Diabetes and pregnancy

Diabetes and pregnancy

I wanted to see if anytone had any information on this. I have never before been told that I am diabetic, but from the blood work that the RE pulled, ny numbers are coming up that I can be. We are checking some other recent numbers just in case this was a bad read, but just in case it isn't I wanted to see if anyone had any information. The RE seems to think it does not have to be a major problem, and that I may have to take insulin through an entire pg (if we ever get pg), and not just during the third trimester as with gestational diabetes. Any information would be great.
Thanks

Re: Diabetes and pregnancy

Stacey's right, I got GD in week 31 and started on insulin in week 33. The dr told me that I probably got it because it runs in my family (my father has it) and that I would definitely get it with the next pregnancy from the beginning, and would be on insulin earlier as well. I was sent to a diabetic nurse and given a diet and had to check my blood 6 times a day and insulin only once, at night.

And my daughter was born perfectly healthy, so I was very happy about that.

As long as it's detected early, you watch what you eat (the carbs) and follow what they say, it's fine. Because it ran in my family, I was sent for a glucose test at 9 weeks and then again at 24 weeks (the usual time to be tested). Feel free to FM me.

Good luck!!!

Thank you so much for your replies

If you don't mind me asking, what type of diet did they reccomend. I figured I would start to try to watch now since we should be doing the IVF cycle soon. I have an appt with the dr on Monday, but I guess it's never too early to start.

Re: Diabetes and pregnancy

It was a diabetic diet that they gave me. The funny thing was I was not only the youngest one at these sessions, but the only preggo one, so whatever they told everyone to eat, they had to modify for me!

Watch the carbs -- nothing more then 2 servings at a time, which is 30 total carbs. You also need to eat protein, veggies (unlimited), fruit -- but not too much because then the sugar/carbs goes overboard.

Ask the dr when you go and I'm sure they'll give you a whole listing of what you can and can't eat.
