Did anyone see that girl in some school who turned her back and refused to do the pledge of allegiance?

Original post by NovemberSue

It made me sick.If she has a problem with living in this country, she should go live in another country and see if she has it that easy there!

there are things you can do to CHANGE the parts of the country that you don't like...

Look at Henry David Thoreau...he wasn't happy...didn't pay his taxes...and it led to the end of slavery...

I'm sure that MLK Jr. was not happy with many parts of the government and he practiced many forms of civil disobedience...and it led to the Civil Rights Act

the same with Gandhi...

they were unhappy, they did something that was not violent and things changed

The girl doesn't like the country so why is she here?
That is my point! I'm sure the same girl who is complaining about this country would have no problem accepting an unemployment check if she lost her job!

I think that if you don't like the US then you should leave, but I am personnally offended that since I am an atheist that I should be told to shut up, because I am only in the 14%.

If there is supposed to be a seperation of church and state, then why is god in our pledge of allegience?

I believe in our government, and realize how lucky i am that I was born here and am able to live the life I lead, but I should not be told to sit down and shut up!!!!!

I also feel it is ridicioulus to be forced into saying the pledge of allegiance if you are opposed to the wording of the pledge, as i was while in school.

Also as yabbobay stated ina prior post, one nation under god was not even added into the pledge until the 1950's when the USA was worried about communism.

THs Constitution states there shall be a seperation fo church and state, and in the pledge of allegiaence this is not being followed.

As many others commented above, the comment about 'if you don't like it here, leave' doesn't make a lot of sense. The girl is standing up for whatever she believes in and america is one of few countries where everyone has such a choice. Are you so completely happy with this country in everything possible? I am sure that some things that are done in the US you don't agree with, but yet you haven't left the US, right?

Also, think of the practicality of your statement. Its not like any person can just pick themselves up and go to another country. It is not easy to do so even if one desires. As an example, I would love to move to Europe someday, yet finding a suitable job there for me is difficult, getting employment permits is next to impossible, and never mind any cultural issues that one will need to deal with when moving to another country.

alina, This girl to me has issues. My comment makes plenty of sense. I think people just want attention these days and will do anything to get it.She doesn't realize how much more difficult things are in some other countries and take many things for granted.
There are plenty of things that me & you may not know about or understand that the government does but that is why we are not in politics!
So I stand by my opinion as you stand by yours,If she doesn't like it here, then she should go somewhere else!

When this girl was asked why she was against saying the Pledge of Allegiance, she didn't have anything to say.
Seems like if she was so concerned about something, she would speak up,no?

IMHO and with all due respect how does anyone have the right to tell another person to leave the country. That is blind patriotism - no country is perfect and as citizens of America we have every right to voice what we don't like and stand up for what we believe in. Otherwise, we would still be living with slavery and no women's rights. These were both social issues which the majority thought were acceptable at one time.

She isn't trying to make a stand for anything.
She is silent. She probably doesn't know what to say because she has no VALID reason for turning her back on the flag. (DUH)
I think someone just wants attention!
You think anything will change from her silence?
Hmmm, I don't.
Slavery and women's rights are totally different issues.

Re: Did anyone see that girl in some school who turned her back and refused to do the pledge of allegiance?

I haven't read the article about the girl. But, I think that telling someone to leave the country if they don't like something doesn't have any value, because this country would not be what it is today if people did not speak up when they did not think something was fair and just. Our entire history, laws, democratic government, and rights for various groups of people are built on the very fact that they WERE able to say they didn't like something and demand that change be implemented.

For those that feel that a person should leave the country, I don't think you realize how many of the rights and freedom you have today is because people complained. Just like dkga1026 said, you wouldn't be able to vote if the women who were around during the suffrage movement did not fight for the right to vote. That's just one example.

Just like others have said we should be so grateful that we don't live in a country like Iraq where you are not allowed to say anything against your dictator leader unless you want to be executed.

I agree with Novemberbride. What that girl did was totally disrespectful and deserves a kick in the rear. There are plenty of ways to make your point without making a public spectacle of yourself and pi$$ing off a lot of people, including members of the armed forces who are fighting for what we believe in.
And, the pledge of allegiance thing - if ya don't like it, don't say it! Jeez, what are they gonna do next, boycott Halloween? Did you know that Halloween stems from the Catholic church? What about St. Patrick's Day? Are we going to boycott that too? It has to stop somewhere.......

Re: Did anyone see that girl in some school who turned her back and refused to do the pledge of allegiance?

That is MY POINT! I don't think THIS GIRL realizes how much different her life would be if she lived somewhere else. I think people should be PROUD to live in a country where you have all the freedoms that you have here.
She doesn't seem to have any valid reason for turning her back on the flag because she didn't voice any. Maybe if she lived in another country, she would realize what a fool she was and appreciate what she has in this country!

Thank you Anniegrl! Exactly!
I think people get a little too carried away with things these days.

Re: Did anyone see that girl in some school who turned her back and refused to do the pledge of allegiance?

I understand both viewpoints. My only problem with not saying the pledge (which I say every morning proudly - I work in an elementary school), is that is shows loyalty to our COUNTRY not to the GOVERNMENT. Therefore, I don't feel it is right to refuse saying it. Even though it does have the word 'G-d' in it, and not all people believe, you can just leave that line out, and still show a loyalty to America. I believe anyone who lives here can and should disagree with some things, nothing is perfect, BUT whether you agree or disagree with anything, you should still be loyal, because it is BECAUSE you live here that you have right to disagree to begin with. If you are not a fan of the country altogether, sooooo much so that you are refusing to pledge your loyalty to the Constitutional rights that you are given as an American citizen, then IMO you should not be given the right at all that you have absolutely no appreciation for. I hope this made sense and doesn't offend....

Re: Did anyone see that girl in some school who turned her back and refused to do the pledge of allegiance?

November...I am very proud of this country...and the freedoms it allows me...i.e. freedom of symbolic speech

didn't someone say that the girl was turning her back to the flag b/c she feels that the gov't has repressed her family? I don't know this for a fact...and am just going on hearsay...but that is a reason...

annie...I am hoping that using the phrase 'needs akick in the rear' was not really meant.

and the best way to make your point is to make a public spectacle out of yourself...

I better go read the article since you guys are talking specifically about this girl.

marnles, I agree with you!
yabbobay, I saw the girl on the news. I didn't read the article. They asked her the reason and she wouldn't speak. I never heard any reason why she would turn her back on the flag.
To me,that says that she doesn't have any valid reason. I wish I could see what becomes of this girl in the future. The same person would probably have no problem getting state aid.
People that live in this country that are so unhappy
have no idea what its like in other countries and take things for granted here. People come here from all over to start a new life.I think there must be something to it.

Perhaps the girl did not want to name her reasons because she understood that doing so at a basketball game is not the right place. So she turned away from the flag, but didn't try to make a big issue out of it. And whether or not she understand or doesn't understand how living in other countries is, afterall, she is still in school, in the process of learning her history and that of the world and she has every right to make her own conclusions from the history lessons.

Yabbobay, I meant it. I felt the same way about Sinead O'Connor ripping up the picture of the Pope on Saturday Night Live. Sure both women made their point, but there are better ways of making your point without being disrespectful. JMO
