Did you hear about the hostage situation in Ozone Park
This is the article from this morning. I just heard its still going on. it is almost 24 hours and the hostage situation is still going on, local residents have been evacuated, and authorities cut off power and water hoping to lure the guy out.
Police in Queens are continuing to negotiate Friday with a 46-year-old man who authorities say is holding his estranged wife hostage at gunpoint.
Investigators believe the incident started around 12:30 a.m. with a dispute between the two. Police said they were in front of the woman's daughter's apartment at 102-05 Van Wyck Expressway when the couple carried their fight inside. The daughter then called her boyfriend.
Police were called to the scene after receiving a 911 call for shots fired. They said the man's two daughters and the boyfriend of one of the girls were inside the apartment when the hostage situation began, but have since been released.
The estranged wife was still in the apartment as of about 9:00 p.m., and hostage negotiators were still trying to resolve the situation.
A family friend, Roy Ramsaran, has his own theory on what's happening.
“I think its domestic violence with his wife,” Ramsaran said. “He spent four years in jail. I think that's what he's going to do, It's happened before with other people but he spent time in jail. His wife put him in jail and he come out and get the wife.”
Several blocks in the surrounding area have been closed while the Van Wyck service road between Liberty and Atlantic avenues has also been closed.
The man is a native of Guyana who was just released from prison in March.
