I think you could easily do it if you have a small intimate wedding with a small amount of guests.
I'm paying for the wedding myself too, we just made sure we wouldn't owe anything after and we could bank all the gifts. Otherwise we wouldn't be doing anything so elaborate.

Re: Cheaper weddings
I am having a budget wedding and here are some of the things that I have done to keep costs down.
We are getting married in the winter. Hall prices are significantly cheaper.
DIY invites from Michaels
We are having a friend take photos
No fancy limos, just the most basic.
we have also asked family members to contribute instead of giving a gift. ie My mom is paying for the favors.

Re: Cheaper weddings
Are you second guessing your decision again?
I think if you really want to get married this year, you may be able to get a good deal on dates that have not been filled/or have been canceled. They would rather not see the dates go to waste so will offer an encentive to book by giving you a great deal.
That being said, you would really have to scramble to book all the other vendors and may not have your first choice. I don't know if this stress outweighs the stress of waiting and saving for 2011.
I think if you cut the guest list, do alot of DIY and compromise on the place/time of year, you can have a great wedding for thousands less.
At the end of the day, a wedding is a party; no one requires you to even have one as a prerequisite for a fabulous marriage.

Re: Cheaper weddings
There are a lot of Country Clubs that do Package Wedding deals they include everything for around $10,000-15,000. However most of them pick your photographer, DJ, Florist and so on.. you might not be happy with the job they do... My cousin did it and she said she wished she did it differently.. her wedding was beautiful but she admitted that she wasnt happy with most of it especially the DJ they gave her.. he did not play any songs she asked him to and also introduced them as the wrong last name

if you don't mind going to Queens, try Villa Russo's their prices, no one can beat and you can totally pull off a $15K wedding. also, try those halls that give you package deals, like flowers, dj, hall, stuff like that, all included! There is a place like that in Brooklyn and my friend got married there last May and everything came out to under 15K even! Its called Genaro's

Re: Cheaper weddings
A friend of mine got married last October and she had a great wedding for around $13,000 I think. They really wanted to buy a house after the wedding and they stuck to their budget to a T. And to be honest, if I hadn't known beforehand what they were spending....I would have never guessed it was so inexpensive. It was really nicely done! Their receptionw as at Lombardi's on the Bay, they had fairly inexpensive invites, they had less than 100 guests, and their flowers were done at Stop & Shop. There are always ways to cut. Try to keep to a budget with your DJ and Photo and that will help...and just do a ton of DIY projects for the little stuff. Ask your BM's and family to help too....I'm sure they would love to!

Re: Cheaper weddings
I think it's possible; with all the tips other ladies have suggested.
FH & I are paying for everything on our own; i'm trying so hard just to get my Mom to help with the smallest of expenses-getting her to try to help me with my dress is the HUGEST ordeal!!
Anyway...keeping the guest list small...our minimum is only 100 people; and we're doing it early November so we got a great rate; and (fingers crossed) will hopefully still have good weather.
I will DIY invites (attempt to); cutting out non essential things (using menu; place cards; direction cards provided by the hall). no bathroom basket; no slippers; might not even do a program. Hopefully find a good DJ under $1K good photographer at a great price and still on the fence about Limos.
And as far as flowers; i'm not too concerned about this yet; my sister had a very budget wedding 3 years ago and used a local florist in queens that i might go to as well to save some $$.
