Dad Advice

I'm new to the boards and was a little nervous about posting something personal, but I figured if anyone could help out with this it would be you ladies!

My dad is very to himself and emotionally closed off to the world. He never shows emotion or lets you know how he's feeling. I've been engaged for about two weeks now and he still doesn't seem happy about it. My family keeps trying to tell me that 1) this is the way he is, he just doesnt show emotion and 2) i'm his only girl and it's hard to let go. I've been trying to chat with him about it but each time I do he finds a distraction and the conversation is over.

Has anyone else had a dad who just didn't seem excited/happy for you? Do you think it's just a 'daddy's little girl' issue?

I think he's just having a hard time accepting that you're not his little girl anymore. He loved you first and I bet he's going to have a hard time giving you away. And that just goes to show how much he does care. Maybe try and talk to him about it. Let him know that no matter what you'll always be his little girl!

Congrats first off....

The day I got engaged- all I got from him was 'Very nice, I'm going for a walk'. It kind of bothered me but I am his little girl. My older sister is not engaged so this is all new to him.
We never mentioned anything to eachother about a wedding until I asked him to look at he RH we picked out. He was excited to come and he was acting so different there, I got excited. But Now- he is back to his quiet self about the whole thing.

I think it is hard for a father to see her daughter take this big step in their life- I am sure your dad will come around eventually too. I know it is hard, but you have to try and understand.

We all go throught this I think

Re: Dad Advice

congratulations on your engagement!

It sounds like your dad is just having a hard time accepting that your are leaving the nest and you're growing up. I would give him a little more time to get used to the idea and then have a talk with him about what he's feeling and about what you are feeling.

It will all be okay, don't worry

My dad was kinda the same way. He was all stressed out and not really excited, I really thought he was going to make the whole experience miserable for me. BUT....the day of, he was AMAZING and he even said things to make me cry.

My dad was excited but he acted regular about it - he wasn't like super hyped up or anything - I think this is true for most men it may not mean that he isn't excited but its just strange they don't show emotion. I wouldn't give it too much thought im sujre he will come around...

At frist I was hurt because my Dad didn't seem excited to find out his first born was getting married, and I thought it was because I decided to move in with my fiance before marriage (he is old fashioned). But I started to get him involved in some of the planning, I would tell him when I booked the DJ, about my ideas for our father/daughter dance and asked for his opinion. We went to see the location together and etc and now he is excited and asks me every time about the planning process.

Re: Dad Advice

I had this problem too, I'm the baby girl, I have an older sister who is not yet married and one of my brothers is married but he lives in Florida and he's a boy so it's different. When I told my day he got all choked up and all he could get out was 'Are you sure you want to get married?' I shouldn't laugh, it was kind of cute, but it also made me sad because I wanted him to be happy and excited. It's been a little over a year now and I think he's getting excited now the closer it gets, we went a couple of weeks ago to get his tux and Fh, my dad and I went out to dinner afterwards and he was asking a lot of questions and seemed excited. I did notice that the one topic he ignores at all costs is the honeymoon Dad's will be Dad's, don't worry, he'll come around. He just has to get used to the idea of 'giving you away' to someone else. Hang in there
