So I am late in joining this conversation but: Last nights debate I hated the town hall format. There was a couple of points where it seemed like a boxing match was going to happen. I LOVEEEEEEEEEDDD The moderator. My favorite part was at the end when the moderator asked them both to move
I am still voting more then ever for the candidate that I was planning to.
Oh yeah and the VP debate kept me a little more interested.

There was mudslinging on both their parts, they didn't really say much of any substance or prove that their plan on any of the issues was the best, both haven't clearly come out an laid out a full plan on anything they've 'proposed' and honestly they just said the same things over and over again.
The VP debate was much better and I hope this next debate between those two really goes somewhere.

Re: Debate!!!
i came home after my crochet class all geared up to watch since i am so into it BUT i put it on and COULD NOT STAND that format. That was not a debate, they wouldn't allow you to argue back and so when the next question was given they refused to answer it completely but instead chose to go back and argue the previous question. I actually shut it off, i feel so bad doing it but I couldn't deal with it.
Unfort. I realize I now have to rely on a news brief on it which stinks.

Espo, I'm glad you're still here.
I too was disappointed in the answers given in the first debate regarding what plans will have to be cut in response to the financial crisis and bailout. I did feel, however, that because the situation was so dynamic, at the time, that the question was premature.
Now, cut to the VP debate. Both candidates got the same question. You tell me which campaign was prepared:
Biden: We'll slow down on doubling foreign assistance, we'll make sure we don't go forward with McCain's tax cut proposals, the existing one for over $250k, which is $130 billion this year alone, we won't support the $300 billion tax cut for corporate America or the very wealthy, we're not going to support another $4 billion for Exxon Mobil. We can't afford to hold up on providing incentives for new jobs. We can't slow up on education, because that's the engine of growth and competitiveness, and we can't afford to slow up on healthcare. Bottom line: We'll eliminate wasteful spending (my light is blinking), like the $100 billion tax dodge that's unpatriotic.
Palin: McCain doesn't tell one thing to one group and another thing to another. I want to go back to the energy plan. In that plan that Obama supported, that's how the companies got the tax breaks. As Gov, I told them no, it wasn't going to happen in my state. Bless their hearts, they're doing what they had to do, but I had to break up a monopoly and say the people are going to come first....Obama gave them tax breaks I had to undo as governor to benefit the people.
Gwen Ifill: So there's nothing you'd take off the table as a result of the financial crisis?
Palin: There is not, and how long have I been at this, like [wink], 5 weeks? So there hasn't been a whole lot that I've promised except to do what is right for the American people, put govt back on the side of the people, stop the greed and corruption on wall street, and the rescue plan has to have that massive oversight that Americans expect and deserve and I dont' think John McCain has made any promise that he would not be able to keep either.
(Biden laughs) Biden: He voted for the bill because it had real support for alternative energy, when there were separate votes on the tax breaks, Obama voted against them and McCain voted for them.
---------- It strongly seemed to me that the Obama camp, in the intervening time, prioritized their spending and put foreign aid further down the list. The McCain camp? Why, we'd never even consider breaking campaign promises we've not had time to make! Heaven forfend!

I missed the VP debate, Dh and I weren't home. I am not a fan of Palin, hearing that woman speak makes me want to bang my head although its weird because Ive heard alot of ppl saying she actually did well. But then again, I think even if she did just ok thats a huge improvement for her so don't think thats saying much.
Again, i am criticizing both candidates not just Obama, i think for some reason people think I am against Obama and for Mccain but i have showed how BOTH candidates have been wrong. I am being unbiased at the moment, just to show how both are annoying me. I think i just need to point this out because everybody is defending obama to me and trying to show me what Mccain does wrong but i never said I'm a Mccain supporter, the same way i haven't said im an obama supporter.

