Re: Controversial Topic

One of the 'arguments' against interracial marriages at the time was that we would become a homogeneous society...because everyone would run out and marry someone of a different race.

Why would a homogeneous society be a bad thing? Because there would be no one left to hate.

If you accept homosexuality, there will be one less group to hate.

Honestly, I believe this in my heart. We can debate about this again and again. I will always feel this way. I continue to debate the issues because I hope that I can get at least 1 person out of the hundreds of views this topic will get to at least consider my point of view and not make a weak slippery slope argument about the what if's. If you don't want to marry a gay person then don't. But don't stop them from marrying each other.

Gay marriage is prohibited by ALL also. Just like you can't see how the two are the same is the same the anti-gay marriage people can't equate hoterosexual relationships to homosexual ones.............

MARRIAGE is NOT prohibited FOR all. (Gay is just an adjective, its not the institution...)

I absolutely agree but how can you deny the slippery slope argument? Once people start to make decisions based on equality and fairness how do you decide who deserves fairness and who doesn't, and that in of itself is the nature of decision making, placing a value/importance of something? How is someone not going to get 'left out'?

Well, I view polygamy, at its very core, to be unequal. There is one person (invariable a man) who has several wives. Those wives are not permitted to have other relationships with other men, only their shared husband. Each wife is taken on to bear more children, which I think is demeaning. The wive makes much more of a committment than the the husband does. The fact that there are women who are willing to live this lifestyle does not make it okay. There are also woman willing to walk the streets as prostitutes. Should we make that legal as well?

When we are talking about homosexuals marrying we are talking about a committment between two equal partners to live their lives together the same as a heterosexual couple does.

Some of these arguments are the same about what the anti-gay marriage people are using........which is also my point. When someone takes it upon themselves to make decisions such as these, there is bound to be injustice. Prostitution is a 'victimless crime' therefore why not make it legal?

Which arguments about polygamy did I make that anti-gay marriage people are making?

So now polygamy and prostitution should be legal? I wonder if you think there should be any laws at all. I can't decide if you are Socrates incarnate or if you just don't want to say that you are opposed to gay marriage. That is not meant to be insulting, I just haven't seen so many questions thrown at me like this since I was first introduced to the Socratic method of teaching in law school.

I avoid your slippery slope because I believe:

homosexuality = biological effect
polygamy = personal choice

Interracial marriages were banned for all people too...or was it just between all African Americans and white people? Not so sure.

What it comes down to is you can't convince me, I can't convince you. We have to agree to disagree.

Just pray I don't decide to make my career in politics!

Ah Law school, I took a class at Fordham one time that had stuff like this, I feel a little flattered Becky

I am not against gay marriage at all, as I stated in the last controversial thread about this topic my sister and best friend in the world is gay. I am for gay marriage but I am not blind to the other issues that may arise, which is all I am trying to do.

I am all for laws I mean the arguments that studies have shown they have shown to help abuse etc....I know that you know that anti-gay people could use some of those arguments against gay people.......

*still smiling at the socrates incarnate thing*

How many other groups out there are not legally allowed to have civil unions? If gay couples or polygamists for that matter want to get married, why not? It doesnt affect me, as long as they pay their taxes and healthcare. Both are a relatively small portion of the overall population-legal civil unions will not ramp up our healthcare costs or anything like that. I do not believe in or support polygamy, but I believe in a persons right to live in that lifestyle if they so choose.
Yes, the lifestyle of polygamy can be abusive, but so can religious cults. And they are not illegal. Why not practice a live and let live civil society? Where is the 'slippery slope?' Who else is on line for the right to marry?

That is what I am saying, about the all or nothing, MOST peolpe want gay marriage but not polygamy..what is the difference..........The slippery slope thing was just meant to illustrate that fact

I wish I could...You are very lucky to be a lawyer, I resigned from that idea a long time ago. YAY to all the lawyers in the room and the rest of us without the degrees.

I just have a question for you, Xelindrya -

You say you see the 'Domino Effect' in your mind, yes?

How would you feel if you were told you couldn't marry Jim, because he's a different race than you are, and people are afraid of the domino effect from interracial marriage?

This is not meant as a slam, but I do want to point this out to you. The exact same 'Domino Effect' argument was used to attempt to prevent YOUR Marriage.

BTW - I'm only using you as an example, because I know your personal situation. I completely support your marriage. Besides, you're one of my favorite republicans!!!

I'm not sure I understand what gay marriage has to do with polygamy.

Why can't any TWO PEOPLE get married?

Not three, or four, or man and dog, or woman and cat?

Re: Controversial Topic

But it's not about indivual freedom ...I don't think gays are arguing that people should be allowed to have any kind of marriage arrangement hat they want (i.e. polygamy, people marrying animals), they just want what marriage is: a loving bond between two people.

Yes but I am talking about the powers that be and their arguments not gay people. Once you make a definition of marriage someone will be left out in the cold(so to speak). Of course gay people will say that they are arguing for the right to marry ONE other person, but polygamists are people just as gay people are and they have rights also.....arguments can spring up all over the place for and against(like they have on this thread)......polygamists are adults who choose to participate in this lifestyle and if all things were fair they would be allowed to.........hope I made sense....

Re: Controversial Topic

This is not an issue about Gay Marriage, it is an issue of equality and discrimination.

If you are against gay marraige you are for discrimination and non equality, and the gov't taking away your fellow americans civil rights.

When the Gov't decides that Women can't vote, or can't work and need to stay home and riase kids, then will you (collective you) be outraged enough to want change?
