Death of Bridezilla?

Death of Bridezilla?

This is totally random--but I was watching the Today Show this morning--and they were talking about the 'Bridezilla' wave that started about 12 years ago or so, and how it has spawned books and the tv show. But they were saying that contrary to the television show (which if you view the WE boards you find that a LOT of the stuff on there is staged), that the typical 'bridezilla' is on its way out.

They say this since so many brides are a little older & more mature (average age is 27 now), and they have been in weddings before and are more likely to focus on friends and family then the 'me, me, me' bridezilla syndrome. For example -- telling BMs to pick whatever dress they feel comfortable in, footing the bill for certain WR things like a the shower/bach party, not caring about the show color/type, etc.

What do you ladies think? In your experiences, do you think the 'bridezilla' is still alive and kicking or is it just being perpetuated by tv & books?

I'm sure there are still some real life bridezillas out there, but I really haven't encountered any personally.

I think it IS perpetuated more on tv and in books than it actually occurs in real life. But hey, that's jmo.

I always thought it was prepetuated by books and TV. Personally, I hate the term. I feel like if a bride asserts herself in any way, people attach that term to her. It's like PMS....and when you're cranky for whatever reason and a guy says 'Must be PMS.' Ugh, kills me!!
There was actually an article in the last Modern Brides (MB or just Brides can't remember) about the death of the term. It was really interesting.
I'd like the term to go away....I think MB came up with a new term, I just don't remember it.

ETA: Some of the brides on the show bridezillas are totally insane, but as Mrs. Q said, I haven't encountered any real-life brides like that.

Ha ha I know one in particular... wowies !!!! I am sure they still exist.
From the show they seem to be mostly unorganized girls that get way too stressed out. They need to chill out...

yeah the editor of MB was there this morning talking on the show about it and mentioned the article in it.

i also think its just something that gets good ratings. i'm pretty darn sure i was not a BZ, i just wanted to make a wedding that i would be proud of and that my friends & family would have a great time!

Yeah it's totally perpetuated by the media....and for the show, I'm certain the girls amp it up for the camera.

But what I find funny is, wasn't Godzilla a NICE monster? That's why Hideki Matsui was nicknamed Godzilla- he's a 'monster' at the plate, but a really nice guy and everyone loves him!

Yes, she had to bring baseball into the discussion.

Based upon the boards here at LIW, I think that the whole Bridezilla thing is on the outs. More of the TV shows about weddings are focusing on the positive, StyleTV's 'Whose Wedding Is it Anyway', 'Platinum Weddings', TLC's 'A Wedding Story'.
As you said, most of us are more mature and not as self centered as the brides being portrayed on 'Bridezilla'. It is not reality TV, but a fantasy creation.

Personally, I'm 40 years old and learned a long time ago not to sweat the small stuff. I've gone thru a lot of challenges and hard times in my life, and honestly, do not have the patience to obsess over minute details.
Life it way too short, and with the very busy lives we all lead, we need to take time out and enjoy it.

I am looking for our wedding to be a party, to be a celebration of our life.
Our marriage is between Michael and myself, and will not be determined by how much we spend or how many people are invited, or if we have a seafood boat at the reception. A marriage is about us coming together as one, to live our lives together, to share in the joys and in the sadness.

Yes--I agree. The idea of bridezilla is perpetuated by tv and books because it's a great seller.

I have never encountered a Bridezilla before, but I'm sure there are genuine ones out there. I'm just finding in general that is a bride is organized and on top of things and asserts herself, people are quick to call her a bridezilla, which is usually not the case.

My friend lived on in LA for a while and worked at Mens Warehouse. He was actually on an episode of Bridezillas, helping the Groom with the tux and with the bride picking out clothes for the Groom for the HM. He said that its all fake. She was soo sweet when the cameras are not rolling. My friend had made a joke to the bride and she joked back, but the cameras weren't rolling, so they asked if they can do it again

ITA!!! i hate it when my mom and MOH (sister) say that to me, even when they are just kidding... i feel like, i am trying to be such a good bride, because of all the stereotypes being perpetuated by magazines and TV, and it has gotten so bad i am afraid to assert myself sometimes!!

IMO, I think EVERY bride has their 'Bridezilla' moment at some point. I know i have!! And I am THE most laid back person....it takes a lot to push my buttons.

I think there are some true zillas out there still - but I think a lot of brides have realized you just need to relax and go with the flow sometimes!
