Original post by angl2001

I am definatly on the cheaper side as far as weddings go and i wouldnt have it any other way........the one thing i am soooooooooo sick of hearing and i have said it before is when people say ' you get what you pay for' now if you have the $$ to spend on a huge expensive elaborate wedding then go for it!!! but i just hate that people say things like that to me its not that it hurts but its friggin ANNOYINGGGGGGGGG lol i dont think there is anything wrong with spending alot on a wedding .....then why do people think that its wrong to not spend as much????ugh!

i Think i am gonna have an AWESOME WEDDING even tho i am spending just over 20K

so my question to you is very simple

I know you can 'always' trim your guest list, but my dad has a big family and they are all close. We expect to have 200++ guests, which affects the price of a lot of other things.

We are doing a Sunday afternoon wedding too!

We ended up spending more than we set out to spend but its still not anywhere near what a lot of people spend on LI weddings.

I think people get caught up in 'oh, I have to have this vendor' and it may be a good vendor, but just b/c something is expensive doesnt make it less off than an expensive thing. I have many vendors who arent the 'big names' and arent the most expensive but im sure they will do a great job (if my research is correct- haha)

I need to go to sleep now b/c im rambling..lol

I'll admit it, I hit yes but here is why: You said you spent 20k on your wedding, to me that is A LOT of $$. You were on a very spend conscience budget and 20k is still what you ended up spending. Unfortunately, getting married in LI means $$$ and unless you can fork over the cash, an awesome wedding might not even be possible.

There are a lot of factors that go into making a wedding 'expensive' and/or 'great'

1) # of guests: you can have a small wedding with 50 people and not spend a lot of money, or have 400 people and spend 8x as much money

2) food: you could have a backyard BBQ buffet and people will enjoy themselves, or you can pay $300/person and the food s-ucks...it depends on what your style is

3) in my opinion, music is the most important thing about a wedding...if people are dancing and enjoying themselves, they'll remember that more than the over-cooked steak. You can spend $7000+ for a band, or spend $2000 for a DJ, or spend nothing to hook up your iPod to speakers...it really depends

4) I see people posting that they're paying $5000 or more for photography alone...does that contribute to a great wedding? maybe to the bride and groom who will look at the photos, but honestly most guests won't see those photos, so is it worth spending the money? it's your call.

4) flowers: sure they die, but I personally LOVE flower centerpieces and I feel that'll add a lot to my wedding, so I'm willing to spend a lot on them. I'm sure many others have skimped on the flowers and still had a great wedding

So, I can't say answer yes or no to your question because it depends on so many of these factors.

Right, that's what I said in many more words...everyone has their own style and they'll spend whatever they want on what they feel is important, so you can't say that you have to spend a lot to have a great wedding if that's what you want or don't want

I don't think you have to spend a lot of money. As long as you are happy with your choices. I could have had a really expensive wedding but I would have to wait 5 years. It is more important to me to get married now so we can start our lives together! That's what a wedding is supposed to be about so I'm happy.

i think it all depends on the bride and groom. there is no sense in spending money on things...unless the bride and groom are going to be the ones that appreciate it. Some people might think some of my choices are unnecessary or maybe they will think I am cheap because I didn't have certain things. But when it comes down to it... as long as I have everything I want and nothing I don't want ... my wedding will be awesome.

i feel that i AM spending a lot. lol...but i know compared to most brides on here i'm spending less and i am sooooooooo happy w everything about my wedding. so no, i honestly don't think you have to spend a lot to have an amazing wedding. it depends on what your taste is. if your taste is finer and more expensive, then maybe you do need to spend a lot to have what you feel is an awesome wedding.

me and FH are more casual though...so we are fine w the amount we're spending b/c it got us what we wanted.

I will admit I hit yes. I will also admit that I am one of those people who notices when corners are cut at a wedding, and I'm a catty b*tch who will chit chat about it with my mom. 'Oh did you notice they didnt have any hot dishes at the cocktail hour?' 'Oh did you notice that the centerpieces were cheap looking?' Yes, I do it and I bet that a LOT of you girls do too, even though you may not admit it!!

what is your definition of a lot of money?

Do you have to spend a lot of money to have a typical Long Island wedding? Yes.

However I also think that $20,000 is a lot of money.

I think it's about perspective.

I am having (or planning to have) an amazing wedding that FH and I as well as our guests will enjoy. I splurged on some things, and skimped out on others. I could have spent a TON more but do I think my wedding would be better b/c of it? No.

guess i should have phrased it better.......

i was looking at it based on what i see......

as far as money goes think 20K is not alot yes its alot of money for me cause thats pretty much what i make in a year but in the world of weddings....its really not alot.......when i see some people paying double or tripple what i am i can even imagine having to come up with that ammount..

What i usually like always turns out to be convienent expensive and safe. and im lazy so I spend money....thats how I look at it.
Being $$ conscious was too exhausting for me lol

I agree with this. MY wedding HAD to cost a lot of money bc I am too lazy to look for anything else. Not that I got the MOST expensive vendors BUT if i liked something I got it and I never tried to look for cheaper. I didn't go for the highest priced vendors though, I only went to look at moderately priced ones. But then again if I fall in love with something I get it - my invitations cost more than my dress (over $2K) bc after I saw them I stopped looking.

Also, my family would have noticed where i cut corners. As it is my wedding was considered a 'budget' wedding simply based on the fact that it wasn't at Russo's on the Bay. LOL Yes my 'budget' wedding at Jericho Terrace, please laugh at that. They would have NEVER let me 'get away' with homemade CPs or having no favors. My favors were crystal and stainless steel sugar/grated cheese holders. My parents go to weddings where they get porcelain serving trays, gold plated jewelry boxes, real crystal serveware. We went to a shower where all of the women got these collectible figurines that I know cost over $100 each - so there is no way I could have turned around, invited THOSE people to my wedding and given them a coffee scoop - just not happening.

BUT I don't think OTHER weddings have to cost a lot for me to have a good time and to enjoy the wedding. I hope that all made sense.

ETA: we did not go into debt over our wedding and we paid for it ourselves. we paid for everything in cash and basically started at zero the day of the wedding

I don't think you have to spend a fortune, but I do think you need to spend some money in certain areas. Especially with a NY wedding.

I think that my wedding will be awesome because of what I am chosing to be there. Which may not be for everyone.. as in my vendors, guest and things that are happening for our day. We are spending more than I wanted to and honestly yes, I think it is making my day exactly how I wanted it to be. If I had to chose words to describe the wedding it would be Elegant and Entertaining
ETD-
Yes I do notice when people try to get around things. That is why I am rethinking my DYI tall centerpices... I dont want that to be a focal point of conversation later.

see this is my point. It's not a lot to spend compared to other totals I've seen on the website but ask other girls that are planning a wedding outside of ny and they'll think your insane.

I think in some cases you do get what you pay for, and in others you dont. And thats why we all do research! So we know where to splurge and where to save. :)
