It made me sick.If she has a problem with living in this country, she should go live in another country and see if she has it that easy there!

I thought that story was about the fact that the pledge of allegiance wording involved the reference to God and the girl didn't believe in it... Perhaps I am confusing things.

It has nothing to do with God, it has to do with the fact that she feels this country has repressed her and her family(I think she is mulato.) She says she doesn't believe in anything the flag stands for.... I think it's BS and that she should get the Fu** out of the USA if she thinks it's that bad!

can one of you girls post a link to the news story on this?
Re: Did anyone see that girl in some school who turned her back and refused to do the pledge of allegiance?
I understand the if you don't like it...get out mentality...but I don't think it is that simple...[disclaimer...I have not read the article...so this is only my speculation]
1. if she and her family has been repressed...they possibly don't have the means to leave
2. Isn't it wonderful that we can express our dislike of the government without being jailed or tortured or executed? (I hope the Iraqis will be able to experience that)

The girl's name is Toni Smith. She is a basketball player at Manhattanville College, in Purchase, NY (my brother and sIL's alma mater).
Her reasoning is:
'the government's priorities are not on bettering the quality of life for all its people, but rather on expanding its own power.'

throw her little a$$ out of the country!!!!!!

That's not the story that I was referring too... Mine was about someone not reciting the pledge during the school recital, totally not related to basketball game, but this is a similar case.
Thank you.

I won't say that I necessarily agree with this woman, but why should she leave the country for practicing her first amendment right and expressing her opinion? She said nothing about America, she criticized the government. Practically every movie star in Hollywood has done that in the past few months (and these are individuals who are living it up here), yet we still watch their movies and support their projects.
Should we be told to leave New York everytime we complain about the conditions of the schools and how noone does anything about them, or when we're pissed off that our mayor raises the prices of subway tokens and tolls?
Just edited to say that I was referring to the basketball case.

I agree with you, dkga1026. This country is about your freedom of speech and being able to express your views on goverment policies without being prosecuted.

I feel that if she isn't happy to be in this country, she should go somewhere else! I bet she would change her tune real fast.

Yeah, I'm not real happy with Jeanene Garofalo and SUsan Sarandon these days. Well, Sarandon has always been a flaming liberal anyway. It never fails to astonish me the amount of nonsense they spout.
Seems the only conservatives in Hollywood who are out and proud are Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson....

Received this by email today...
It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God. Therefore I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a mess about having 'In God We Trust' on our money and having God in the Pledge of Allegiance. Why don't we just tell the 14% to shut up and sit down????
Re: Did anyone see that girl in some school who turned her back and refused to do the pledge of allegiance?
God can be anything you want it to be...................
The Pledge of Allgiance is recited to show Patriotism

I agree Wacky ... I don't know, maybe it's me, but I just don't understand it, but I guess it's because I believe in God and this country! Perhaps my opinion would be different if I didn't believe in one of the two.

I respect everyone's right to nonviolent protest of whatever they feel like protesting. At least the two girls that were mentioned in this post are not standing in the middle of a busy intersection holding a sign or screaming at people (a la abortion protestors).
When patriotism begins to border on fanaticism, ie. pulling a man out of his car, destroying the vehicle and beating on the driver - then I have a problem with patriotism. The same rights that protect the majority protect the minority. I think the protestors have the right to say 'I disagree with my government' without being declared un-American.
That is what separates us from Iraq. Praise God we never forget, or take for granted, that difference.

you don't mention if you agree with this statement or not...but I am personally appalled at this statement...
Why don't we tell the African-Americans and Hispanics who are only 12-14 % of the population to shut up and sit down? I can go on and on about the minorities in this nation...and remember that the Protestants that came to the 'new world' in the 1600's...were minorities themselves...and were trying to resist religious perecution...
this kind of mentality is very similar to the fascist dictators of the 1930's...

I was pretty shocked at that statement myself. That kind of thinking is exactly what being American is NOT about.

I personally don't care who believes in God or not. That is there preference.I do however have a problem with someone who says they don't like the country in which they live in.Don't like it,LEAVE! I doubt that girl would be happier anywhere else.

Re: Did anyone see that girl in some school who turned her back and refused to do the pledge of allegiance?
So many of these 'Don't like it, LEAVE!' comments seem un-american to me. America has never been a perfect country, but at least it continues to improve because of the voices of complaining citizens who insist on working to make it a better place. Should the civil rights protesters have left the US when they thought segregation was wrong? Personally, I'm very glad that they stuck around to fight and to change the country. Sure some people have fought for issues that I don't agree with, but boy am I glad that they are able to do so.
