No matter how I feel personally about abortion, I will never ever ever support legislation that deprives women of their right to decide what to do with their bodies.
I completely agree.

Well like abortion nicotine is something you do to yourself also. Alchool is a touchy subject, but I defenitly am against Drunk Driving which is illegal.
Nicotine is not something you just do to yourself - second hand smoke causes all kinds of terminal illnesses.
PS. I'm pro-choice. However, I don't agree with it as a method of birth control. I do however think rape victims should not be critized for their decision.

I am not pro-choice. I believe that life begins at conception.

which i guess is why more and more laws are being enforced that prevent smoking in enclosed/confined areas

Felt like saying... it is sooo nice to see a good debate with out any nastiness
kudos everyone
Not to sound like a b!tch, but this isn't much of a debate. Everyone so far has had the same opinion - everyone is pro-choice.
Fine then i will re-phrase...
KUDOS to everyone for being able to discuss a controversial topic...like adults

I am extremely pro-choice. But I feel that the decision has to be made quickly. In my religion (Jewish), it can be done within 3 months since the fetus is simply tissue and not much more. A miscarriage early on in that stage would simply look like a heavy period.

I don't believe in abortion. Never have and never will.
I will say this, I find that most women who say they are pro-choice don't totally agree with abortion. The argument isn't really about the life/ fetus etc. The bottom line of the argument tends to be about fear. They fear a future in which men control the bodies, lives and futures of women. they simply want to protect their 'rights.'
Sounds corny, but I have found that to be true in most of my conversations with other women.

that is exactly how I feel. After 3 months its a different story.

Re: controversial topic...
Here is my take on it: Please understand this is only my take. Some people are not ready to be parents. One could be 20 chronologiclly and 13 mentally and be simply unprepared to be a parent. She doesn't feel she would be a good parent. Who are we then to say she HAS to be a parent? I simply don't feel that is fair. Then, the government says not only do you have to raise that kid, but you have to keep the kid off drugs, ensure teen pregnancy is down, raise that kids with good morals when other children can be bad influences, if she is single- the government says 'be a mother and a father, and work full time while you are at it so you could set good morals'. That is a lot for any woman to take and if you take away that womans choice, we don't have the luxury of saying 15 years later, when we watch this family on Jerry Springer, 'Where was the mother?' 'How come the mother did not teach this child right from wrong?' and cluck our tongiues. She admitted 15 years earlier she did not think she could be a good mother. Just my .02.

I was pro choice, but now that I am in medical school, I am not. A baby at 21 weeks reached out and held the doctors hand, while doing an in utero spinal bifida surgery.. At 21 weeks, some fetuses can still be aborted I AM NOW ANTI!!!!!!! Unless there is harm to the baby or mother...but as a form of birth control absolutely NOTbaby samuel
I saw this get passed around on the web - and frankly, I think it's a fixed photo. I don't believe it for a bit. And even IF a fetus' hand touched the doc's hand, it's not in the way we think - at 21 weeks it's not reaching out to say hi. JMO.
ETA: WOW _ I just realized that 21 weeks is 5 months and holy S&*(! Yeah, I don't like abortion at that stage.

Actually, I would fear that the child will not grow into a loving family.

My personal beliefs ios that it may be right for some people but not me, I could never do it for any reason...BUT I know people who have and although my insides say'things happen for a reason' , it was meant to be, etc...I think for them , if a child had come out of it, it would have greatly suffered so I'm mixed, just know I could not do it...but I JUDGE no-one ever on what they choose to do.

I feel it should be the woman's choice. I would have a problem it if was done later in the pregnancy or if a women did it several times.

I'm so impressed with everyone's ability to be calm and not judgmental on this thread. The abortion debate usually gets so nasty, so quickly. The way I see it, it's a divide in our society that simply has no solution. On the one side, you have people fighting passionately to prevent Big Brother from declaring that women can be forced to reproduce when they don't want to. That's a noble cause. But on the other hand, you have people who truly believe that innocent infants are being murdered, and they're fighting to save them. That's also a noble cause.
The problem is, the pro-choice folks and the pro-life folks are fighting two different wars. One is about women's rights. The other is about infanticide. They're never going to agree, because they're not even fighting about the same thing.
I think whoever said that most pro-choice women aren't really in favor of abortion is right. I've never met anyone who thinks abortion is a swell idea. But most women are aware (as I think men are not) that sometimes abortion is a necessary evil.

It's my body! It's my choice and don't try to take that away from me!
ditto, I don't even need to read the rest of the thread.
ETA: Pro-choice is NOT NECESSARILY PRO-ABORTION. I'm just saying that I think I should have the right to choose what happens with my body.
