Did anyone just see on the news the little girl that was....

Original post by june262004

Handcuffed? I think it happenedin Florida. She was having a tantrum so bad that all the other students had to leave the room. Then she started climbing the walls kicking and screaming and punching the teacher. She was sent to the princaples office where she continued. She climbed on a chair and then on top of a table. She was on the floor kicking. They called the police and they came and said we are going to handcuff you. And they did.

Ok Im not a mom but I don't see why this was so Horrible maybe a little extreme but it probably taught her a lesson. Her parents are going to sue (of course)

Wheres Deb was this in the armpit?

i would have the school call the parents and have them deal with the problem.....if the child had a sibling in the school that might work also......but i would still not handcuff a 5 year old......i just dont understand why all of you dont see the problem with that........

the mother couldn't come to the station i doubt she could come to the school
and is the mother supposed to go to school with ehr child everyday????

NOT A GOOD RESPONSE!

well jonn...holding her down, having her mother attend school with her everyday to ensure she acts NORMAL...isn't an answer either...
so before peopel criticize they should really think about the alternatives that the state of florida deems appropriate ...because i will tellya..they aren't goign to say ok to having their teachers hold them down and then be subjected to lawsuits!

IF this mother sues...MOST LIKELY SUE THE POLICE,,,adn WILL LOSE!
The school is safe this way and i agree!

AGAIN...it is SOOO EASY TO CRITICIZE

not really...i brought up valid arguments and realities of the situation and most people who know or have had any education in the field...are aware of these things that someone LIKE YOU wouldn't

YOU on the other hand felt righteous...HAD NO POINT and NO REAL ALTERNATIVES TO OFFER

so ...well... that is pretty easy to criticize...

again....knowledge is a powerful tool!
soo easy to criticize when you don't see the BIGGER picture!

you would not believe what happens in classrooms sometimes. i'm in a good school and the police were there two weeks ago. yes, you have to handle them with tlc, but some are outright dangerous!!!

not call the police.........and have you ever been scared of a 5 year old.........

Honestly? YES!

I work in a PSYCHIATRIC school and day treatment center as a teacher and I see these behaviors and MUCH WORSE on a daily basis with kids aged 5-21 years old. Many of our staff members ranging from paraprofessionals to teachers to psychiatrists are trained in various techniques to help students in non-violent crisis intervention. There are occasions, however when the need for a LEGAL wrap or restraint is necessary.

I, for one, am NOT trained to restrain. I do not want to be responsible if the child were to twist and thus hurt themselves. I am sorry but there is not a child that I would risk my years of education, work or license for if their parents saw an opportunity for a lawsuit. And trust me, they do. A kid falls down in the play ground and chips his tooth and the school is in court - yes there was supervision - kids are kids.

After reviewing the video just now, I saw behaviors in this little girl that are typical of the population of children my facility serves. They can be dangerous to themselves, other children, as well as faculty members.

I applaud the teachers and the assistant principal for their use of non-violent techniques. They gave the child her own personal space - they did NOT crowd her. The spoke to her at her level. They allowed her to release her aggression. This child is CLEARLY disturbed. I am sure this is not the first time this child behaved that way in a school or play setting. Unfortunately, the child was not able to be calmed down and the administration had no choice but to involve police. I see this happen all the time.

It comes to pass that the child looks seemingly normal and calm when they get there. Disturbed kids 'turn it on and off' when they feel threatened. If the police took this child in their vehicle and she wasn't properly restrained, she could have posed a threat to her own safety (insert lawsuit # 2 for mommy and daddy) should she thrash herself or to the safety of the officers who were driving.

Had she been in NYC, I venture to say she would be in a more restrictive setting that could address her social-emotional and behavioral needs. Perhaps a smaller kindergarten class would have been better with a special-ed teacher. Florida is known for having a poor special education system. The NYC BOE has its own district that serves kids with special needs and their families. Though it may not be ideal, it is better than most.

Edited for spelling

Everyone out there thinks that this was ok besides maiahsdad? Just wondering if anyone else stood on the other side of the fence?
