Dear Teachers........

Ladies,

Please let me put and end to this….as I stated above it was a joke. Obviously not a funny one. If I may for one second speak my peace….I did not say I did not have respect for teachers! That is the compete opposite I have the up most respect for teachers! I was merely making a joke that some people only have off 2 weeks, which have an enormous stressful job also…..that’s it. Again sorry if I offended anyone it was not my intent.

Here is the COLD HARD reality. We get paid for 10 months of work. We dont get 12 month salaries. They simply take our salaries and spread them out over 12 months. Some teachers work two jobs to put money in the bank and some DO work during the summer as well. I am one of those teachers. I do what I have to do for myself and now with and for my husband and our future.

Personally, you will never hear me complain about making less than my corporate counterparts because I knew what I was getting into when I became an educator. Not all of us do it for summers off. We do it for the love of children.

Just remember, we are highly educated professionals (mandated by law) who are responsible for the immediate educational and social-emotional well-being of CHILDREN for up to if not more than 6 hours a day. I don't ask for more money. A little respect, however, would be appreciated. Thanks.

well put. To just add one more thing, we also spend many hours at home after work, on the weekends and over holiday breaks doing work...so like I tell my friends, my job does not end when I leave work, most of their work days end when they leave.

Everyone will be sorry when we can't go on LIWeddings all day and respond to posts (which is one thing I will miss most about the summer!), sitting is not in the job description unfortunately!

Don't worry.. i think we all got a little crazy... i am sure it's because everyone is dreading next week and is on edge!!!!!!!!!!

I think if the original poster edited her original post to say that people need to read the whole thread before forming an opinion it would die a whole lot easier

ETA: don't forget about the day my husband had to go to the mall and buy one of his students (A 7 year old little girl) a belt because her parents weren't there to dress her in the morning, she did it herself and put herfelf on the MTA bus!!!!

teachers have very hard, thankless, low paying jobs.

but those summers off ARE nice, you guys have to admit it!

I work very hard too - but its a different kind of stress.

I applaud all teachers



but I do wish I had summers (heck, I wish I had HOLIDAYS) off!!!

I know teachers work hard. I have tons of them in my family. I know they do it for LOW pay b/c most of them work for govts, as do I.

I work for the Fed...I bust my butt every day like MOST people do when they work. I get a set amount of days off, like most people do... I don't make a ton of $$, and I don't even get MATERNITY leave

since there are a lot of teachers on the boards, there are a lot of posts about them...more so than any other proffession.

I understand that it may be a sensitive subject, but I think you can all say that Denise isn't a meanie, and probably would not intentionally offend any of you. It kinda seems like she hit a nerve, but I don't think she deserves all of this...JMHO.

so for all of us that work hard, the first round is on me!

Because I am not a teacher, I completely agreee with Jess here.

If I may also add, I work in corp america and make pretty good $$. I have been with the same company for 7 years. My friend, a teacher, has been at her school 7 years and we make the same salary. Teachers, social workers, etc should be paid good $$ b/c of the responsibility they hold, but please don't crack out the violins as if all teachers are severely underpaid - you get great vacation, maternity leave, job security after tenure and fantastic benefits. If some of us are little jealous b/c you have summers off, then so be it.

Denise... I saw it as a joke - well, probably cause I have met ya (the hazards of the Internet).

Just like Jess, I'm a govt worker and get all the jokes too... she didn't mean anything by it... but i know all the girls who cared know that now. just had to add denise is a funny and nice person.

although i agree that this thread needs to go, i had to respond to this. most public school teachers DO NOT get any maternity leave. we can use up sick days if we want to get paid, but we get zero days of paid maternity leave and lose our benefits after the 3 month FMLA.



i wish i had the summer off...i tutored and worked my butt off...planning lessons doesn't happen in a day

Youre totally right in that being a teacher has GREAT benefits and I do recognize that. I also recognize the fact that in order to make the money I think I deserve I have to go to school for the rest of my frekking life LOL. Which is what I do during my summers off btw.

No seriously, the job is tough, but has great perks. I dont think anyone was beeotching about money more that we are just sick of getting ragged on all the time and not getting respect. I cant even tell you the stupid cr ap that has been said to me this week by my FRIENDS!!!! UGH.

i must speak my piece especially since FH is a teacher, who worked all summer at a beer delivery company and busted his ***...who also coaches 3 sports teams year round, AND teaches nite classes at business school...
my job is stressful too, you all picked your profession..not all of us have a 2 month luxury, and then every single month with a few days off for holidays besides MARCH..that kills me, all teachers hate march...lol..
yes you do an amazing job..yes some of u are underpaid..
but get real, im underpaid i work just as hard, and i get 3 weeks a year sick and vacation time...
it isnt jealousy really, the poor girl was just joking, and people obviously have to somewhat agree with what she said, or they wouldnt have freaked out...
no one said they didnt respect you...they said it was nice to have such a long time off...

as a teacher i am not offended, although at first i did a double take, many good points were already stated about why our job is not a bed of roses as most non-teachers think it is,its just a rough time of year for us because we do hear so many snide comments about how people feel so bad for us going back after 2 months off, even though most of us worked those 2 months, your comment just may have been the one that broke the camel's back, so to speak.
So don't worry you said it was a joke and apologized for offending anyone no need to say anything else

although i don't think any of us somewhat agree with what she said, we're just tired of hearing it and having to defend or justify it to other people