The polls pretty much reflected how I felt about the VP debates --- both candidates did better than expected, and Biden 'won' the debate. Everyone had very very very low expectations for Palin, so the fact that she was better than the Katie Couric interviews made it a 'success' when in reality she didn't answer the questions she didnt have rehearsed, she spent too much time on gimmics (joe sixpack, hockey moms, winking, shoutouts, etc). I don't think she did well, but she did better than I expected.
However, I dont think the debates affect decided voters at all. I think in most cases you think your candidate won, whichever side you're on. That's what SNL said... 'and the winner of the debate was.... whoever you had been planning to vote for' and I think it's true.
I do like watching on CNNHD because they have commentators scoring the candidates, and it's interesting to see what other people think because I know I'm probably watching with a biased perspective

No no, I get that you're dissatisfied with both generally, I was just afraid that since you mentioned that specific question a million years ago on page 1 of this thread, by the time I finished reading through page 3, you'd be gone. I really wanted to address your point since I noticed the same issues with how they handled the question in the first debate, and I was waiting for some sign that either campaign was getting on the ball and constructing some kind of reasonable answer. It just felt like it took forever to read all this!
ITA that the bar was set pretty low for her - she didn't drool, break out the bubbly!

For both past debates I was watching while being in a chatroom and I feel that was a great way to do it really because of what you said. having a discussion of the debate with people from both parties really made me look at my candidate a little more objectively and also made me realize that a response that I thought was utterly unbelieable someone from the opposing party thought that it was great.
I am not sure if anyone saw UPN last night after the debate but they interviewed some people (college students) who were undecided and were a part of a focus group of some sort and their answers were very surprising showing how different people took different things from this debate.

I think it's really nice to mention how we have one more debate. But I feel like after tonight's debate, how can anyone vote for this man(McCain)?
I just do not understand everyone's confusion?!
Is is just me?
well to be honest, i dont think anybody can say 'how can somebody vote for so and so candidate' everybody is different and even if somebody disagrees with me, i never have told somebody how can they think differently than me, how can they vote differently than me. This is why we have the right to vote, to vote for whom we want to not be told who should run the country. I respect everyones side even if it is different than me. I think one thing that always has bothered me is when somebody told me i was wrong for whom i wanted to vote for, there is no such thing as that i personally feel, the same way you wouldn't want to be told that who you are voting for is wrong. I just never could sit here and tell people that i am right, my opinion is better and everybody else is wrong and how can people not think like me

LOL thats exactly how i felt about people saying Palin did well. Just because she did better than her interviews doesn't mean she did good. Its like an F student who gets a C, doesnt mean you did great but yes you did improve and ppl will congratulate you on improving.
THANK YOU!!!! that is exactly what i think. WHomever your candidate is, thats who you think won. You see it on the news, you see it on here too, the obama supporters will say he won, mccain supporters will say he won. But lets be honest, neither blew the other one away. They each had pros and cons, and for each good thing you can mention about a candidate theres also a bad thing that can be mentioned to that was said in the debates. When the one you support makes a good point you cheer for that but when the other candidate talks you're already waiting to hear his response in a negative way and any little thing you can criticize them for then you will and sometimes overlooking the pros in the other candidate. I think its safe to say we've all done it at some time and point in our lives. The candidate i felt very strongly about is out of the race, so bc of that i am looking at from an unbiased view to really see who i think would actually do some good, since i dont strongly favor one over the other i see the bad and good in each. I am sure if i felt strongly about one of them then i'd be sitting here debating for that candidate and making sure to bring up only the good parts
I have to see what Lou Dobbs thinks haha. He criticizes everybody, the democrats the republicans, he will throw them all under the table and tell it like it is

i saw them interviewing the college students after. It is interesting but the truth is that we all are different and have different things we look for in a candidate. The truth is, there will never be a candidate that will help every single citizen in our country, whether its the elderly, college students, single mothers, rich, middle-class, poor. Someone gets screwed while others benefit. So what most ppl do is that they have certain issues they feel strongly about and care about just those issues, which is the only thing you can do. Some are more concerned about healthcare, others are concerned with education, immigration, foreign policy, it depends on whatever is closest to your heart and will effect you. Small business owners are going to be concerned with what will be done for them and they will be effected, their concern isnt with big business, and those in the financial business working for big corporations are going to be concerned with big businesses. It doesnt make them wrong for what they care about, its only normal to feel that way.
Same on LIW, how can anybody tell somebody they are wrong for how they feel you have your own concerns while others have theirs. People work in different industries, have different finances, different healthcare concerns, so how would everybody feel the same

