DAVID's Brides - Question about 'TAKE HOME the DRESS' POLICY

Hi Ladies,
Im actually from the newlywed board, (I graduated from this fun side 2 years ago . But now I have a question regarding my best friends wedding.
She found her dress at Davids Bridal. Her wedding is nexy July. She decided to start shopping early just to get a head start and to satisfy her anxieties of being a BRIDE. Well her dress is in already (she was told it would take a few months, and it took maybe 2 weeks!). Her dress is in, and she was told she must take it home and 'preserve it' until it's time to get fitted (I guess much closer to the wedding date.) She was never told this when she was shopping for the dress. She is unsure about whether taking the dress home is a good idea or not. Have any of you done this already ? Shouldnt she have a choice in this matter ? When I picked up my dress (I got it at the Bridal Building) I was told by friends 'take it as late as possible incase something happens to it, it will be in their hands not yours'. I'm sure nothing will happen to it sitting in a closet (will any coloring change in a year ? I guess I should go look at my own dress!)

What do you ladies think ? Is this fair ?

Thanks for your feedback !

Anna

Re: DAVID's Brides - Question about 'TAKE HOME the DRESS' POLICY

Hi Anna! The same exact thing happened to me, except it was Estelle's, not David's. I am getting married in a few weeks and my dress came in over a year ago. Who knew? Hee hee. I kept it in a dry closet, totally sealed up in that zippered garment bag they give you. I even put tape around the top, where the hanger pokes through. My dress stayed absolutely perfect, no color changes at all! I'm sure her dress will be fine too!! Good luck!

melissa :)

Re: DAVID's Brides - Question about 'TAKE HOME the DRESS' POLICY

i went for my dress early too. well actually i went places just to look at i couldn't believe found my dream dress and at david's no less, i never even intended to look there!
anyway, my dress had to be made with extra length (i am 5'10') so they made me a brand new dress, this took a few months for it to come in. my dress was ready to be picked up in April, that was 1 year and 1 month untill my wedding. so the dress is in my moms house, in a closet all its own, wrapped in a white sheet, inside a garment bag, only i have read on the knot, and other places, and was told to leave the zipper on the garment bag open a little for air???? IS THIS TRUE? WHAT HAVE YOU OTHER LADIES DONE WHO HAVE YOUR DRESS IN ADVANCE??
the dress will be in the closet untill my first fitting in march, if thats when i am supposed to go......thank god i didn't buy a dress i was looking at in saymels, they went out of business now and i would have been out of $ and a dress!

Re: DAVID's Brides - Question about 'TAKE HOME the DRESS' POLICY

When I bought my dress from there, (off the rack) I was still surprised that they packed it up and wanted me to take it home right that minute! I thought it would stay there and be steamed, maybe until alterations. Nope. I guess they don't have room for storage. I would just pick it up, they have been known to lose dresses. Also, I would think twice before having it altered there. I am going somewhere else for that. I have heard everything from them messing up alterations to having dirty water in their steaming machine that dirties the dresses! My dress in is the dress bag, in a closet at my moms house. (she opens the plastic and lets it 'air out' every once in a while)...

Re: DAVID's Brides - Question about 'TAKE HOME the DRESS' POLICY

I bought my dress at the Vera Wang sample sale in April 2002 and I am getting married in September 2003. I was told to put my dress in a cloth garment bag. It came in a plastic garment bag but I was told that leaving the dress in the plastic bag may cause discoloration of the dress and may cause the dress to have a plastic smell. I ordered a cloth garment online b/c I could not find one for a wedding dress in the stores. I hope this helps.

Re: DAVID's Brides - Question about 'TAKE HOME the DRESS' POLICY

Hi, Did you get your dress at david's bridal too? Now what about alterations? are you having them done there as well? I have heard that they mess up the alterations...can you let me know if you have come across any problems being that you are getting married in a few weeks.
Please respond

Anna

I had my dress in my sister's closet for about 5 months or so because the original shop I bought it at closed in Bayside and relocated in Bethpage (and has now gone out of business altogether -- thank God it wasn't this year). Since my dress/the shop and the owner were MIA for several days, when I finally got in touch with the owner, I grabbed my dress and took it to my sister's in Jersey until my first fitting.

Now that I've babbled on, the moral to my story was that the dress was just fine, no discoloration, etc. I kept in a closet that's never used and in the original bag all zipped up. As a matter of fact, she put it in another white bag and then the outer bag since I was keeping it for so many months.

So tell your friend not to worry. Just leave it in a closet and take it out when it's time to go for the fitting!
