curious poll...Do you honestly feel you have to spend ALOT of $$ to have an awesome wedding??
Original post by angl2001
I am definatly on the cheaper side as far as weddings go and i wouldnt have it any other way........the one thing i am soooooooooo sick of hearing and i have said it before is when people say ' you get what you pay for' now if you have the $$ to spend on a huge expensive elaborate wedding then go for it!!! but i just hate that people say things like that to me its not that it hurts but its friggin ANNOYINGGGGGGGGG lol i dont think there is anything wrong with spending alot on a wedding .....then why do people think that its wrong to not spend as much????ugh!
i Think i am gonna have an AWESOME WEDDING even tho i am spending just over 20K
so my question to you is very simple

guess i should have phrased it better.......
i was looking at it based on what i see......
as far as money goes think 20K is not alot yes its alot of money for me cause thats pretty much what i make in a year but in the world of weddings....its really not alot.......when i see some people paying double or tripple what i am i can even imagine having to come up with that ammount..
see this is my point. It's not a lot to spend compared to other totals I've seen on the website but ask other girls that are planning a wedding outside of ny and they'll think your insane.
I agree- BUT, if you want what you typically get in a NY wedding outside NY, you are going to spend double or triple! I grew up in Maine, and we were looking there first, and to get what i wanted as far as entree options, top shelf open bar, hor'dourves, and a cocktail hour, and the type of setting i wanted, it was going to cost us about 2.5-3 times what we are paying per person here.

we didnt spend alot in comparison to what other people are spending however my guests loved the upgraded cocktail hour..my boss even raved about the sushi and he is a sushi snob...we had alot of entree choices and the ability to have seconds or a completely different entree and the vienese hour......and honestly with all of that we were just over 25,000 and I made my own centerpieces etc,.......and honestly to make my own ended up costing me as much as flowers would have....but it was what myself and DH wanted...our wedding was perfectly us from start to finish .......starting with no typical ceremony music.......I walked into what a wonderful world....bridal party to the smallville theme song and we even walked back down to its the end of the world lol....I guess what I am trying to point out to those on tight budets is you absolutely can do it and still make it everything you wanted and more !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont think you have to spend a lot of $ to have a great wedding but I think no matter how you try to avoid spending a lot of $ even if you go low key weddings are just VERY expensive!! I am trying to save as much $ as I can wherever I can and its still going to be SOOOO expensive!!

I think spending money on the important elements such as entertainment, photography, etc. needs to be done. Whatever is important to you, you should spend money on. Other than that- my wedding isn't going to s*ck because I don't make programs and menus and slipper baskets..or because I searched for the best deal on the catering hall, dress and other things.

I think it's not a question of cheap but a question of really assessing what you can afford comfortably. With that comes compromise and dtermining what's more important. FH and I don't want to be in any debt after this wedding is done which is why we've budgeted a certain amount and are sticking to it, some things are getting cut out and some things we're spending more on. It ultimately comes down to being smart about your $$. Not only in wedding planning but in your everdy life in general.

I have said it before....I think weddings have gotten truly out of hand. I think a wedding should be about celebrating with your friends and family and as long as they are there you will have a wonderful time no matter how much you spend. My parents got married at a church hall and loved every second of it. i went to a wedding recently where it was family style food and very low buget and the bride had an amazing time. 20 years from now you wont' look back and say 'man those were some great flowers' lol or look back and say 'wow I am so glad I paid extra for the lights with the DJ or the TV's' whatever you do now will be out of style and you will laugh at how out of date everything is..lol....I think everyone will realize once the day is done that they spent a fortune and didn't really have to. You should have weddings for yourself not to impress everyone else. People say food is so importnat. ....most brides don't get a chance to eat! So after this long winded response....No i don't think you have to spend a lot of money.

I think the first thing of importance is the attitude of the couple who is getting married. There has a to be a certain level of energy from them to sustain the guests.
I think the 2nd most important factor is the entertainment. A DJ, MC or a Band is crucial to a smooth, good time.
Food is next. The meal was something FH and I were willing to break the bank on, to a point. We couldn't fathom adding a lot of 'extras' but the food as a whole had to be great or it was a no go for both of us.
Decor was and has been the lowest man on the totem pole.
Even my wedding dress took a back seat. I am paying under 1000$ for my dress, alterations and all of my accessories and I still feel like there had to be a better way to spend it.
but secretly I LOVE my dress and I can't wait towear it!

we didnt spend a lot and my wedding is wonderful
I think any money spent beyond a justice of the peace ceremony and a family dinner is excessive.
I say you spent a LOT of money!

honestly i think if you spend less you probably have an awesome wedding since you probably will have more money in the bank afterwards.
I also feel that if i had my wedding it would of been upstate or out east in a barn more of a rustic theme and my friends did the ipod dj thing and spent money on decor and lighting and tents and catering but not on the stupid crap i think that would of been sick. BUT if it rained it would of stunk and being that we wanted to get married in March it wouldn't of worked out IoI

i do not think that you have to spend ALOT of $$$ to have an awesome wedding - i think the bride and groom and guests will have a great time if the couple is having a great time, if the food is good, and if the music is good and that doesnt have to cost ALOT of $$$....
i'd be lying if i said i couldnt tell the difference between a 20K wedding, a 50K wedding and a 100K wedding (im just using those amounts as a generalization) - and by difference i mean the cosmetics of the wedding - the location, the CH foods, the menu, if there is a VH (obviously the more upgrades there are the more $), what kind of centerpieces are on the tables (high arrangements with lots of exotic flowers are going to cost more than low CPs with roses or a candle CP), the entertainment - in general bands are usually more money, (some people have both a band and a DJ - that is $) BUT i dont think an upgraded CH and lots of flowers make an awesome wedding - i think its the people, the tone of the wedding and even the guests that attend that can make a wedding awesome no matter what the actual cost

I agree that its the guests as well that make an impact on how successful the wedding is.
Having said that, there are a handful of people who make wedding planning infuriating. You know who I mean, the people that tell you what their idea of a 'great wedding' is, the kind of people that make you second guess everything!!
The only way I can keep from losing my mind is to avoid these people until my wedding day. I wish I wasn't serious!
One of FH colleagues wife told us at his christmas party that we should have an extended CH, seafood and a VH, because no one ate the meal due to over eating at the CH.

We are keeping costs down too. I have been to expensive weddings that just weren't very good. FH and I decided to just focus on things we feel make a great party -- food and dancing. So the flowers could have been bigger, who cares. People should be too busy eating all of the great food and dancing to even notice! We also are not having limos are anything. We are perfectly capable of driving ourselves to the ceremony and RH site (the same place).

since DH and i paid for the whole thing ourselves---to me what we spent was a lot....BUT to others it probably wouldn't be as much.
either way---i think we spent maybe an avg. amount---perhaps slightly less for our wedding--and i'm so proud to say that i still have guests, a year later, tell me that it was the best wedding they went to (besides their own)---because we splurged on our DJ and that made a difference for so many people

I coundn't have said it better , i feel the same way I have been to 'expensive' weddings where the food was amazing ect, but it was BORING , no one danced and I have been to ' budget ' weddings where i had the BEST time .
