my FIL's got an IOU at their wedding-- they are still waiting and it will be 34 years this month!
Well, I guess I'll contribute my story- We were stiffed by the Best Man. It didn't really surprise me, but DH was really offended by it - especially that he didn't even give us a card. They have been friends since they were little kids, used to be roomates. He was upset because he did a lot for him - bought him an expensive gift for being part of the wedding, paying for a hotel room the night before the wedding and then we didn't even get a card from him. He has only spoken to him once since the wedding. I told him that yes, he can be disappointed, but no, it is not a reason to stop being friends with him.

Re: Did anyone stiff you at your wedding?
imo, when you are planning a wedding you don't think about it. BUT, i think that changes after the wedding and you realize who didn't give you anything.
there are people I know are not going to give me squat, do i care? meh, i'll get over it.
i think once the shoe is on the other foot, you feel differently

Re: Did anyone stiff you at your wedding?
I don't think you should feel stiffed.
They probably couldn't afford much so they decided to give nothing. Honestly I wouldn't want to give a card with nothing in it if I had nothing to give.
If they are not in financial stress, that is a whole other story!

Re: Did anyone stiff you at your wedding?
i heard stories from my sister. it was like the people who knew better and are financially stable were cheap and the people who she wasn't expecting much from b/c they had traveled or were having financial issues gave her more than the 'cover your plate' guideline.
I'm not looking for gifts. Whoever wants to give will give. To me, the most important thing is that they are there. I understand why brides would be pissed after all we go through planning. But, life is way to short for that.

yeah we had some cheap o's. Someone had the nerve to tell us that if we don't invite their son then their not coming. So that made 3, then that person invited someone else that made 4 and we didn't even get a card. We also got a bounced check. Oh well, what can you do?

8 no shows - i'm pissed at that. 2 were supposed to be 'guests' that we had been asked if they could come - so to then blow it off at our expense is RUDE and classless.

Re: Did anyone stiff you at your wedding?
OMG that is insane...
My Aunts and Uncles gave me $100.00 each for my engagement and they always do $500.00 for the weddings (family tradition)...
If it was my mom's sister my mom would have fliped out on her... Hello don't you know you are suppossed to cover the plate...

I don't expect people to 'cover' anything. I understand its an invitation etc... but these same people know us and our financial situation too. You shouldn't ask to bring another person and then have us take a loss for it. Its selfish.

I totally agree...it's not because I am paying for my own wedding but I would never go to a party without giving a gift...You are eating and drinking at the party and you know it cost something..It's just the right thing to do. Maybe because I have always paid for everything myself I value the dollar and understand that people do pay money, big money to put parties together and I feel it's only right to give a gift...I am a generous giver not because I need to necessarily get the best gift for a person but I get excited to give gifts to people and want to get something the person will be excited for... I usually spend more then what I plan to spend...because I treat people that way I wouldn't understand how someone could go to a wedding and not give a gift... It 's just plan out rude ...I Understand that people can't cover there plate and all won't...but not to give a gift is a little tacky in my own opinion...Don't get me wrong I am not having a wedding to make money and I don't plan on making money (I actually think I will lose money) I want this wedding because I want to share the joy and happiness of our love with all the people I care about!!! I do know people that don't have much money and if they give a gift that pay a third of their plate fine they can't afford it...I also think if you give a bride a hard time about inviting your child...at Least pay for the child they didn't want at there wedding!!!
I paid for my own Sweet 16 and didn't make back the money I wasn't upset at all...I Had a great time but I was annoyed that some friends came without giving a gift!! Come on you couldn't even give me $25 now maybe if I didn't pay for that Sweet 16 I wouldn't have cared if a friend gave me no gift...but at 16 that was alot of money to be shelling out! Maybe that's why some of you brides feel the way you do about not having to give a gift... You mean to tell me that if you gave your Best Friend $300 for a wedding gift and a year later she comes to your wedding with no gift but you know she just bought a new tv you wouldn't be upset??????

Re: Did anyone stiff you at your wedding?
i know - we paid for our wedding ourselves too. Not showing is inexcusable unless there's a valid reason. We work hard - it just makes me sick that our money went to total waste.

Re: Did anyone stiff you at your wedding?
To Bklyngrl - I am so sorry that happened to you and your hubby, and I can tell you were hurt by people's rudeness and thoughtlessness and general lack of consideration. I know I will be upset too if this happens at my daughter's wedding.
Try to look past the people who didn't think enough of themselves to honor their rsvp or to honor you with even a token gift. They lost out on a wonderful time! Try to think of the cost of your wedding as a total, rather than a pp cost. Just as you wouldn't take the cost of the band or photog. and break it down into a pp amount, try try try to think of the RH cost that way. That is what it cost to have the most joyous wonderful celebration of your lifetime. Period.
There's nothing you could have done to prevent it, nothing you can do now. I do think I would call or ask parents to call to find out what happened. It really stinks that people can be so inconsiderate on someone else's dime!!
