I'm totally crashing the boards here
but I read the original post and found much humor in it!

I'm a special education teacher (love my job ...)
My uncle always teases me that 'Its not a real world profession'

I live with him and I know he says it jokingly because he sees how hard I work. Although, he is a CEO, I have much flack to give him as well!

Tomorrow is my first day back and I am looking forward to it!

Good luck to all the teachers, and everyone else!!!

Just as leese said, I see it as a joke too! Maybe not only bc I know Denise's humor but coming from a family filled with teachers!

I joke all the time with my mom (5th grade special ed) that her summer is closing down & she needs to come back to reality & actually work! Trust me, I have the up most respect for all teachers especially my mom & SIL! I am so jealous of them come the end of June when they don't have to wake up anymore! If anything, I love when the teachers are not in work, NO TRAFFIC!!!

But all kidding aside, in my family's case, I think it is hysterical to watch my mom get back into a routine as she has spent the last 2 months on the beach at our summer house!

All to all the teachers out there!!! You guys are the reason our kids become as smart as they do! You have the MOST influence on them & I have the most respect for all of you! Now off to enjoy the rest of the summer

We have off two months and Im sorry ,but this post is annoying the c rap out of me because if I need to justify my job to ONE more person, Im going to scream.

I was thinking the exact same thing after reading that post. People who aren't teachers just don't understand what we do. That is what we need to keep telling outselves.

I am trurly sorry you have to go back to work after having off 3 months.....

___________________________________________________________

3 months - not quite.......try 2 months WITHOUT PAY ( I wouldn't call that vacation time, would you?) and considering I have spent the last 3 weeks working in my classroom to have it ready for the kids on Tuesday WITHOUT PAY, not to mention the hundereds of dollars I have spent,
comments like that are just not necessary.

I understand it was meant as a joke, but put yourself in our positions for a week during school and you will see why if teachers did not have summers off to regroup and have time away from the kids, how most of us would be institutionalized right about now.

I also don't think I am in the minority when I say that I worked this summer, as most teachers do.

Here is the COLD HARD reality. We get paid for 10 months of work. We dont get 12 month salaries. They simply take our salaries and spread them out over 12 months. Some teachers work two jobs to put money in the bank and some DO work during the summer as well. I am one of those teachers. I do what I have to do for myself and now with and for my husband and our future.

Personally, you will never hear me complain about making less than my corporate counterparts because I knew what I was getting into when I became an educator. Not all of us do it for summers off. We do it for the love of children.

Just remember, we are highly educated professionals (mandated by law) who are responsible for the immediate educational and social-emotional well-being of CHILDREN for up to if not more than 6 hours a day. I don't ask for more money. A little respect, however, would be appreciated. Thanks.

amen sister!

I was a teacher and I took no offense at all to it.
I knew it was intended to be a joke

I know that this should be done already, but what I always say to my sister or my non-teacher friends is that I chose my profession and so did they. End of story. They could have been teachers with summers off, but they are not. Oh well.

eta: I know the original poster meant no harm, and no insult was taken on my part. I just wanted to share what I say to non-teachers, usually in a joking manner.

you get great vacation, maternity leave, job security after tenure and fantastic benefits. If some of us are little jealous b/c you have summers off, then so be it.

although i agree that this thread needs to go, i had to respond to this. most public school teachers DO NOT get any maternity leave. we can use up sick days if we want to get paid, but we get zero days of paid maternity leave and lose our benefits after the 3 month FMLA.

i wish i had the summer off...i tutored and worked my butt off...planning lessons doesn't happen in a day

Provided they have been working at the school for at least 12 months and have worked 1250 hours in the past year, public school teachers get maternity leave under FMLA. They may not get paid during the leave, but they are entitled to take 12 weeks off. FMLA does not require any company to pay its employees during their maternity leave. If you work for a company with less than 50 employees, you're not protected under FMLA, and are not entitled to maternity leave.