Ok..I know I keep posting but seriously.......
the mortgage crisis......so McCain......what about those of us who bought a home, and did not foreclose on it? ANYONE?????
i hate to say this but i dont think either of them will help with this. In the first debate they had a few weeks ago NEITHER of them were able to answer this. It was so frustrating and everyone agreed that neither obama or mccain were able to actually answer the question and explain a plan they had to help our economy right now. ALl they talked about was how bad it is, yeah thanks we know this but how about at least one of you answer this question bc its pretty scary that neither can. When they were asked what programs will have to get cut in order to put this bail out plan through, again neither answered. They answered what wouldnt get cut which was just avoiding the question. Its bs what they say and i dont believe either one. How the heck are they going to do what they say when we are going to get taxed for the 700 billion pay out plan, and on top of that the bail out plan failed and our tax dollars just went down the drain for all this bs, so our economy is about to get worse. If they cut taxes, cut health care and all these other things, where is money coming in its just what the people want to hear but when we really think about it, its not even possible. At least be up front and honest with us
Obama was clear on his plan to help the defecit which in turn will help the economy...I wrote about this in a previous post.
Obviously there is more to it than that but it is a detailed plan that calls for a change in the tax relief and breaks that oil companies, lobbyists and CEO's benefit from...BILLIONS...that will be put into our economy.
McCain clearly stated 'now is not the time for a tax increase' ummmm..... no one gets one? then how are we paying the defecit??? Obama does plan on raising taxes for those who make over $250,000...this will also help with the defecit and the economy.
He has plans, clear plans that sound like they are worth giving a shot...I mean McCain has nothing, nada, just attacks on Obama and the same broken record accusations that really don't allow me to see how he plans to help us.
but so many candidates can talk about what will be done but then once they are in office they end up doing differently, thats my point. They will BS their way through the election to say what the public wants to hear. Time and time again a candidate has promised us many things and time and time again they didnt follow through with what they said during the election. I mean can anyone honestly say they believe everything a politician says lol
He will only tax those who make over $250k, ok well it will be great trying to get money out of all the CEO's whose companies either went bankrupt or are in financial trouble. And not only is there a 700 billion bail out plan we have to pay for but before this we already were in alot of trouble, it will take more than taxing JUST the rich. The rich are only a very small percentage of our country, the majority are middle class and i dont see how we wont also have to pay for this. I just dont believe it, until i actually see it happening. We all know candidates BS and its the truth
I could not agree with this more. I feel like both candidates proposals wont work and Im not exactly pleased with either one of them. At this point its having to chose the lesser of the two evils. BUT I also feel like what Obama is proposing is what the people want to hear and while it sounds better and is more comforting its not realistic. How could anyone possibly lower taxes at a time like this????

I think Obama did well last night, but I don't think McCain did that badly. I was interested to see that all of the commentators (even Republicans) on CNN thought Obama came out ahead by a lot or by a slight margin, but they made excuses about the economy and how the incumbent party rarely wins re-election if the economy is doing poorly. I thought last night was a little more of a draw...
However, I 100% believe that Biden won the VP debate -- I want to bang my head against the wall when I hear people saying Palin won, but what can you do?
In the end, I dont think either candidate will accomplish everything they promise, so you have to go with the one whose values are most aligned with your own and hope for the best. It will be a long road, but hopefully things get better. I wouldn't want to be President, and I hope whoever wins is actually up for the challenge.

i too agree with you...I am a McCain supporter as well and for my own reasons which according to previous posters may be wrong because they don't know how anyone can vote for McCain. But whatever haha
I agree neither or them really impressed me. I don't really like Obama all that much anyway, the way he speaks, presents himself I don't know just something about him. But that is definitely not the only reasons I am not voting for him.
But I feel there was a lot of mudsliding going on and I agree with Denise also, I don't know how they can say any one specific person 'won' that debate. VP debates= much more interesting.

Re: Debate!!!
He's lowering taxes on people who aren't going to be paying much in taxes anyway because they aren't making as much money to be taxed. Although it is a lot of people, it isn't a big chunk of the tax pie, so to speak. Closing tax loopholes for offshore corps and eliminating GOP tax breaks are where your heavy hitters are, tax-wise.
Consider: I grossed $45k last year, and netted $30k. I paid $1700 in taxes. This year, I gross $30k, and have the same business deductions, because I still have to pay for subscriptions, and professional fees, and they've stayed the same. Now my gross is $15k. My tax bracket bottoms out. Lower my tax rate if you want to, but I'm probably not even paying as much as I got back in the stimulus package to begin with. What's the damage to the tax revenue in terms of my bill? A few hundred?
