i cut my thumb 2 weeks brfore the wedding & needed stitches.
I went to the doctor and have a cyst on my thumb, where my cut was (inside) and it keeps getting bigger & it hurts, now Thursday I need to see an orthopedic.
Anyone else ever have this & what will the doctor do to me?

Re: Cysts-question
My dad had one - they usually just open it up to drain out the fluids that are causing the swelling and then close it back up. Anastetic (sp??) depends on the location/severity. It will be tender for a little bit afterwards but you'll be just fine!! Good luck!

Re: Cysts-question
I have one on each hand. I do not have pain from them. I just shove them back down when they stick up. My mom wanted to slam my hand with Websters she said that would cure it!

Jenn- Just talked to Chris (an orthopedic PA)......he says, the doctor will cut it open with scalpel (sp?) after numbing you of course and drain the fluid...

Re: Cysts-question
I have one on my wrist since 1995 and its hard now, it is painful sometimes and they drained it once and it got bigger so i never went back, but the doc did say slamming it with a big book would help..

Re: Cysts-question
I have them on my ovaries. They come and go each month. If they core, you have to have them cut out, otherwise I am pretty sure they just drain them.

Re: Cysts-question
Don't worry Jenn, it won't hurt. They numb it first. I had this done after I cut my finger open.
But I promise it won't hurt a bit!
Jenn it's not cancerous from a cut....it's just scar tissue that didn't heal correctly and left a sac that can fill with fluid. Don't worry sweety!!
Milk it and get John to baby you afterwards.

Re: Cysts-question
Jenn- sorry for being so graphic....you will have a local so you won't feel pain....i'm sure they will prescribe a painkiller for afterwards!! Who knows, they may be able to drain the fluid with a needle too....try not to worry...I'm sure it hurts more now then it will....

Re: Cysts-question
I had this huge cyst on my wrist and it hurt. It came out of no where and was huge. By the time I had x-rays and did the whole referral thing to the specialist - it went away on it's own (but I have the x-ray to prove it was there at one point). Not sure if it is just the wrist - but I hear they can come and go one their own. I could have had it drained or removed but there would be the chance it could come back. I would ask your doctor about the chance of it coming back. The doctor at that time said it could have been a result of me lifting weights (I had actually been using my little 5lbs weights around the time) or even banged it funny.

Re: Cysts-question
I think AL has one on his finger - he just got a referral today to an orthopedic. His is a hard painful lump near the base of his middle finger (which is currently preventing him from weraing his wedding band ).

Re: Cysts-question
DOn't worry!!!! They numb you first. I have a friend who had one removed from her wrist around Christmas and she was only out one day from work.
