hi all i just wanted to get your opinions on a possible cruise HM since i myself have never been on a cruise but was looking into this as an option.
Originally i really wanted to go to hawaii but that is going to cost upwards of 7k+ and FH and I are almost in contract to buy a house (which means the only money we are going to basically have is whatever we have saved in our wedding fund thus far)... so i was thinking of cheaper alternatives. i saw online that there is a cruise out of NY that goes to Puerto rico, st. thomas, st. maarten and turks and cacios... but being that i have never been on a cruise or know what it would be like i wanted to get your opinions... would you recommend this as a HM, should i look into something else? can you recommend any cheaper alternatives that possibly includes everything in the price (i figured the cruise would at least include the food and entertainment on the boat!).
Thanks!

Re: cruise hm?
I think if you have never been on a cruise i wouldn't do it for you HM
I have never been on one but i hear you either love it or hate it and if you don't like it you don't want that to be you memory for your HM

Re: cruise hm?
What about looking into a Sandals HM? I don't know all the details, but I know that they are all inclusive: food, entertainment AND drinks.
I have never been on a cruise either so I am not much help, sorry!

Re: cruise hm?
a cruise is similar to an all-inclusive resort....just on water. everything is on the cruise. the ports are great because you can see many places in a short amount of time.
i have been on 4 cruises so far, and we are going to do one for our HM
the rooms are smaller than a hotel -- for king beds, they just double up two twins. if you can (and some cruiselines are having great deals now), opt for a suite or a mini suite. just so you have more room
but most of the time you are not in the room...there are always activities on the ship and there is food available 24/7. the only thing not included in the price is:
*tip (about $10 pp/day) *drinks (this can add up!! but usually you can bring wine with you..which saves some $) *activities/tours at port
hth. if you have any questions that i can help with FM me!

Re: cruise hm?
i'm doing a hawaiian cruise for the honeymoon. i've been on a cruise before, but FH hasn't. personally, i love them and would have no problems doing it for every vacation. just something to think about....the cruise out of NY is in the atlantic ocean and can be a little bit rougher than a cruise in the gulf of mexico. ultimately, it's your decision.

Re: cruise hm?
I've been on a bunch of cruises but I will admit I have never been on one that left from NY. They always leave from either Miami or San Juan Puerto Rico.
Cruises are great but I have heard leaving from NY or anyother Northern port the water's are really rocky. So since you have never been on one I wouldn't risk leaving from NY. Other than that cruises are GREAT!!! They have great deals the food is awesome and there is always something to do.
Congrats on your house!! but I would try and save up enough to leave from down south to avoid an increased risk of sea sickness!!

Re: cruise hm?
ive left from NY before and never had a problem. maybe i was just lucky. but the boats are so big so you really dont feel it much....
but if you do get motion sickness, it might be better to rethink this.
maybe you can fly to FL, stay there a few nights, then go on a shorter cruise?

I've taken a cruise from NY down to the caribbean and I would definitely do it again and as a HM. We went in August and I didn't notice any problem with the water at all - the boat is so big you hardly notice it. I would definitely splurge on a bigger room for your HM (one with a balcony). The drinks do add up, but not as much as you would think - and you can bring your own bottle of wine with you to dinner.

Last cruise I went on there were alot of Honeymooners and a cruise is alot of fun. Also if you want all inclusive check out Sandals in St Lucia. My sister just got back from a Carnival cruise and she can't stop talking about it.

Re: cruise hm?
I have terrible motion sickness and I was fine when I cruised.
We are doing a 9 night cruise out of NJ for our honeymoon...FH has never been on a cruise either, but he is really excited. I definitely recommend cruising!! It is sooooo much fun...there is always something to do, and the nice part about cruising out of NY or NJ is that you have a lot of days at sea...so you get to spend a lot of time relaxing by the pool or doing all the activities on the boat

Yes they do seat you with other people at dinner, however they try to match you up with people like yourselves. My FH and I were seated with honeymooners and we had alot of fun with them.

I love cruises. I have been on two and will be going on one for our hm. FH has never been on one but loves the idea of it so didnt mind going on our hm with a cruise. You do sit with other people but if you dont want to, you can ask to sit alone. My parents have taken cruises that left from NY. They love them. They have been on almost all of the cruise lines and toward most of the US and europe. I def. recommend a cruise. I find that the prices are great and they keep having deals where they credit your room with $50or more per person which you can use when you buy anything on the ship like drinks or pics, etc/

this isnt true on all boats/cruiselines. you can reserve a table for 2...but not all cruiselines acknowledge that.
i know NCL has tables of 2 alot, since its freestyle dining. and i believe celebrity and princess have tables of 2 as well (not 100% tho)

Re: cruise hm?
would you guys recommend island hopping (carribbean) or a 1 place (Bermuda or Bahamas) as a 1st time cruiser?

Re: cruise hm?
We're doing a cruise too, out of NY. My first time, FH has cruised b4 but different cruise line. FH hates to fly so this was the best option for us.
We decided on different ports (3), instead of just one. that way we get to see some places we would not normally get to see. I'm very excited!!
Good luck and enjoy whatever you decide.

i know when the cruise boat goes to bermuda it docks...so basically the boat is your hotel. you have free roam of the island all day/night, but the cruise is your 'home.'
When you cruise to multiple ports you are there for a limited amount of time (5 - 14 hours, depending the port). Sometimes you can feel rushed...
I would suggest looking at the ports in questions and figure out how much there is to do there and how long you would like to stay.
If you dont like to feel rushed at all and this is your first cruise, it may be a better idea to just do the 1 port option.
Take a look at teh cruise itinerary to get a better idea of time frames
