Re: Cupcake tower vs. cake
I am pretty sure the cupcake tower is more expensive...at least that is what my BM said. It is because they have to individually decorate each one so it takes a lot of time! I have no pricing...sorry!

Re: Cupcake tower vs. cake
Our package with Timber Point includes a cake with Black Forest Bakery. When we went in to discuss it, we said we wanted a tower of cupcakes, discussed the decoration--colored icing, flower on each, pearlized sugar--they threw in extra cupcakes just in case of damage so everyone would have one, and it was the same price as the cake would be. Or, at least, didn't cost us anything extra. Maybe it was less, I don't know. They're bringing a really nice tower for display as well. I'm quite happy how it turned out. So, all I can say is, talk to your baker and see what they say! I know that cake decoration really varies in price depending on what you get--buttercream, sugar flowers, fondant, whatever.
One thing you might want to consider is a small cake for the top of the tower so you have something to cut. We're having two other cakes, so it's not an issue for us, but I've seen cupcake towers in magazines and online where there was a small--5', 6'--cake on top for cutting.

I'm pretty sure that cupcake towers are more expensive, but I honestly don't know.
