I'm hoping this wont spiral out of control, but I just saw a commercial for the show about a 500 lbs man immediately followed by one for bowflex and it made me think...
Do you think everyone has the potential to be thin? I don't mean a size 0, but not overweight and not obese.
Edit: to clarify, then I say 'thin' i mean a healthy weight. I do not mean a size 0 or 2, that would obviously depend on your body type.

I definitely don't think everyone can be a size two, but I do think everyone can be a healthy weight. I just think it is much harder for some people, especially those who have diseases that affect the metabolism like hypothyroidism or diabetes. But, when I was in Europe I noticed that the fattest people around were the other Americans I was with. It seemed like all of the locals were thin or at least a healthy average weight. That makes me think a lot of it is cultural - we're big on living a fast paced life and eating garbage as a result.

Along with genetics, I think habits and feelings you develop about food growing up really impact you.
I try really hard (both sides of the family are obese, but not my siblings) all of us are really active but have to watch what we eat, exerice, etc. And I could do a lot better than I do - I am about 10 pounds heavier than what I would consider a happy, very healthy weight for my structure.
I notice my DH, who's entire family is pretty thin, they have such great habits - he drinks like 7 20oz water bottles a day without even thinking about it - he always has and its just natural for him. He doesn't even like sweets and was raised eating so healthy he doesn't crave them.
I noticed my family, likes to indulge in big meals as rewards, bonding, etc. etc. We are more likely to have a huge midday meal and then nothing later on for dinner, again, an unhealthy habit.
I have noticed my parents eat to cover up emotions and I know I used to do this ALOT, I try to get better but its hard.
Funny you say that - my family also likes to indulge in big meals to bond or as a reward. Me and all my siblings are thin, and apparently so were my mom and dad growing up. Now both my parents are overweight, and they are both unable to diet because of the importance of these big meals.

i have a lot of overweight to obese (over 400 lbs) people in my family and even I am overweight but i think everyone has a healthy weight point that isn't necessarily a skinny point.
i'm healthy when i'm about 150lbs. Keep in mind, I'm 5'2' so 150 is coincided obese according to the doc. But when I was 'normal weight' for my height I was only that weight b/c I wasn't eating and I looked horrific and sickly.

i didnt read thru the whole post but I heard that your child should not eat too fatty foods the first 4 or 5 years of their life. This will predispose them to be heavier in the later years. I think this and the fact that some peoples genetics are predisposed causes this. I have seen a tv show that stated some people that lived thru great depressions where there were no food actually lived longer than people that had food readily available. Its interesting how your body works. But a good diet and excersize no matter what size you wear is important. Dad gave me the honor of big birthing hips My a$$ will never and was never a size2. thats life.. What does bother me is that the people that are 500 lbs that need to have surgery or whatever are getting denied by the health insurances becuase it makes more sense to them to keep them sick. or the worse wait for them to have a heart attack

you dont have to starve yourself to be under 150> I am shorter and i have been up to 150 but I found that if I actually eat less food but more frequently I can get under that. Its the maintaining thats the hard part. And I think our friends and families make it harder for us when they see how good we are doing.
