He asked both my parents! He did it when we were supposed to be meeting up for a party, and he went over and saw my parents before seeing me. I love that he asked them, because I would never have wanted my mom to be surprised!

Yes, and I love the story.
FH called my parents to ask them if he could take the train to LI and take them to dinner when I was out of town for work. He obviously asked them not to say anything about it to me. I called my parents some point later in the day and the first thing my dad says is, 'Oh, I just spoke to R!' I said, What? Why? Then I heard my mom in the background yelling at him to shush. My dad tried to cover his tracks saying that he wasn't thinking straight and was confused. I dropped the conversation, but told FH later in the day that I was worried about my dad because he was saying strange things. Here I was thinking my father was loosing his marbles and needed to see a neurologist.
Apparently at the dinner, my father told R that even though he appreciated him asking for his permission, he had a big mouth and shouldn't be told any secrets. FH decided NOT to tell my parents when he was actually proposing in hopes they wouldn't ruin the surprise. Everyone else in our life knew when he was proposing except for my parents! It was a good thing
