So, I happen to be one of the girls who actually likes her curly hair! Anyone else out there? I am trying to find someone who will work with my own curls and not suggest that I blow it out and use a curling iron. I was thinking about trying to find someone who works at a 'curly hair salon' in the city but dont know of anyone... Suggestion for hair people. I am looking for someone who will travel to Roslyn. Please?? Here is my hair. I am going to wear it all up...
you should post this on the vendors board as well you might find someone...

Devachan salon specializes in curly hair.
I never heard of that place. Is it really expensive?

i never went bc i have pin straight hair but have seen it on tv and they said that they specialize in curly hair and very known for this. It is in the city. I know theres also an LIW'er who used to work there so she would know better.
I go to Ouidad and they want $500 to come out the day of and do my hair, which happens to be in Roslyn as well.
There is a girl named Jen who works out of a salon in Cold Spring Harbor called Colors, I know her haircuts are not as pricey as the city and she does do updos. You can try her.
I have a trial appt with Nicole D'Angio and hopefully she will be able to do something for me. Not sure..I'm still on the fence about going curly or straight but almost positive I want an updo.
Good luck, let me know how it turns out.

Re: Curly Hair
I was actually just checking out the site. It looks really interesting. I have curly hair but I prefer to wear it pin straight. Someday maybe I'll embrace my curls. lol I do feel though that nobody knows how to work with curly hair so maybe one of these days I'll have to check that place out. Thanks!

Re: Curly Hair
Hi I have curly hair and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! You are not alone. I used to work at Devachan and at Mario Diab Salon both in Soho. Everyone at Mario's does not do curly hair so you should either ask for Carlos or Mario. FM for Devachan information. If you would like I can recommend a few people. I have two great stylists/friends that will be coming over to do my hair and make-up.
-Many Blessings!

Hello - I am a fellow curly hair girl! I love my curls however I went straight for my wedding. I thought about doing curly and did got for a trial but it just wasnt what I was looking for. I just always do my hair straight for formal events and that is always how I pictured it for my wedding! Anyway it looks like you have gorgeous hair...and I have a recommendation for you -
At my salon, Christine is EXCELLENT with curly hair. When I get my hair done (for trial too) she curls every single curl with her fingers, then diffuses it. She is very creative too and will think of something beautiful! Or you can bring pictures if you have something in mind.
The Salon is called Head Rush and is located in Williston Park - number is 516-280-5797. I would at least go for a trial - totally worth it. Also they will come to you for wedding day.
Here are some pics from my curly trial. Also I wanted me ears covered thats why it is low and there are a lot of tendrils out.

Beautiful pics!
I think I look funny with straight hair...makes my face look much longer.
I am getting married in August hot humid summer day hopefully it doesn't rain. I would hate to wear my hair straight, and then have it half frizzy straight and frizzy curly...the worst of both worlds. LOL.

Re: Curly Hair
I have really curly hair and I wanted it curly the day of the wedding. My hair dresser told me to blow it out and re do it with a curling iron just to make it looked more polished. With curly hair we all have that tendency towards frizz and she just wanted to make sure I wasn't worrying about that. And at the end of the day with the weather we had, she was right.

I LOVE my curly hair, but for the wedding I'm going to blowdry straight and then curl....want to minimize frizz.

Re: Curly Hair
I am a fellow curly hair girl...and I too love my curls...so I know how you feel!! A few weeks ago I asked a similar question on the boards...not only do I need a day of stylist, but also a stylist for regular trims and cuts. I never get anyone who has any idea how to work with curly hair...they think they do, but they treat my hair the same way they would straight hair and that has bothered me my whole life.
Anyway, StacyJill2009 (THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!) told me about Jenn in Cold Spring Harbor at Colors.......and OMG OMG OMG!!! She is AWESOME!! Where has she been my whole life!!! Haha!! I gave her a try...a mere $65 for a hair cut by someone who is trained by Devachan. Jenn is amazing, she was totally knowledgeable and she gave me a lot of tips on how to style it and also take better care of it. I am going to go to her for a trial...I just haven't had time to take care of that yet. I loved the salon, it was very cute and quaint, very relaxing. They offer you coffee or tea when you go in and it's a really adorable place. It's small so you get a lot of attention, which I liked!! Definitely give her a try...I was a little leary, but I figured she couldn't do anything worse than what other stylists have done to my hair!!! And it turned out great!!! I will never go to anyone else again for a haircut but Jenn!!
PS, the Devashan technique is that they cut it dry, which totally makes sense. Curly hair is completely different when it's wet than when it's dry. So as she's cutting it, she's also styling it. After she's done with the cut, then she takes you back to the shampoo area and washes and styles it. So just be aware that it 's not your average cut!! It's a little different! Good luck!! FM me if you have any questions!!

Re: Curly Hair
MandaB,
I am so happy that it turned out so well. Being a fellow curly girl and one that used to work at Devachan I attended the classes they would give to outside stylists. Most of the stylists didn't catch on but there were some that did. Thankfully for us long islanders, Jenn was one of them! A lot of times people take a class, ONCE and all of sudden they are certified. That always petrifies me. Being a long islander now I think I might just check her out too when I don't feel like going into the city.

Re: Curly Hair
Thanks so much for the help on that last thread!! I really did want to go into the city, but it was just so expensive!! I figured to give it a try and it worked out great...I'm so glad!! I also researched on the web for a good curly stylist in the area and her name came up on curlyhair.com soooo many times. A lot of people were raving about her, so I figured why not??? Anyway, thanks again for the advice, and I would definitely recommend her!!

Re: Curly Hair
I am using Stacy Pitt (see pics in album) - we are pretty much just enhancing my natural curl and making sure it looks perfect , because as you know with curls some days it just curls 'wrong!'

Re: Curly Hair
I don't think she will travel but Cindy at Soto salon (Deer Park) is great with curly hair. My friend booked hair appointments for us for her wedding and I got 'stuck' with Cindy. I was soo not looking forward to it because any time I've had my hair done (prom, etc) I've gone home and cried and asked mom to help me fix it. Anyway, I fell in love with Cindy. She sat there and curled my entire head with a curling iron. She was so patient....I love her.

Re: Curly Hair
I've only gone to Devachan for years. Keith is my stylist and I love him. He doesn't do weddings. I had a trial with someone else there, and hated it. I had a trial with Christine from Head Rush on Jenna's advice, and she was great. If I'm ever in LI I go to her for a haircut and save a lot of $$$ going to her rather than Devachan. For my wedding, I ultimately used Kacey from Khoulouds. She used a curling Iron, which I was dead set against, but it really looked good. She didn't blow my hair straight first, but rather she followed my curls with the iron. No frizz at all, and it looked really natural.
Definitely check out Christine and Kacey. Good luck!
