding walking to your everyday activities makes a huge difference eat a side salad instead of fries eat in instead of out every night
i think if you truly want to be healthy you will make the changes necessary to get there.
i started dieting and working out about 2 years ago and lost over 40lbs
sorry this is so long, just how i feel.....
I've been obese pretty much most of my life. I agree that it's many factors that play into weight. All of the above and I would include Metabolism as well. At my heaviest I was 330lbs...also considered a healthy morbidly obese woman. I lost 80lbs and have kept of 60lbs,and it has not been easy. At my lightest in HS I was 190 and you could see all my bones in my chest, not just the collar bone, I'm 5'4'.
I think to dismiss the difficulty of losing weight and keeping it off and saying that genetics and other factors don't play into is just wrong. Obesity is not only physical, but it's mental and emotional, thorow into the mix genetics and enviormental factors and you have quite a mix.
Weight is individual and body composition and structure as well, because we all have different genetics, that goes for everyone. There are thin women who have to watch everything they eat and there are thin women that can eat everything and the kitchen sink.
Gastric Bypass is not as easy as everyone makes it out to be. I know many people that have had it and it's worked wonders and others who are back to the weight they were at the time of the operation. Most who gained it back looked at it as a quick fix rather than something that requires just as much commitment as any weight loss program.

yes this is what i mean by when i see these kids i feel like they are neglected - and not just kids on talk shows - i see overweight kids everyday! i do believe that sometimes it has nothing to do with food and there is something else causing them to be overweight - but i feel like i see way to many overweight and obese children and i think the problem is their parents/society - look at all the commercials, fast food ads, restaurants, the calorie intake is ridiculous!

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)
first of all congrats to you Kim, and you are very beautiful, I said this before and I will say it again, your smile is stunning, you are a beautiful person in and out. my friend Kim Severens, yes that is her real name went in for the gastro surgery 5 years ago, she passed away two days later. she had health problems no one was aware of, not even herself. it is so easy putting weight on ,taking it off is a whole different game. like I said in my last post here, some peoples weight gain is due to medication or thyroid problems, my friend Brenda has a rare liver disease, from one of her meds she so desperately needed she went from a 145lb to 267 very rapidly. she is losing some but not as fast as she would like. so wieght can contribute from many things, just be happy with yourselves and your life goals, everyone is beautiful be it looks, body personality. we all have something, so be proud.

I agree with both. It is also scary bc at times no matter how much you loose you will always feel 'big'.

Wow Kimbalina good for you!! One of my sisters had something similar to gastric bypass...she had the one where they put a band to make your stomach smaller. She has lost a lot of weight so far, but it was definitely a challenge.
I agree with alot of girls on here that genes has ALOT to do with it. I have 4 sisters, we grew up in the same household and had very similar diets, but 3 have always been heavier then my other sister and I. The 3 of them are from my mother's first marriage and 2 of us from my father. I know it's very hard for them to lose weight, especially after having kids.

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)
Hmmm this is a hard one. I do think that some people have slower metabolisms and/or medical conditions that prevent them from loosing weight, but I do think that some people just need to cut back and work out.
I am one of those that was small my whole life until I hit college. Over 4 years I put on about 25 pounds. I would have kept gaining probably 5 lbs per year after that but I took control and went on a diet and have pretty much stayed on a diet for the last 6 years. I work out alot too and that helps. But alot of people just think I am small...but that is not the case. I do have a small frame but I constantly try to watch what I eat, work out work out work out, diet, diet, diet, etc, etc. If I didnt do this...I would definitely be 50 pounds heavier. Its a pain in the a$$ but I want to be healthy and live a long life!
Ok that is my 2 cents. But I do agree that others have a harder time and it could be genetic or medical.

i think the problem starts at a young age - i dont understand parents that let their children become overweight - when i see overweight children i feel like its a form of child abuse - most of the people i know who are obese were also obese/overweight children - in my opinion there is no reason an 8 year old should be overweight - and if your child is eating healthy and still overweight then take them to a doctor, get them to a nutrionist, make them do some kind of exercise program - do something - last night my FH and I went to grab a cup of coffee - in the same shopping center is a mcdonalds - 3 kids get out of a car - i assume they were sibilings - the woman who i am assuming was their mom (she was also overweight) stayed in the car while the 3 who were all overweight kid (all had to be under 12) ran into mcdonalds - it sickened me.....its like dont you care about your childrens health? to me that is neglecting them - its one thing to not care about yourself but you should care about your kids health....i think proper nutrition and eating habits should be taught at a young age and encouraged and i think that its something that is lacking in this country - i go to the mall and i cant believe the sizes that these kids are - i feel sorry for them because its bad for their health
Reading this quote made me think of what a lot of people must have thought about my parents...though my mother is tiny and was as tiny as you most of her life. It was hard for her to have an obese child, because she had been tiny her whole life and she is a doctor. My father was chubbyhis whole life and probably considered overweight, so for him it was less 'traumatic'.
I think you are right to a certain degree about good habits being developed at a young age. and that parents should try to take care of them. I know my parents...especially my mom tried really hard to get me to lose weight. She removed full fat milk from the house, any soda's from the house, but on the flip- side would still cook fried foods, then she started using olive oil and I could go on and on. A lot of what she did though felt like criticsm and caused a lot of emotional distance between her and I. I became a sneak eater at one point. Looking back on it I know she was/is concerned for my health.
I just want to say it's not always the parents, at some point it's the decisions we make, along with everything else we discussed such as genetics, emothing, mental and enviornmental issues.

well the problem is with most food in the US period. If you go to other countries you will see that most people are not overweight. One of the biggest factors with americans being overweight is what they put in the food. In other countries they dont feed their chickens all this crap just to get a big sized chicken lol and what they do to other animals too. They dont add all this crap to their other food either. You look at most ingredients and theres also so much bad things for you in them. Corn starch, so much sugar, salt and thats nothing compared to most of the things in foods. In other countries there is nothing put in the chicken, their animals are not fed just to make them bigger. Most food is very natural. When i went away to visit family, i ate alot bc they all made me lol but i didnt gain weight, infact i lost weight. And all this low-fat, non-fat, margarine, and sugar substitutes is actually not good for you. People think they are doing well by eating foods labeled like that but the problem is that it is foreign to your body so your body won't know how to break it down. For generations past our ancestors didnt eat maragarine for example, and our bodies dont know how to break it down so its worse for you. Same with sugar substitutes, you are better off eating the real thing. Diet soda is actually worse for you than regular soda.
There is a reason why americans are more overweight than most other places and by alot. Most other countries its a small percentage that is overweighy
